Migrant drownings rise by a third this year on Mediterranean, U.N. says

More than 2,500 migrants have drowned in the Mediterranean while attempting to cross into Europe so far this year, the U.N. Refugee Agency says, with at least 880 drowning in the past week alone.

Flow unchanged, but more people are dying. Why?

Another figure is alarming. The death rate across the Central Mediterranean has changed, and for the worst. According to IOM, 2061 people are dead or missing at 31st May 2016. This is 16 per cent more than last year when the death toll was 1782. This means that the death rate across the route is now 4.3%, or 1 person dies for every 23 arrivals. Last May the death rate was 3.7%.

“Dangerous Journeys” : International Migration Increasingly Unsafe in 2016 : IOM

As the number of migrant deaths worldwide continues to rise significantly, IOM’s Missing Migrants Project has recorded 23 per cent more migrant deaths during the first half of 2016 compared with the same period in 2015.
“In the first six months of 2016, worldwide more than 3,700 people went missing or lost their lives,” said GMDAC Director Frank Laczko. “This is a 23 percent increase compared to the same time period in 2015, and a 52 percent increase for the same time period in 2014.”

Tragédies des migrants En 2016, la traversée de la Méditerranée est devenue de plus en plus dangereuse pour les migrants. Derrière les chiffres officiels se cachent probablement beaucoup plus de victimes.

Cette année, le rythme des noyades n’a fait qu’augmenter, l’année 2016 devenant l’année la plus meurtrière jamais enregistrée pour les personnes ayant tenté la traversée de la Méditerranée.

Aumentate anche le partenze dall’Egitto: nel 2015 gli arrivi erano stati 200, saliti a 2mila da gennaio a oggi

One Year After Alan Kurdi’s Drowning, Mediterranean Death Tolls Rise

One year ago today, a three-year-old boy named Alan Kurdi drowned in the Aegean Sea. Having fled the war in Syria with his family, Alan died on the final stretch of the arduous journey to safety in Europe when the overcrowded rubber dinghy he was in capsized after leaving Turkey. His mother and five-year-old brother also died that day. The picture of Alan’s tiny, lifeless body washed up on Turkish shores provoked horror, empathy, and outrage around the world.

600 children have died in the Mediterranean this year

“The Mediterranean sea has become an unmarked grave for children fleeing war, persecution and extreme poverty. Just this year, we estimate that at least 600 children have died crossing the sea –a rate of two a day. The international community cannot continue to ignore these tragedies - we have an obligation to protect children, be it here in Europe or during their treacherous journeys.”
