Child’s play had been considered largely inconsequential, but Piaget saw that it was an essential part of a child’s cognitive development. Children were “learning by doing”. Today’s educational toy industry started from there.
Papert understood that mathematics was abstract and theoretical, and that was how it was taught to children. That was why most of them did not understand it. The answer, he thought, was to give children a physical way to think of mathematical ideas.
