❝Saudi Arabia's energy ministry said in a statement that Tuesday night's attack, ‌which came as fighting between Yemen's Iran-allied Houthis and the kingdom intensified, had caused a limited fire.

Two of the sources said a fire started on the ninth floor of the south wing of the office block, and spread between the sixth and 10th floors.

Another source added that the top three floors of building, where the office of Aramco CEO Amin Nasser is located, were severely damaged, with part of the ceiling caved in and windows and doors blown out.
Aramco did not immediately reply to a Reuters request for comment.❞

https://www.livescience.com/archaeology/americas/inuit-figurine-a-700-year-old-indigenous-carving-of-a-european-made-a-century-before-columbus

❝This Inuit carving was made a century before Columbus set foot in the Americas and likely depicts a Norseman.

This wooden figurine was discovered in 1977 in an early house built by the ancestors of the Inuit on Baffin Island in northern Canada. The unique carving represents a person wearing European clothing and a cross on their chest. Dated to 1350, the figurine is the earliest Indigenous representation of a European anywhere in the Western Hemisphere and probably depicts a Norseman.

The tiny driftwood carving, which is currently on display at the Canadian Museum of History, measures just 2.1 inches (5.4 centimeters) tall. According to the museum, the featureless face and stumpy arms are common in 14th-century Inuit carvings, but the depiction of a non-Inuit is unique.

The mysterious figure wears a long robe or tunic with a cross on the front ‪—‬ a garment that is similar to those worn in the 11th to 13th centuries by Norse Christians from Greenland. The Norse sagas mention a place called "Helluland," which Leif Eriksson (also spelled Erikson) visited in the early 11th century and is most likely Baffin Island.

Around A.D. 1000, Norse explorers landed in what is now Newfoundland and set up camp at a site archaeologists call l'Anse aux Meadows. Wood buildings and remains from iron production are all that is left of the earliest European settlement in the Americas.

The Norse likely made multiple trips from Greenland to Canada over the centuries in order to trade metal and cloth with the Inuit's ancestors, known as the Thule, and procure walrus ivory in return, as European-origin artifacts have been found in early Inuit houses on Baffin Island. But the Norse eventually abandoned their westward trade routes, possibly due to the resistance of the Indigenous people and the long distance.
This wooden figurine may commemorate a meeting between the Inuit and the Norse and is especially important because it was crafted long before sustained contact in the late 15th century, according to the museum. It is also the earliest evidence of the Indigenous perspective of visitors from the east, revealing which characteristics of the Norse the artisan observed and felt were important to depict.❞

Supertankers Turn From Gulf Oil Transfer Hub Amid Iran’s Attacks
https://gcaptain.com/supertankers-turn-from-gulf-oil-transfer-hub-amid-irans-attacks/

❝(Bloomberg) —
A growing number of empty supertankers have been turning away from the Persian Gulf as escalating Iranian attacks threaten a critical transfer hub for wartime oil shipments.

At least 10 very large crude carriers and several Suezmax vessels approaching the port of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates have stopped or reversed course in recent days, according to tanker-tracking data compiled by Bloomberg.

While other vessels are still continuing on their journeys into the region, the retreat of these tankers amid near-daily attacks around the Strait of Hormuz — some near Fujairah itself — raises fresh concerns over the sustainability of oil flows through the waterway.

Fujairah is commonly signaled as an interim destination by vessels ultimately sailing to the Gulf of Oman — where they can collect cargoes via ship-to-ship transfer — or onward into the Persian Gulf. That makes the number of ships heading toward the port a broader indicator of tanker operators’ appetite for approaching the waterway.

The shift threatens a key workaround that has helped Persian Gulf oil exports recover to near prewar levels. Large crude carriers can wait off Fujairah and in Omani waters outside Hormuz while shuttle tankers make the riskier transit through the strait, bringing out crude and transferring it for onward shipment to buyers.

The system depends on a steady supply of receiving tankers, so a significant retreat from the region by empty VLCCs could slow the flow of crude, tying up the shuttle vessels for longer when tanker availability is already tight.

The pullback is particularly striking given the financial rewards on offer. A global tanker shortage has pushed shipping costs to extraordinary levels. For example, hiring a vessel to haul oil from the US to China now costs more than launching a rocket into space.❞

For example, hiring a vessel to haul oil from the US to China now costs more than launching a rocket into space.

