While the rest of the World looks on aghast at recent events at Standing Rock (what century are we in again?) there some aspects of what have been happening there that are particularly concerning in my line of work (Geographic Information Systems).
Ko Maunga Haumi te Maunga
Ko Mangatu te Awa
Ko te Aitanga a Mahaki te Iwi
From the perspective of someone that has worked with Maori tribal groups on mapping projects there are some important things for those groups (and other indigenous peoples) to consider. Some of these considerations are not well communicated:
Implications of recording sites of indigenous interest in computer systems.
Implications of using ’The Cloud’ for the security of important, often sacred, knowledge.
Implications of anti-terror legislation and inter-government agreements and the possibility of mis-use of these tools against indigenous peoples.
