Europe’s biggest gas-consuming nations are headed for their mildest year on record, preserving fuel inventories needed as a bulwark against disruptions in Russian supplies via Ukraine.
Parts of England will probably have the warmest year since records began in 1659, according to Met Office data. Germany is also poised for its mildest year ever, says MeteoGroup, a forecaster. Gas inventories at the U.K.’s biggest storage site climbed to a record Oct. 26, while stockpiles at German facilities are the largest since at least 2009.

“The weather seems to be Putin’s worst enemy,” Marina Petroleka, the London-based head of energy and infrastructure research at Business Monitor International, a Fitch Group company, wrote in an e-mail Nov. 28. “If this mild weather continues through December, there will not be any cause for concern about shortages in early 2015.”
