Stephen Colbert’s PAC Is More Than a Gag - NYTimes.com

“He is taking advantage of loopholes to set up an organization that is not a legitimate political action committee, if there is such a thing, to make the point that the current system is a form of legalized bribery. Try making that point as a member of the mainstream media and holding on to your objectivity.”

Rebel spokesman to Haaretz: #Libya needs world’s help, including Israel’s - Haaretz Daily Newspaper | Israel News
►http://www.haaretz.com/print-edition/news/rebel-spokesman-to-haaretz-libya-needs-world-s-help-including-israel-s-1.38
Libya needs any help it can get from the international community, including from Israel, a spokesman for the opposition to Muammar Gadhafi’s regime told Haaretz Tuesday by phone from London.....
When Shabani was asked whether a democratically elected government in Libya would recognize Israel, he responded: “That is a very sensitive question. The question is whether Israel will recognize us.”
Commentaire aujourd’hui de Angry Arab :
Haaretz lies and fabrications
►http://angryarab.blogspot.com/2011/08/haaretz-lies-and-fabrications.html
The internet was abuzz yesterday with “news” from Haaretz reported that a “spokesperson” for the Libyan opposition, Ali Shibani, expressed willingness to accept Israeli help, or silly words to that effect. The thing is that I looked for Shibani on the internet, in Arabic, English, or French and found nothing about him at all. Those lies and fabrications are common in Zionist propaganda: Israeli media would find an Arab, say a terrorist for the South Lebanon Army, and attribute Zionist statements to him and then hail it as "unprecedented love for Israel from a well-known Arab leader". The lies of Israel are too stupid these days. They focus on one Arab who whispers acceptance of peace with Israel--always in a language other than Arabic--and then hail that person as a leader of a mass movement. Don't feel sorry for Zionist propagandists: that they are now so desperate and so blatant and so deceptive and so dumb. What do you say about propaganda that is more dumb and more crude than Ba
thist propaganda?
A Professional Military and the Privatization of Warfare - Miller-McCune
►http://www.miller-mccune.com/culture/a-professional-military-and-the-privatization-of-warfare-30468
These career officers were concerned over the privatization of the military, a boom industry that was having an enormous impact on war fighting, especially on the ground.
So quickly have logistics and security companies swept onto the battlefield that the government and the armed services have lost control over them. These private contractors, so necessary for the professional military to sustain combat, have also made it easier for America’s leaders to pull the war trigger, the colonels say, and to do it without having to have their policies — or their heads — examined.
What most rankles the colonels is that contractors have only one obligation: to fulfill their contract. They answer to no chain of command; they are not subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice; they are not required to have U.S. military training; and they are not subject to the Law of Land Warfare or the Geneva Conventions. Contractors decide on their own rules of engagement. Those security contractors who work for “U.S. agencies” or the State Department, which will soon be taking over control of security in Iraq, are immunized from Iraqi laws, and potentially U.S. law as well. Put another way, they have license to kill.
The U.S. is finding it more complicated to leave Iraq than it was to invade it. The message coming from northern Iraq says that only U.S. troops can avoid a civil war. Two hundred miles to the south in Baghdad, an American presence threatens a renewed insurgency.
What does this dilemma for U.S. forces mean to the privatization of the military? The message seems clear. The private security companies make the process of diplomacy more difficult. Hired guns may provide security on the battlefield, but it still takes an army to keep the peace.

Security sources said that the bomb went off as the perpetrators – Ihsan Ali Dia and Hassan Nayef Nassar – may have been planting an explosives device under a white Nissan Murano registered to Judge Albert Serhal – license plate number 29592. Sources could not confirm the bomb had been planted under the vehicle when it went off.

Spanish childcare case provokes international campaign - Guardian.co.uk
►http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/jun/21/spanish-childcare-case-provokes-campaign
These criticisms have angered Spanish paediatricians and also prompted childcare activist Sheila Kitzinger and mothers’ groups in Britain, the US and elsewhere to throw their weight behind the campaign to have the baby, known as Alma, returned to her mother.
Social services sources said Habiba was suffering psychological problems, was aggressive, hurled objects at other young mothers, would go weeks without bathing her child, left the baby on its own in potentially dangerous situations and took her out without proper clothes on. She also had a violent relationship with the child’s father, who had been sent to jail for attacking her but whom she still wanted to live with. She had recently turned down a bed at a centre for victims of domestic violence.

This series of wayfinding signs is the perfect solution for the problem at hand: it is maintenance free, weather proof, low cost, can be produced by a local work force, and blends naturally and seamlessly with the environment. It is not stuffy or overdone, and fulfills its role with purpose and simplicity. Perhaps most impressive, this project will truly have a powerful and positive impact on the people who live in this area of North Syria.

Corporate Tax Dodgers: The Dirtiest Dozen » Rainforest Action Network Blog
►http://understory.ran.org/2011/04/14/corporate-tax-dodgers-the-dirtiest-dozen
We reviewed 12 of the dirtiest corporate tax dodgers: Bank of America, Citi, JPMorgan, Wells Fargo, Chevron, BP, Shell, Exxon, Massey Energy, Alpha Natural Resources, Peabody Energy and Arch Coal. These 12 banks, oil and coal companies are responsible for foreclosing on millions of people’s homes and polluting our air, water and climate. At the same time, we found that they pay next to nothing into a tax system that provides the very services that protect the homeless, the sick and our environment.

The page which began generating online buzz we discussed in a former post, for requesting an Arab march from neighboring countries in an attempt to #free-Palestine, was removed because it contained direct calls for violence according to Facebook.
While we at TNW ME reviewed the page after the controversy surrounding it we did not see any direct calls for violence by page administration. Facebook administration had something else to say on the matter.

US Army ’kill team’ in #Afghanistan posed with photos of murdered civilians, via @joujolie
►http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/mar/21/us-army-kill-team-afghanistan-posed-pictures-murdered-civilians
An investigation by Der Spiegel has unearthed approximately 4,000 photos and videos taken by the men.
The magazine, which is planning to publish only three images, said that in addition to the #crimes the men were on trial for there are “also entire collections of pictures of other victims that some of the defendants were keeping”.
US army tried to hide the pictures from the public and only apologised for the “distress” caused... Not for the barbaric actions:
In a statement, the army said it apologised for the distress caused by photographs “depicting actions repugnant to us as human beings and contrary to the standards and values of the United States”.

Although I’ve already heard years ago a version of Danny DeVito’s joke in the movie... And sometimes the scenario is quite predictable.