Saudi Arabia Strikes Houthi Targets as Red Sea War Escalates
https://gcaptain.com/saudi-arabia-strikes-houthi-targets-as-red-sea-war-escalates/

❝RIYADH, Oct 13 (Reuters) – Yemen’s Iran-allied Houthis said Saudi Arabia was attacking the Yemeni capital Sanaa on Tuesday after a Saudi-led coalition warned civilians to stay away from an oil depot on the city’s outskirts, part of a rapidly escalating war between the sides.

The Houthis have for a week been targeting Saudi airports, including a strike on Riyadh on Saturday that killed 13 people, in retaliation for the kingdom’s backing of government forces against the Houthis in Yemen’s reignited civil war.

Houthi-run Al-Masirah television reported that the Saudi-led coalition had targeted the Yemen Petroleum Company’s Sabah central station, a fuel depot on the outskirts of Sanaa.

The coalition said in a statement on Tuesday evening that it attacked the station and other sites in an operation aimed at “neutralizing the capabilities of Houthis” to threaten the kingdom, Yemen and international waterways.

It said the Iran-aligned group was using the sites in Sanaa, Hodeidah and Dhamar to “supply its arsenal of missiles and drones” to attack Saudi Arabia and commercial vessels in the Red Sea.

YPC said the facility did not currently hold any stocks of petroleum products and that targeting it did not affect oil reserves or supply chains.

However, the Houthis had earlier threatened a “harsh and painful” response to any strikes on Sanaa, with spokesperson Yahya Saree saying targets could include the Saudi Aramco headquarters in Dhahran and an oil refinery in Riyadh.

The group renewed earlier warnings it had issued to oil workers in Saudi Arabia, telling them to stay away from sites that could be potential targets.

The Saudi cabinet, chaired by de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, issued a statement saying the Houthis would face consequences for their repeated attacks on the kingdom.

Saturday’s ballistic missile strike on Riyadh airport was the deadliest in Saudi Arabia for a decade, with further attacks grounding flights across the country even as it hosts a major energy conference.

*REIGNITED YEMEN WAR*
Saudi Arabia resumed its military campaign in Yemen in support of the internationally recognized government in a bid to reverse the Houthis’ sudden gains last month when they swept down the Red Sea coast to the critical Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

The strait, the southern gateway to the Red Sea, has become a more vital route for Saudi and other global energy supplies since the start of the Iran war in February, when Tehran closed the Hormuz Strait leading from the Gulf to the Indian Ocean.

While a government offensive aimed at driving back the Houthis beginning a week ago pushed them off the area closest to the strait, the group remains embedded nearby and has made gains of its own around the city of Taiz this month.

Saudi Arabia has been seeking wider support from allies for its campaign against the Houthis and to help it ward off their missile and drone attacks.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan told Mohammed bin Salman on Tuesday that Ankara would stand by the kingdom, the Turkish presidency said.

Turkey and Pakistan signed a mutual defense pact with Saudi Arabia this summer, though Turkey still needs to ratify the treaty in parliament.

US President Donald Trump also spoke to Mohammed bin Salman on Tuesday, he told reporters, adding that the Houthis were “behaving very badly.”

He said he may ask Erdogan to intervene in support of Saudi interests.

Washington, Saudi Arabia’s strongest ally and longtime security guarantor, has so far rebuffed Saudi efforts to bring it directly into the war against the Houthis.

The Yemen conflict has resumed as a spillover from the wider US-Iran war that began with the US-Israeli attack on the Islamic Republic starting on February 28.

Iran, Riyadh’s longtime arch regional rival, has offered to mediate between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis, its foreign minister Abbas Araqchi said on Sunday in statements reiterated by the ministry on Monday.❞

Soaring Tanker Rates Leave Americas Awash in Crude Oil
https://gcaptain.com/soaring-tanker-rates-leave-americas-awash-in-crude-oil/

❝HOUSTON, Oct 12 (Reuters) – Dense heavy crude, which oil refiners around the world favor for its typically low cost, is piling up in the Americas as soaring freight rates have stifled exports and US refiners have been running close to their limits.

The glut in North and South America has opened an unusual split in the global oil market, as buyers in Asia and Europe struggle with supply shortages and benchmark prices hold above $100 a barrel.

Heavy crude is a denser type of oil that Asian, many US, and some European refineries are typically configured to process. It is usually cheaper than light crude, offering refiners better margins, when shipping costs are affordable.

“It’s all freight,” said Scott Shelton, an energy specialist at TP ICAP. Venezuela, the US and Canada all produce more oil than they consume, he said, so they rely on exports to Asia to balance their crude markets.

