Science Gossip
▻https://www.sciencegossip.org/#
Lots of pretty images, sadly still hard to find.
In the Victorian period, just like today, scientists and members of the public worked together to further scientific discovery. Before computers and cameras they had to draw what they saw. Their drawings are locked away in the pages of Victorian periodicals, such as Science Gossip, Recreative Science and The Intellectual Observer.
Help us to classify their drawings and map the origins of citizen science.

36 Iconic Tokyo Metro Subway Manner Posters 2008-2010 - Gakuranman
▻http://gakuran.com/36-iconic-tokyo-metro-subway-manner-posters-2008-2010
Tokyo Metro (東京メトロ) is Japan’s largest subway system. Take a ride, and you’ll find it hard to miss the catchy posters asking commuters to mind their manners. Since September 1974, every year a new theme and unique monthly designs have been produced, but in recent years perhaps none have been more memorable than the iconic illustrations of graphic artist Bunpei Yorifuji. Beginning in 2008 and spanning 3 years – something rather unusual considering the transient nature of the annual Metro poster themes – the designs were judged a huge success, being replicated and parodied in numerous places across the internet.
J’adore.

Is science only for the rich? : Nature News & Comment
▻http://www.nature.com/news/is-science-only-for-the-rich-1.20650
Few countries collect detailed data on socioeconomic status, but the available numbers consistently show that nations are wasting the talents of underprivileged youth who might otherwise be tackling challenges in health, energy, pollution, climate change and a host of other societal issues. And it’s clear that the universal issue of class is far from universal in the way it plays out. Here, Nature looks at eight countries around the world, and their efforts to battle the many problems of class in science.
United States: How the classroom reflects class divide
China: Low pay powers brain drain
United Kingdom: The paths not taken
Japan: Deepening divisions
Brazil: Progressive policy pays off
India: Barriers of language and caste
Kenya: Easy access but limited prospects
Russia: Positive policy, poor productivity

Les anti-burkinis, 5ème colonne de l’État Islamique | Robin Berjon
▻http://berjon.com/burkiniban

Google’s Clever Plan to Stop Aspiring ISIS Recruits | WIRED

The program, which Jigsaw calls the #Redirect_Method and plans to launch in a new phase this month, places advertising alongside results for any keywords and phrases that Jigsaw has determined people attracted to ISIS commonly search for. Those ads link to Arabic- and English-language YouTube channels that pull together preexisting videos Jigsaw believes can effectively undo ISIS’s brainwashing—clips like testimonials from former extremists, imams denouncing ISIS’s corruption of Islam, and surreptitiously filmed clips inside the group’s dysfunctional caliphate in Northern Syria and Iraq.

▻https://www.elsevier.com/about/company-information/policies/pricing « whose publication is funded by payments that are made by authors, their institution or funding bodies »
@robin : qu’es-ce que tu appelles un format exploitable ? HTML ?

Building Themes with CSS4 Color Features - Cloud Four
▻https://cloudfour.com/thinks/building-themes-with-css4-color-features
There’s something about the way I’ve traditionally applied CSS color values that seems off. It feels a bit arbitrary and rigid compared to the way I write rules for other CSS properties. I derive font size values from a modular scale. I make sure margin and padding values fall in sync with a vertical rhythm. When it comes to color properties, however, my approach is often no approach at all. Colors are simply chosen and bound to various properties.

Glenn Greenwald on Donald Trump, the DNC hack, and a new McCarthyism. [and Brexit]
I just want to submit to you that the mistake the U.K. media and U.K. elites made with Brexit is the exact same one that the U.S. media and U.S. elites are making about Trump. U.K. elites were uniform, uniform, in their contempt for the Brexit case, other than the right-wing Murdochian tabloids. They all sat on Twitter all day long, from the left to the right, and all reinforced each other about how smart and how sophisticated they were in scorning and [being snide] about UKIP and Boris Johnson and all of the Brexit leaders, and they were convinced that they had made their case. Everyone they were talking to—which is themselves—agreed with them. It was constant reinforcement, and anyone who raised even a peep of dissent or questioned the claims they were making was instantly castigated as somebody who was endangering the future of the U.K. because they were endorsing—or at least impeding—the effort to stop Brexit. This is what’s happening now.
(...) The reason why Brexit resonated and Trump resonated isn’t that people are too stupid to understand the arguments. The reason they resonated is that people have been so fucked by the prevailing order in such deep and fundamental and enduring ways that they can’t imagine that anything is worse than preservation of the status quo. You have this huge portion of the populace in both the U.K. and the US that is so angry and so helpless that they view exploding things without any idea of what the resulting debris is going to be to be preferable to having things continue, and the people they view as having done this to them to continue in power. That is a really serious and dangerous and not completely invalid perception that a lot of people who spend their days scorning Trump and his supporters or Brexit played a great deal in creating.
(...) if you are someone who wants to stop Trump or Brexit, your goal should be to communicate effectively with the people who believe it is in their interest to support Trump or Brexit. I think in general there is no effort on the part of media elites to communicate with those people and do anything other than tell them that they are primitive, racist, and stupid.

The problem of the split between the literary and scientific communities is old but as yet unsolved. We look at the role that scholarly publishing could play in bridging it now that a technological shift enables its reinvention. Finally, moving to the social aspects of today’s technology we look at an ethics-based definition of the knowledge communities and see that this ethical stance needs to permeate scholarly publishing as well.

We would not need to suspend many of Luxembourg’s EU rights. In fact, we need only suspend the EU directive that allows companies to pay taxes in a European headquarters country other than where their subsidiaries operate (and only for Luxembourg). It is short, simple, and targeted directly at the means of thievery.
