I know the exact moment in the interview I lost the job for a boutique app firm in downtown Austin. They wanted to see some of my code, and, of course, they understood I couldn’t show them anything from my current or past companies. But that shouldn’t be an issue, certainly I can demonstrate any one of my numerous side projects that I no-doubt have in progress.
But I have no side projects. I have no presence on github. I have no open-source projects with which I whittle away my evenings. I have exactly zero pull requests for any of the latest sexy codebases all the cool coders are in on. I don’t mess around with exercises in Haskel. And I loathe hackathons.
And when I said I have no side projects to show, what they heard - what interviewers hear - is: I am not the best. I am not a passionate developer. I don’t spend the necessary time to keep on top of my education and skills. That development is “just a job.”
And to some degree this is true. I am not the best. I have met some of the best, and we are fundamentally different creatures. If I may make an analogy, back in my distance running days I could consistently get in the top 5-10% of finishers, but the differences between me and the elites was the difference between me and the bottom 1%. I was a passionate runner. I ran 50+ miles a week. I pushed myself to excel. To excel within the boundaries of the time and life-balance I had set for myself. To achieve elite status would take a life sacrifice that I wasn’t willing to make. It would mean running at the expense of all other experiences.
There is a small group of people for whom code speaks. They discovered more than a job, they discovered a calling. Code is a craft and they are artists. For every one of those folks there are thousands of amazing, solid developers that will write circles around 90% of the other CS graduates. But they aren’t “the best.”
When companies say they want “passionate developers” that are coding in their free time, when companies say they want “the best,” I get nervous. It’s a myopic approach to team building. It’s a subtle way of requesting human machines.
I’ve made it a point to add to my resume and online profiles the other things about which I am passionate. The silly art project that I launched in Austin. My dog business. Running, painting, writing. It’s important to me that these attributes be valued by my workplace. If they value it in me, then they value it in others, and that speaks volumes about the company culture.
The world is catching up to this reality, bit by bit. The Bay Area, Seattle, NYC - these may be the hottest, hippest areas to have your startup or giant conglomerate, but you severely limit your pool of potential candidates to a tiny puddle of people that can live in these cities. I have four children. I own an entire separate dog playcare business with my wife. I am an active member of the local art community. There is no way I could ever live in one of these other cities. And while some companies are realizing that I am not an edge case - Facebook, Google, Amazon, they all have a significant presence in Austin specifically because they’ve drained the talent elsewhere - too many places are still convinced that “the best” lives to code. That “the best” is attracted to your company because you have a nap room, work 80 hour weeks and have a ping pong table. That “the best” is happy to drink into the Earth every Friday and has absolutely no evening or weekend plans. Ever.
I did not get the job at the boutique app firm in downtown Austin. I have no code side projects to show you. On Thursday evenings I go to a life drawing studio and spend three hours with other artists sketching a variety of poses from our model. Most evenings after I’ve made dinner and spent time with the wife and kids, I sit down and knock out 2,000 words on my fifth novel (and like the four abominations that preceded, it will sit in my Pile of Shame, never to be seen by another human being.) Weekends I hike. I dive deep into art. I am a passionate developer because I am a passionate person. But I have no code here to show you.
Resilient Web Design—Introduction
►https://resilientwebdesign.com
With a title like Resilient Web Design, you might think that this is a handbook for designing robust websites. This is not a handbook. It’s more like a history #book.
(…)
But in the world of #web_design, we are mostly preoccupied with the here and now. When we think beyond our present moment, it is usually to contemplate the future—to imagine the devices, features, and interfaces that don’t yet exist. We don’t have time to look back upon our past, and yet the history of web design is filled with interesting ideas.
For instance, what should the Line Mode Browser do when it encounters an HTML element it doesn’t understand, such as NEXTID? The answer can be found in the sparse documentation that Tim Berners‐Lee wrote for his initial collection called HTML Tags. Under the heading “Next ID” he wrote:
Browser software may ignore this tag.
Web designers would do well to remember what the advertising industry chose to ignore: on the web, the user has the final say.
Platforms are controlled and predictable. The World Wide Web is chaotic and unpredictable.
The web is a hot mess.
The trick is identifying what it is considered core functionality and what is considered an enhancement.
1. Identify core functionality.
2. Make that functionality available using the simplest possible technology.
3. Enhance!

