According to a report by the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), at least 70 journalists were killed on the job around the world in 2013 with “two-thirds of journalist killings during the year took place in the Middle East.” The report noted that Syria claimed the lives of at least 29 journalists in 2013, bringing the total number of journalists killed covering the conflict to 63, including some who died over the border in Lebanon or Turkey. Iraq follows with 10 slain, nine of them murdered, and all during the final quarter of the year. read more
