Asylum seeker policy swaps deaths at sea for annihilation on land
With every passing day, news from the asylum seeker front line gets darker.
Nauru guards are accused of assaulting children, according to reports from charity Save the Children.
The United Nations says Nauru, and by implication Australia, is in breach of international obligations as a result of the tiny country’s failure to investigate torture and human rights abuses at the detention centre.
The UN has also criticised the government’s policy of returning refugees in Australian waters to Indonesia, saying this is a breach of the refugee convention.
A few days ago, an unexploded wartime bomb was found at the Nauru processing centre.
Syrians held on Manus Island have been offered repatriation despite the prospect of facing death in their home country.
