Poland to follow Slovenia in closing borders for refugees

The President of Slovenia has signed into law legislative amendments to the Slovenian Aliens Act, entrusting the Parliament with the power to “close the borders” due to a serious threat to public order and security caused by migrations. In Poland draft amendments to the Polish law on the protection for foreigners resembling the Slovenian initiative have been introduced by Interior Minister Mariusz Błaszczak.

Poland: Draft amendment to the law on protection of foreigners – another step to seal Europe’s border, OP-ed by Polish Helsinki Committee

In January Polish Minister of Interior Mariusz Błaszczak presented draft amendment to the law on protection of foreigners on the territory of Poland. He claimed that there is a need to response to the growing migration flow in Poland and to ensure public security. However, he failed to explain what kind of danger to public security asylum seekers create amid lacking evidence that the number of crimes perpetrated by foreigners in Poland has increased. Moreover, official statistics show that, for the past years the number of asylum applications lodged in Poland has not exceed 15 000 yearly and neither has it increased recently. Taking this into consideration, it seems that the draft amendment reflects the national and regional trend of portraying foreigners as security threat and closing borders to persons seeking protection rather than the actual response to some changed situation.

Poland trapping asylum seekers in unsafe Belarus

Looking through the windows at Terespol train station on Poland’s border with Belarus, I see a familiar sight. About 60 asylum seekers are waiting to be back on a return train ride to Brest, Belarus, 20 minutes away. Most appear to be family groups, many with small children, and I later learned, are from the northern Caucasus, largely from Chechnya and Tajikistan. Human rights organisations: Poland violates international law by blocking entry of asylum seekers from Belarus

Despite rulings by the European Court of Human Rights in cases involving the push backs of Chechen nationals from Poland to Belarus, Polish border guards continue to block the entry of asylum seekers. In a joint statement Amnesty International, the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights and Human Rights Watch call the practice a breach of human rights law, refugee law and European Union law and urge the European Commission to act.
