Salta, Argentina, has just recorded its hottest night on record during the climatologically coldest time of the year. The minimum overnight temperature did not fall below 26°C (78.8°F), pulverizing the previous monthly record by 7°C.

This extraordinary event was caused by a strong Zonda-like foehn wind. The Zonda is a hot, dry downslope wind that develops on the eastern side of the Andes in western Argentina. Look at how the relative humidity remained below 5% for hours in the table below.

La violente tempête qui balaye le Chili a fait au moins dix morts et isolé près de 100 000 personnes en raison de l’interruption des voies de communication, selon un nouveau bilan publié lundi 20 juillet 2026 par le gouvernement, qui a décrété l’état de catastrophe et mobilisé l’armée pour les opérations de sauvetage.
