Israeli army prosecution files appeal for harsher sentence for Elor Azarya

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — Days after the defense team for Elor Azarya appealed his manslaughter conviction for the fatal shooting of a wounded Palestinian, the Israeli general prosecution submitted their own appeal on Tuesday, demanding a harsher sentence for the Israeli soldier who was sentenced to just 18 months in prison for the killing.
Azarya was filmed committing the execution-style shooting of 21-year-old Abd al-Fattah al-Sharif in the southern occupied West Bank city of Hebron last year.
Israeli media reported that the prosecution petitioned the Israeli Military Appeals court to increase the sentence to between 30 and 60 months (2.5 to 5 years) in prison, from the 18-month sentence (1.5 years) handed down last month, amid widespread outrage over its leniency.

Les procureurs de l’armée israélienne ont fait appel mardi de la condamnation à 18 mois de prison du soldat Elor Azaria, jugé coupable d’homicide en janvier dernier pour avoir abattu un terroriste palestinien déjà neutralisé en mars 2016.
Selon les procureurs, la peine « s’éloigne considérablement » de ce qui était attendu de la cour, étant donné la gravité du crime.
Les procureurs ont demandé à la cour d’appel d’au moins doubler la peine d’Azaria, et une peine de prison de trois à cinq ans, déjà requise pendant le procès.
La semaine dernière, l’avocat d’Azaria a lui aussi fait appel, non seulement contre la peine, qu’il juge trop dure, mais aussi contre la condamnation du soldat.
