My analysis is that we can’t anymore refer to rules of engagement based on depth and distance, rather targets, and this is going to be the determining factor for the direction of events. What’s Hezbollah’s objectives and what’re those of Israel?

Israel’s main objective is getting Hezbollah out of the border area, and destroy as much infrastructure as possible based on its bank of targets. It’s succeeding in turning the border area into a burned area, but Hezb is still present at the front edge. Also, Israel is provoking Hezb to use its strategic weaponry. and that’s not happening, the group is still far from being pushed to do that, all what’s in use is operational assets that Israel experienced over the years, or saw Hezb using in Syria or Iraq. And that’s preventing Israel from knowing or tracing the warehouses or launching areas for such weapons.

That’s one of the reasons why an all out war hasn’t erupted yet. Hezbollah’s use of modified Katyusha rockets isn’t only helping to drive the fight further, but also depleting Israel’s stockpiles of antimissile batteries. It’s also burning hundreds of thousands of dollars in each launch.

This salvo, maybe 40 rockets (1x$2000 each) was intercepted by Iron dome (1x$70,000 each), the math is part of the war here.

Israel too is intensifying its strikes to deplete Hezbollah forces, assassinations is proving to be a very serious issue for Hezb.

  • US plans to set up #drone #bases in coastal West Africa to stem Islamist advance and counter China – The North Africa Post
    https://northafricapost.com/74350-us-plans-to-set-up-drone-bases-in-coastal-west-africa-to-stem

    (Janvier 2024)

The United States is reportedly seeking to set up military drones bases along the West African coast in an urgent effort to stop the spread of Islamist militants, counter the Chinese influence in the region, and to support the development and democracy of its African allies.

Washington is holding preliminary talks with Ghana, Ivory Coast and Benin to allow American unarmed reconnaissance drones to use airfields in these countries on the Atlantic Ocean, according to recent reports by The Wall Street Journal. Relatively stable and prosperous, the three coastal countries, along with Togo, now find themselves threatened by al-Qaeda and Islamic State militants that have plagued neighboring Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger in the Sahel region. The plan to station reconnaissance aircraft in Ghana, Ivory Coast and Benin may thus signal a shifting US strategy of retrenchment from these coup-hit and conflict-torn Sahel states.

The recent coup in #Niger has reportedly prompted the United States and #France to announce last October that they were actively exploring alternative countries to host their drone bases for counter-terrorism and surveillance missions. “There are several locations I’ll say that we’re looking at, but nothing’s firmed up. We have talked to some countries about it,” General James Hecker, commander of US Air Forces in Europe and Africa, stated. According to Military Africa, by establishing drone bases closer to the Atlantic Ocean, the US hopes to enhance its ability to monitor and respond to the activities of al Qaeda and Islamic State affiliates and also to deter and disrupt the plans of China, which is seeking to establish its first permanent naval base on the Atlantic coast, in Equatorial Guinea.

The latest wave of covid propaganda is to claim that ~covid anxiety~ is the biggest pandemic problem we’re facing. I have yet to see the data. I have, on the other hand, seen mountains of data indicating structural and functional changes to heart, lungs, brain, and more. 🧵

“But same with the flu!” No. Via ACE receptors and otherwise, SARS-CoV-2 can affect every system, even damage inside blood vessels (yes the tubes that deliver blood everywhere). True, we’ve likely under-appreciated post-influenza sequelae. Still, it seems less and fewer organs.

Did the rapidly spreading airborne virus killing people all around us scare folks? Ummm, yes. People’s experiences, reactions, and coping mechanisms are diverse.
Some lost loved ones, experienced hospitalization/ICU, gained new chronic health issues. Children lost their parents.
Others lost jobs, got off-track with their education, got behind on the basics.

If you’re behind on preventative health, cancer screenings, labwork, please catch up! Knowledge = power.

If you need someone to talk to, please find someone.

    Also, check on your people.
As for how we’re living now, there are those with zero regard for covid risk, and there are those who continue to mitigate it (to varying degrees of course). We know there are layers of protection, and the more layers, the better. Mask, vax, gather outside, test, isolate when +.

The best intervention we can do as a society is create & maintain high standards for indoor ventilation/air exchange/filtration, especially important in schools & congregate settings, with transparency like the restaurant letter grade! Create more safe outdoor gathering spaces.

Protecting yourself is a personal choice. It’s a choice that can affect others mainly because C19 is airborne and highly contagious, and because asymptomatic transmission occurs. So a filtration mask is currently our best bet for individual protection when there may be exposure.

Trying to shoo away long covid by insulting those experiencing it is trash. The lack of evidence thus far is noted. Data that “will be presented” at the such-and-such conference is dead to me. Wake me up when the peer reviewed article is published and then we’ll talk.

This trash take is also insulting to all the real researchers who’ve published actual findings. I hope your peer reviewed studies cite them well and explain how your research contributes. If you really care about covid-era behavioral health challenges, let’s hear your plan.

We still have a lot to learn and a ways to go - it’s still early! The more we can quantify and understand, the better we can evolve and tailor our interventions. I hope for better vaccines, better treatments, better diagnostics, and significant advancements in long & post-covid.

