IOM Learns of ’Slave Market’ Conditions Endangering Migrants in North Africa

Libya - Over the past weekend, IOM staff in Niger and Libya documented shocking events on North African migrant routes, which they have described as ’slave markets’ tormenting hundreds of young African men bound for Libya.

L’OIM dénonce les « marchés d’esclaves » en Libye

L’Organisation internationale pour les migrations (OIM) a dénoncé mardi l’existence de véritables « marchés d’esclaves » en Libye, où les migrants sont vendus entre 200 et 500 dollars.

De plus en plus de migrants ouest-africains sont vendus comme esclaves en Libye, selon l’Organisation internationale pour les migrations. Des migrants ont confié à l’OIM avoir été achetés et revendus, notamment, à Sabha, ville du sud de la Libye où passent de nombreux candidats à l’exil. Le phénomène serait si important que l’OIM n’hésite pas à parler de « marché aux esclaves ». Michel Arseneault a joint le porte-parole de l’OIM à Genève.