With US diesel prices soaring, the cheap, stranded barrels should be getting snapped up in a diesel-starved market, since heavy crude yields more of the fuel than lighter grades. But Gulf Coast refiners have already bought as much as they can process, analysts and traders said.

Venezuelan exports have surged since the US captured former President Nicolas Maduro in January, then started pushing to reactivate the country’s oil sector. Canadian output is at a record and Washington has released more than 130 million barrels from its emergency reserve.

The cost of hiring a supertanker from the US Gulf Coast to Asia, meanwhile, has more than quintupled since February, as ship-to-ship transfers in the Gulf of Oman tie up vessels worldwide.

“You need a ship and the price of ships are going up, and the availability ships are going down,” Shelton said.

Flagship Canadian, Colombian and Ecuadorian heavy crude grades have all eased more than $10a barrel to trade at their lowest level in six weeks, according to price reporting agency Argus Media. Prices for Western Canada Select, excluding shipping or insurance costs, was around $74 on Thursday; Colombia’s main grade Vasconia was trading at around $84; and Ecuador’s Oriente was trading at around $76, Argus said.

Venezuelan crude excluding shipping costs was trading around $74.50 a barrel on Thursday, two traders said.

Shipping oil on a supertanker from the US Gulf Coast to Europe was estimated to cost around $46 million, or $24.50 a barrel, last week, including ship-to-ship transfer and other costs, according to Georgios Sakellariou, a Signal Maritime analyst. That compares with $6.5 million or around $4 a barrel before the Iran war broke out in late February.

The cost of a tanker from the Americas to Asia rose to more than $80 million, or about $40 a barrel, last week compared with around $10-15 million near the start of the year.

*US REFINERS MAXED OUT*
US refineries have operated at about 93.5% capacity on an average weekly basis so far this year, according to the Energy Information Administration. That is the highest level in 28 years as they crank out as much as fuel as they can to profit from record high diesel prices. While those refineries are complex and geared to run a heavier crude slate, they can only process it up to a certain percentage of their total capacity.

“While Venezuela and US emergency barrels have been a factor for months now, leading to near maximum US coker utilization, high freight is now a further headwind to shipping these barrels east and is forcing heavy sour storage builds in the Americas,” Irwin added. Cokers convert residual crude oil into feedstocks for diesel and gasoline production, and a heavier crude slate requires them to run at a higher capacity.

Many US refineries are also configured for offshore Gulf of Mexico crude such as Mars Sour, rather than Canadian or Venezuelan oil that must be mixed with lighter feedstock.❞

Saudi Eyes 10 Million Barrels a Day of Oil Pipe Capacity
https://gcaptain.com/saudi-eyes-10-million-barrels-a-day-of-oil-pipe-capacity/

❝Oct 12, 2026 (Bloomberg) –Saudi Arabia is looking at ways to expand its oil pipeline capacity to destinations outside the Persian Gulf to 10 million barrels a day within two to three years, said Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman.

As the kingdom fends off waves of Houthi attacks on energy and aviation infrastructure, it is seeking to increase its resilience. The plans include improvements to pumping stations on the East-West pipeline — the key conduit for exports since the start of the US-Iran war — and repurposing a gas pipeline to transport crude, Prince Abdulaziz said.

The East-West pipeline was carrying 5.8 million barrels a day as of Oct. 6, the minister said last week, following the resumption of operations after a September drone attack. Its wartime role been critical both for crude exports from the port of Yanbu on the Red Sea, and to supply refineries on the kingdom’s west coast.

“We may end up with 10 million barrels within the next two to three years,” he told the WPC Energy Congress in Riyadh on Monday. “We are improving the pump stations of the East-West pipeline.”

The repurposed gas pipeline could carry about 1.2 million barrels a day of crude within seven to eight weeks, with further investment potentially raising that volume to 3 million, the minister said.

The initial arrangement would be temporary. Prince Abdulaziz said he had told Saudi Aramco Chief Executive Officer Amin Nasser that the pipeline could transport oil until May, after which it would need to be cleaned and returned to service for domestic gas supplies during the summer.

The kingdom is working with Aramco on dual-use capability, installing pumping stations and compressors so the pipeline can carry oil or gas depending on circumstances, he said.

