ort McMurray will become a virtual reality for viewers across the globe.
A new documentary invites audiences to immerse themselves in the social and economic challenges of the city, and decide its fate.
After two years of research, and 60 days of filming the creator of Fort McMoney is launching the online documentary game.
“The more you watch, the more you get your input into the game, and you can change the city just like in SimCity,” says creator David Dufrense. “You can make decisions about shadow populations or homeless people or everything. It’s a game, it’s not reality, but it’s a way to get people interested.”
Dufresne is already defending the film’s title against backlash from community leaders who argue that it cheapens Fort McMurray’s image. He says its an appropriate moniker for a community where many community events are funded in part by big oil.
“It’s a realistic name,” says Dufrense. “I know that people from Fort McMurray love their city and their lifestyle and you’ll see that there will be a lot of sequences [that are] very happy like Santa Claus parade and everything. But for example, take the Santa Clause Parade, this is a happy moment, but who paid? Total, Nexen, so it’s, it’s money.”
Dufrense is launching the project at the International Documentary Film Festival in Amsterdam, following several prelaunch event.
