#Australie. Île de Manus : plus de 60 millions d’euros versés à des migrants maltraités

Le gouvernement australien a accepté de dédommager des réfugiés retenus dans le centre de rétention de Manus au titre de sa politique migratoire restrictive. Une manière d’éviter un procès gênant durant lequel les exactions commises auraient été exposées.

Manus payout : Government has avoided having its dirty secrets exposed
The Australian government this week agreed to what could be the largest human rights payout in the country’s legal history. A class action in the Supreme Court of Victoria on behalf of 1905 asylum seekers and refugees held at the Manus Island detention centre from November 2012 to December 2014 was resolved, on the eve of the hearing, for a reported $70 million.

UNHCR warns of escalating crisis on Manus Island
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is gravely concerned by deteriorating conditions at the Manus Island ‘Regional Processing Centre’, as authorities seek to relocate people to Lorengau or elsewhere in Papua New Guinea. The announcement of the closure of the Centre, in the absence of appropriate alternatives, is causing acute distress among refugees and asylum-seekers. UNHCR is deeply saddened by the tragic death of a young refugee yesterday, which also highlights the precarious situation for vulnerable people on Manus Island.