The minister also highlighted the value of the East-West pipeline during the crisis, saying its use had more than recovered its cost. The route connects Saudi Arabia’s eastern oil-producing region with the Red Sea, providing an alternative to shipping crude through the Strait of Hormuz.❞

Deadly Attacks on Saudi Arabia Risk Wider War That Draws In US
https://gcaptain.com/deadly-attacks-on-saudi-arabia-risk-wider-war-that-draws-in-us/

❝(Bloomberg) — This weekend’s deadly attacks on Riyadh’s main airport have demonstrated the ability of Yemen’s Houthis to strike at the heart of Saudi power, raising the risk of a dangerous escalation that could draw in the US.

Saturday’s strike killed 12 people and wounded 309, while an attack on Sunday killed one person and injured 11. The Houthis swiftly claimed the attacks, saying they were a response to “Saudi aggression,” including a strike on the airport in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa.

Saudi fighter jets are already backing a counteroffensive by Yemeni government forces after the Houthis seized territory near Bab el-Mandeb, a critical chokepoint for global shipping at the southern entrance to the Red Sea.

The Houthis had largely stayed on the sidelines after the US-Israeli war against Iran began in February. But the latest offensive illustrates how the group — a member of Iran’s so-called axis of resistance — has developed into its own autonomous fighting force, with its own sophisticated weapons supply chain and an ability to operate and escalate as they see fit, at times in coordination with the Islamic Republic.

Despite the airport strikes and fresh tanker attacks around the Strait of Hormuz, oil dropped on Monday. Traders instead weighed President Donald Trump’s claim of an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, with Brent crude slipping below $104 a barrel after a two-day gain.

The attacks put de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman under mounting pressure to escalate a war the country has spent years trying to escape, against an opponent that’s arguably more capable than it’s ever been. They also present difficult choices for the US and the kingdom’s new defense partners, Turkey and Pakistan, over how far to go in helping Saudi Arabia respond.

“By escalating their attacks, they are trying to pressure Saudi Arabia into stepping back and halting its air campaign,” said Ahmed Nagi, the International Crisis Group’s senior analyst for Yemen. “Riyadh sees these strikes as a serious escalation, particularly given their unprecedented nature, and is likely to respond with greater military pressure.”

With an American among those killed on Saturday, Trump also faces growing pressure to act. Asked on Saturday whether the US would join strikes against the Houthis, he said: “We may. We’re going to look at it.”

“Riyadh will want direct US strikes against the Houthis, air defense capabilities, increased intelligence sharing, and political cover for an intensified campaign in Yemen,” said William Usher, a former senior Middle East analyst at the Central Intelligence Agency.

The Saudi-led coalition blamed the Houthis for Saturday’s attack, calling it “a full-fledged war crime.”

Saudi Arabia led a coalition that intervened in Yemen in 2015 to restore the internationally recognized government, only to spend years bombing the Houthis without dislodging them. A UN-brokered truce in 2022 sharply reduced the fighting and offered Riyadh a way to wind down its involvement while the militant group’s capabilities and reach grew.

Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan and his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi discussed the latest escalation in the region in a phone call, according to a report Sunday by the state-run Saudi Press Agency.

Saudi Arabia has spent billions of dollars building one of the region’s most sophisticated militaries, equipped with American F-15 fighter jets and Patriot missile defenses whose interceptors cost as much as $5 million apiece. Yet repeated strikes have shuttered the international airport serving its capital, grounding hundreds of flights and forcing schools to move online.

The attacks may be a sign of the pressure the Houthis are facing in Yemen. After the group seized the Red Sea port of Mokha and territory near Bab el-Mandeb last month, Yemeni government forces launched a counteroffensive backed by Saudi warplanes. The coalition says it has recaptured Mokha and destroyed scores of Houthi military targets.Play Video

“The Houthis are feeling the impact of the Saudi airstrikes carried out over the past few days in areas under their control,” Nagi said. “They have lost a significant number of fighters, and several strategic sites have been hit, including drone workshops, arms depots and telecommunications towers.”

Still, the Houthis retain an arsenal of Iranian-designed ballistic missiles capable of reaching Riyadh and cheap attack drones that can be assembled locally. The group has survived years of Saudi and US bombing campaigns, and the latest strikes demonstrate how difficult it may be to stop it from inflicting further damage on the kingdom.

“They appear to have enough cheap drones and missiles, as well as the know-how, to conduct long-range strikes against Saudi civilian infrastructure, which is a soft target,” said Stacie Pettyjohn, a senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security think tank who previously worked in strategy at the Pentagon.

