    Many critics of NFTs often overlook the importance of finding new sources of income for minorities and people in the pandemic-hit global South, as it’s easy to dismiss NFTs as an extraneous pastime for the already crypto-rich, or for well-paid developers and designers opportunistically jumping on the trend.

    NFTs may liberate artists not only technically, but conceptually – as the certificate becomes widely accepted as the transferable commodity, the associated artwork is free to be an idea, an essay or manifesto, a happening or performance, a keepsake or a gift to others. (...)

    Although it is easy to be excited about new creative possibilities, an inclusive community, and the income from NFTs that many artists are making, we cannot ignore the climate crisis. As my peers have pointed out, my recent involvement in climate activism, tree planting, and agroecology seems at odds with any engagement with cryptocurrencies, so I want to be clear about my stance on this issue.
