Indigenous farmer-saved seeds, which farmers have been improving and adapting to local conditions over many years, currently constitute about 70% of seeds used in Mozambique. About 20% of seed are from informal exchange; only 10% of seed in Mozambique comes from the commercial sector (private and public). But the government of Mozambique has adopted the Green Revolution approach to agricultural development, aiming to modernise Mozambique’s agricultural sector, while providing much-needed support to small-scale farmers in order to ensure food security and sustainable agricultural growth. This ‘modernisation’ involves government supporting seed commercialisation and privatisation, and introducing agrochemicals for industrial agriculture.