Until then I’m continuing to mask, strategically test, gather outdoors as much as possible, improve indoor ventilation/filtration wherever I can, and improve my own understanding through reading the literature and listening to patients and to experts in their respective fields. /

In an ever more digital world, pen and paper are increasingly getting replaced with screens and keyboards in classrooms. Now, a new study has investigated neural networks in the brain during hand- and typewriting. The researchers showed that connectivity between different brain regions is more elaborate when letters are formed by hand. This improved brain connectivity, which is crucial to memory building and information encoding, may indicate that writing by hand supports learning.

    http://palim-psao.over-blog.fr/2024/03/parution-le-19-avril-du-prochain-ouvrage-de-jerome-baschet-quan

  • Israel targets information technology experts as part of its genocide in Gaza
    https://euromedmonitor.org/en/article/6228

The Israeli army has systematically targeted dozens of programmers, information technology experts, and workers in computer engineering, in addition to destroying the headquarters of their companies, as part of the ongoing crime of genocide in the Gaza Strip since 7 October 2023.

Since the beginning of its large-scale attack on Gaza, the Israeli army has killed hundreds of people with intellects and expertise in the blockaded enclave, especially those proficient in information technology, programming, and computer engineering, as well as other elites in the local community such as doctors, academics, and others.

Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor compiled a list of technology specialists, including those with expertise in programming and artificial intelligence, who have been directly killed by the ongoing Israeli attacks.

(...) As part of the widespread destruction inflicted on the technological sector and the depletion of its related infrastructure, Euro-Med Monitor documented that the Israeli army launched direct and devastating attacks that targeted the headquarters of startups specialising in information technology and partnership companies in the Gaza Strip.

The technology sector in the Gaza Strip was severely damaged, with the headquarters of communication companies and other infrastructure being destroyed. Many technical workers were also killed, severely disrupting efforts to continue working and innovating in this vital sector, which is seen as the backbone of all other economic sectors as well as the digital transformation.

About 65 businesses engaged in a variety of technological fields, including software, technical equipment, consulting, technical training, communications, and other subfields, operated in the Gaza Strip prior to the ongoing Israeli military attacks. These businesses employed thousands of young people and recent graduates.

Based on Euro-Med Monitor’s preliminary estimates, programming and IT company headquarters have been almost completely destroyed, while six business incubators in the Strip were damaged, and all technology centers, including those affiliated with Gaza Strip universities, were closed.

On the day new data is out on famine in #GAZA, the Israeli Authorities deny my entry to Gaza.

–Famine is imminent in the northern Gaza Strip, expected to arrive between now and May.
      – Two million people= the entire population of Gaza is facing crisis levels of food insecurity or worse.
      – Half the population has completely exhausted food supplies and coping capacities. They are struggling with catastrophic hunger (IPC Phase 5) and starvation.
      – This is the highest number of people ever recorded as facing catastrophic hunger by the IPC system and double the number just three months ago.
      – Earlier, UNICEF warned that the # of children under two years old suffering from acute malnutrition has doubled in one month.
      – Children are now dying of dehydration & hunger.

      @UNRWA
has by far the largest presence among all humanitarian organisations in Gaza.
My visit today was supposed to coordinate & improve the humanitarian response.

This man-made starvation under our watch is a stain on our collective humanity.
Too much time was wasted, all land crossings must open now. Famine can be averted with political will.

  • One Twin Was Hurt, the Other Was Not. Their Adult Mental Health Diverged. - The New York Times
    https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/06/health/one-twin-was-hurt-the-other-was-not-their-adult-mental-health-diverged.html

    Protégeons les enfants !!!

Why do twins, who share so many genetic and environmental inputs, diverge as adults in their experience of mental illness? On Wednesday, a team of researchers from the University of Iceland and Karolinska Institutet in Sweden reported new findings on the role played by childhood trauma.

Their study of 25,252 adult twins in Sweden, published in JAMA Psychiatry, found that those who reported one or more trauma in childhood — physical or emotional neglect or abuse, rape, sexual abuse, hate crimes or witnessing domestic violence — were 2.4 times as likely to be diagnosed with a psychiatric illness as those who did not.

If a person reported one or more of these experiences, the odds of being diagnosed with a mental illness climbed sharply, by 52 percent for each additional adverse experience. Among participants who reported three or more adverse experiences, nearly a quarter had a psychiatric diagnosis of depressive disorder, anxiety disorder, substance abuse disorder or stress disorder.

To disentangle the effects of these traumas from genetic or environmental factors, the researchers narrowed the pool to “discordant” pairs, in which only one twin reported maltreatment in childhood. An analysis of 6,852 twins from these discordant pairs found that childhood maltreatment was still linked with adult mental illness, though not as strongly as in the full cohort.

“These findings suggest greater influence than I expected — that is, even after very stringent control of shared genetic and environmental factors, we still observed an association between childhood adversity and poor adult mental health outcomes,” said Hilda Bjork Danielsdottir, a doctoral candidate at the University of Iceland and the study’s first author.

A twin who reported maltreatment was 1.2 times as likely to suffer from a mental illness as the unaffected twin in identical twin pairs, and 1.7 times as likely in fraternal twin pairs. This effect was especially pronounced among subjects who reported experiencing sexual abuse, rape and physical neglect.

For decades, researchers have been accumulating evidence that links child abuse and maltreatment to illnesses later in life. A landmark 1998 study of 9,508 adults found a direct correlation between childhood maltreatment and heart disease, cancer, lung disease and depression, often linked by behavior like smoking and alcohol use.

By ruling out the role of genetic factors, the new findings should help dispel any remaining doubt that childhood maltreatment leads to worse mental health in adulthood, said Mark Bellis, a professor of public health at Liverpool John Moores University in Britain, who was not involved in the study.

The findings add to “the increasingly irrefutable evidence that it is going to cost us all a lot less if we invest in tackling” abuse and neglect of children now, he added, rather than “continuing to pay for the epidemic levels of harm” they cause downstream.
