Gulf energy majors amass huge portfolio of international LNG projects
Abu Dhabi and Saudi Arabia have built up an LNG presence by signing for these projects, while the region’s world-scale LNG exporter, Qatar, is also active.
Their combined production capacity is equivalent to around 400bcm of gas, which is equivalent to three times the 133bcm that the Gulf’s main producers – Qatar, Oman and the UAE – collectively exported last year.
Gulf countries’ efforts to exploit their natural gas resources by shipping it around the world in the form of LNG has taken a knock from the Iran war.
The most dramatic setback has been suffered by Qatar, where two trains at Ras Laffan were hit by Iranian strikes in March (GSN 1,210). It may take up to five years to bring that capacity back online and Qatar could suffer a $20bn hit to annual revenues in that time (although such calculations are an inexact science).
