“You know what I did? I left troops to take the oil. I took the oil. The only troops I have are taking the oil, they’re protecting the oil. I took over the oil.”

Groups supporting a popular campaign to end state-sponsored discrimination against women in Lebanon have called for a sit-in at the interior ministry on Thursday.

The protest is in opposition to the Lebanese Cabinet’s recent endorsement of a draft law that continues to exclude Lebanese women from passing on their citizenship to immigrant children.

Instead, the law would only permit the immigrant offspring of Lebanese fathers and grandfathers to petition for citizenship, but not extend the same right to mothers and grandmothers.

“I think this is the most blatant discrimination since it says that only male blood counts. It means that the state only considers men to be citizens,” said Lina Abou Habib, executive director of Collective for Research & Training on Development-Action (CRTD-A).
