• Hungary to Make Border Fence With Serbia Higher

Hungarian authorities have announced that the country has decided to increase the height of its border fence along the border with Serbia as well as strengthen it.

In a statement released today, October 31, the Hungarian government said that the move had been taken so that Europe does not have to restore internal border controls, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

“Hungary is increasing the height of its border fence so that Europe does not have to bring back internal border controls. If Hungary did not protect its border, numerous European countries would have to reinstate checks on their borders, which would not only be an inconvenience when travelling but would also hurt the European economy,” State Secretary Bence Rétváripointed out in this regard.

According to him, even though the fence on the Hungarian-Serbian border protects the security of the EU and Europeans, the EU has not reimbursed even two per cent of the 600 billion forints or €1.5 billion it cost to build it.

He also added that Hungary was a net contributor to the EU, as it met all its payment obligations, while the EU “is using various procedures to block the funds due to Hungary”.

On October 17, the EU expressed its concern over the significant increase in the number of illegal border crossings from Serbia to the bloc.

In a meeting held in Luxembourg together with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the EU Member States, it was discussed about the inappropriate visa policy of Serbia, which allows the illegal entry of immigrants into the territory of the EU, as well as the measures possible to address this issue.

According to data from the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex), the Western Balkan route remains the most active migration route in the EU.

Frontex has revealed that around 19,160 detections were made on this route alone in September.

As the Hungarian-Serbian border is already facing an increased flow of illegal migration, the Slovak authorities have sent a total of 40 police officers to Hungary to support border protection.

In this regard, the Slovak Interior Ministry said that police officers were sent to the Dávod region of Hungary based on an agreement with the Hungarian police leadership.

At the same time, the Ministry has emphasized that the policemen will perform their duty in joint patrols with the Hungarian policemen on the border with Serbia.

In addition, Slovak police officers will also join their counterparts from the Czech Republic and Austria to help Hungary secure the EU’s external border.

Moreover, the Slovak Republic has explained that it is not a proper solution to the problem of illegal migration if controls are placed at the internal borders of the Schengen area.