Invisible Images (Your Pictures Are Looking at You)
Super article, très important. À lire.
When you put an image on Facebook or other social media, you’re feeding an array of immensely powerful artificial intelligence systems information about how to identify people and how to recognize places and objects, habits and preferences, race, class, and gender identifications, economic statuses, and much more.
Neural networks cannot invent their own classes; they’re only able to relate images they ingest to images that they’ve been trained on. And their training sets reveal the historical, geographical, racial, and socio-economic positions of their trainers.
Ideology’s ultimate trick has always been to present itself as objective truth, to present historical conditions as eternal, and to present political formations as natural. Because image operations function on an invisible plane and are not dependent on a human seeing-subject (and are therefore not as obviously ideological as giant paintings of Napoleon) they are harder to recognize for what they are: immensely powerful levers of social regulation that serve specific race and class interests while presenting themselves as objective
as capital searches out new domains of everyday life to bring into its sphere, the ability to use automated imaging and sensing to extract wealth from smaller and smaller slices of everyday life is irresistible. It’s easy to imagine, for example, an AI algorithm on Facebook noticing an underage woman drinking beer in a photograph from a party. That information is sent to the woman’s auto insurance provider, who subscribes to a Facebook program designed to provide this kind of data to credit agencies, health insurers, advertisers, tax officials, and the police. Her auto insurance premium is adjusted accordingly. A second algorithm combs through her past looking for similar misbehavior that the parent company might profit from.
Machine-machine systems are extraordinary intimate instruments of power that operate through an aesthetics and ideology of objectivity, but the categories they employ are designed to reify the forms of power that those systems are set up to serve. As such, the machine-machine landscape forms a kind of hyper-ideology that is especially pernicious precisely because it makes claims to objectivity and equality.
Opensource Accessibility (a11y) / Search Engine Optimization (SEO) validator : Tanaguru
▻http://www.tanaguru.com/fr
@tanaguru C’est génial, merci à vous !

How a mysterious ghost ship brought cosmic disco to Cape Verde | Music | The Guardian
▻https://www.theguardian.com/music/2016/may/24/space-echo-mystery-behind-cosmic-sound-cabo-verde
In a calm morning in March 1968, a shipment carrying the latest Korgs, Moogs and Hammond organs set off from Baltimore harbour, heading for an exhibition in Rio de Janeiro. The sea was steady, the containers safely attached. And yet later that same day, the ship would inexplicably vanish.
A few months later, it finally reappeared. Somehow, the ship had been marooned on the São Nicolau island of Cabo Verde (now Cape Verde, but then a Portuguese territory 350 miles off the west coast of Africa). The crew were nowhere to be seen and the cargo was commandeered by local police. But when it was found to contain hundreds upon hundreds of keyboards and synths, an anti-colonial leader called Amílcar Cabral declared the instruments should be distributed equally among the archipelago’s schools.
Overnight, a whole generation of young Cabo Verdeans gained free access to cutting-edge music gear. According to Frankfurt-based rarities label Analog Africa, this bizarre turn of fate can be directly credited with inspiring the island’s explosion of newly electrified sounds following independence in 1975, and has now been documented on its on its latest compilation, Space Echo – The Mystery Behind The Cosmic Sound Of Cabo Verde.

The Skylab 4 mutiny, 1973
▻http://libcom.org/history/1973-skylab-4-mutiny
Commander Carr tried to reason with mission control, stating that “on the ground, I don’t think we would be expected to work a 16-hour day for 85 days, and so I really don’t see why we should even try to do it up here.”
Six weeks into the mission, this culminated in the crew announcing an unscheduled day off, mutinying by turning off the communications radio while getting some rest.
They reportedly spent their day off relaxing and taking in the panoramic views of Earth from orbit.
Carr then communicated the group’s demands: "We need more time to rest. We need a schedule that is not so packed. We don’t want to exercise after a meal. We need to get things under control.’
Eventually, mission control agreed to compromise. Their workload was reduced, schedules altered and the crew given more control over planning.
Pogue recounted that the last six weeks after this were much more enjoyable, allowing them free time for “studying the Sun, the Earth below, and ourselves.”
Initially ground crews attributed the astronauts’ complaining to possible lethargy or depression. But the New York Times reported that Pogue said this was incorrect:
He and the others just wanted more time to look out the window and think. The flight had made him “much more inclined toward humanistic feeling toward other people, other crewmen,” he told Science News in 1985. “I try to put myself into the human situation, instead of trying to operate like a machine.”
After they returned, NASA became vindictive, and ensured that none of the crew flew again.

How Technology Hijacks People’s Minds — from a Magician and Google’s Design Ethicist — Tristan Harris

living moment to moment with the fear of missing something isn’t how we’re built to live.
And it’s amazing how quickly, once we let go of that fear, we wake up from the illusion. When we unplug for more than a day, unsubscribe from those notifications, or go to Camp Grounded — the concerns we thought we’d have don’t actually happen.
We don’t miss what we don’t see.
The thought, “what if I miss something important?” is generated in advance of unplugging, unsubscribing, or turning off — not after. Imagine if tech companies recognized that, and helped us proactively tune our relationships with friends and businesses in terms of what we define as “time well spent” for our lives, instead of in terms of what we might miss.

►https://comptoir.org/2014/10/08/le-congo-belge-de-leopold-ii-les-origines-du-massacre

The Case for Slow Programming
▻https://ventrellathing.wordpress.com/2013/06/18/the-case-for-slow-programming
My dad used to say, “Slow down, son. You’ll get the job done faster.”
Programming slowly was a problem for me when I recently worked on a project with some young coders who believe in making really fast, small iterative changes to the code. At the job, we were encouraged to work in the same codebase, as if it were a big cauldron of soup, and if we all just kept stirring it continuously and vigorously, a fully-formed thing of wonder would emerge.
It didn’t.
You can’t wish away Design Process. It has been in existence since the dawn of civilization. And the latest clever development tools, no matter how clever, cannot replace the best practices and real-life collaboration that built cathedrals, railroads, and feature-length films.
