The Assir movement may have run its course, but regardless of the outcome of the current showdown in Saida, it won’t go away. It is part of the acute sectarian tensions and conflicts in the region that Saudi Arabia and Qatar have unleashed, all at the behest of the US-Israeli alliance, in order to switch public hostilities from Israel to Iran and the Shia “crescent” – to use the term that Jordan’s king used in a speech that was written for him by one of his many American advisers.
Assir – as obnoxious and irritating (to many) as he is – won’t go away. Somebody else will take his place, and if he survives this showdown, he may easily re-emerge and in a time of civil war he can be quite useful for Qatar and Saudi Arabia in their war on Hezbollah.

Syrian rebels have killed at least 60 people, including civilians and people loyal to the government, in a battle in a Sunni-majority village in the country’s east, activists said.
[…]
A video posted online by rebels on Tuesday, entitled “The storming and cleansing of Hatla”, showed dozens of fighters carrying black flags celebrating and firing guns in the streets of a small town as smoke curled above several buildings.
“We have raised the banner ’There is no God but God’ above the houses of the apostate rejectionists, the Shias, and the holy warriors are celebrating,” the voice of the cameraman says.
One fighter shouts in the video: “This is a Sunni area, it does not belong to other groups.”
Most of the armed rebels in Syria are from the country’s Sunni majority, while President Bashar al-Assad has retained core support among the minorities, including his own Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shia Islam, along with Christians and Shia.

Despite being a victim of that violent assault in February, it was Jawad who was subjected to arrest today, not the perpetrators. During his detention, Jawad was also forced to submit a DNA sample against his will, and to sign conditions that he will not speak with Baruch Marzel for the next 30 days. Jawad stated he is happy to comply with this stipulation at least. Jawad was released at around 9pm.As well as today’s arrest, Jawad has faced other harassment recently, including not being allowed to walk on the street where his factory space and uncle’s house are located.

Some 1,500 packages of food aid donated by Hezbollah were burned by Palestinian refugees from Syria and local residents in the Bekaa Wednesday, the second such incident in a week. Omar Halabi, the head of the Saadnayel Youth League, told The Daily Star that a truck with boxes of aid was unloaded in the morning at the offices of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine.
Halabi said when the aid was distributed, the refugees noticed the labels attached to each package explaining that the aid was a gift from the “Islamic Resistance in Lebanon to our brethren, the displaced Palestinians from Syria.”
“When the refugees realized that the aid was from the same party which is killing their people in Qusair and in other places, they, with dozens of locals, took the boxes from the Palestinian Cultural Center and burned them,” Halabi said.

Last Thursday, Palestinian refugees from Syria set fire to humanitarian aid donated by Hezbollah in the Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp, citing their anger over the party’s role fighting alongside the Syrian regime.
Refugees gathered in front of the camp’s Kifah School holding banners explaining their decision to destroy the aid, which the party is distributing across a number of Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon.

The ACCP’s ideas represent the interests of particularly rapacious sections of the US ruling class, who operate on the principle that everything—even an object of priceless artistic or scientific value—is defined by its “market value”.
What they mean is price, since the real value of the objects stolen from the Museum of Baghdad and the Iraqi National Library is incalculable. These are quite literally people who understand the price of everything and the value of nothing.

Locals told Ma’an that five bulldozers dug up agricultural lands east of Beit Hanoun.
Saber al-Zaghain, a popular resistance coordinator, told Ma’an that Israel conducted dredging operations on farmland near Beit Hanoun, damaging Palestinian crops.
“These crops have been planted after the recent Israeli war on the Gaza Strip, and now is the season to harvest them in order to be distributed to the markets,” she said.
Al-Zaghain called on the international community to protect Gazan farmers during the harvest season.

Police said late Sunday an investigation is under way after Akkar MP Mouin Merhebi fired shots in a standoff with police near Tripoli, north Lebanon.
A statement from the Internal Security Forces said police set up two checkpoints Sunday afternoon as part of a crackdown on building violations in Badawi near Tripoli, Lebanon’s second-largest city.
When Merhebi arrived at one of the checkpoints on the main Beddawi road at 7:30 p.m., he demanded its removal, arguing that the roadblock was causing a traffic jam, the police statement said.
It said Merhebi ignored the police’s explanation regarding the nature of the checkpoint and grabbed a Kalashnikov out of his car and began firing shots into the air after unleashing insults.
Then, Merhebi approached a military vehicle at the checkpoint in an attempt to remove it, but the driver refused and a scuffle ensued, the police said.