The attacks also present difficult choices for Saudi Arabia’s allies, starting with the US, which launched major strikes against the Houthis last year before agreeing to a truce. Trump has sought to avoid further military escalation with Iran ahead of November’s midterm elections, and Washington has so far limited its support for the Saudi offensive to intelligence sharing.

“It is very unlikely that the Saudis can stop the attacks if the US could not — short of sending in ground forces or dramatically improving the capability of the Yemeni fighters it is supporting,” Pettyjohn said. “Suppression requires constant air patrols searching for launchers, which is difficult. And the Yemenis seem to have used the time since the ceasefire with the US to rearm.”

Riyadh has grown frustrated with the limited assistance from its Western allies, according to people familiar with the matter. Britain has provided an air-refueling aircraft, but Saudi requests for additional defensive support in recent weeks have yet to be approved, said the people, requesting anonymity to discuss sensitive matters. France said it will dispatch defensive military equipment to the Saudi Red Sea port of Yanbu.

The escalation also poses a test for Turkey and Pakistan, which signed a defense pact with Saudi Arabia in August, known as the Mecca Defense Alliance. Both have signaled willingness to send troops or weapons to help defend the kingdom, but Turkey has ruled out joining offensive operations against the Houthis.

For Saudi Arabia, the Houthis’ success comes at a challenging time. The kingdom is set to host a series of events aimed at pitching itself as one of the world’s most lucrative investment plays. That includes its flagship Future Investment Initiative, often dubbed Davos in the Desert, which draws Wall Street titans from Goldman Sachs’ David Solomon to BlackRock’s Larry Fink.

Executives at top oil firms including BP and Shell pulled out of the World Petroleum Congress scheduled to start on Sunday, in a sign of how the attacks are already disrupting business in Riyadh. The capital’s financial district, home to the kingdom’s sovereign wealth fund and major foreign banks and consultancies, also shifted to remote work.

The UK government warned Sunday against all but essential travel to Jeddah and Dammam, as well as to all Saudi airports except for Medina. It suggested British citizens consider departing Saudi Arabia via land to neighboring countries.

The Federal Aviation Administration on Sunday issued a warning to all US airlines to exercise caution flying to or over parts of Saudi Arabia “at all altitudes.”

Australia on Monday updated its advice for Riyadh’s main airport to “Do not Travel” and advised citizens to reconsider their need to travel to Saudi Arabia.

The attacks come as the Middle East’s largest economy faces growing financial strain after years of heavy spending on the crown prince’s Vision 2030 transformation agenda. The government this month increased its budget deficit projection and said the economy will probably contract 3.6% this year, making foreign investment and financing even more critical.

“The latest events may be a disruption to foreign investment but investors and partners won’t be pulling out. They will be observing and waiting to get in,” said Said El-Saadi, chief executive of Access KSA, a Saudi-based international business advisory firm.

Still, Saudi leaders may conclude they have little choice but to escalate if they want to end the attacks and restore peace.

“The Houthis have always been aggressive and willing to take risks,” said Nadwa Al-Dawsari, associate fellow at the Middle East Institute. “They only back down when faced with a credible threat, and so far, they haven’t faced one.”❞

Six Ships Struck in Single Day as Hormuz Attacks Accelerate
https://gcaptain.com/new-reports-reveal-five-more-ships-hit-near-hormuz/

❝Six commercial vessels were reported struck in and around the Strait of Hormuz on October 11, including five tankers and a container ship, as attacks on merchant shipping continue to escalate across the region.

UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) issued five additional attack warnings, four of them time-late reports, adding to an earlier tanker attack already documented in Sunday’s Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC) advisory.

The six reports describe five vessels struck while transiting the Strait of Hormuz and a sixth tanker attacked near Sohar anchorage, Oman, in the Gulf of Oman.

The latest warnings, numbered 165-26 through 169-26, include an outbound product tanker, an outbound crude oil tanker, another outbound tanker and an inbound container ship, all struck by unidentified projectiles while passing through the strait.

UKMTO confirmed that the crew of one outbound tanker was safe, although the environmental impact remained unknown. The other reports provided no details on casualties or the extent of damage.

The fifth incident involved a tanker near Sohar anchorage that was struck by an uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV). UKMTO initially classified the incident as suspicious activity before upgrading it to an attack. Local authorities were assisting with the evacuation of the crew, while damage and environmental assessments remained incomplete.

An earlier attack, reported under UKMTO warning 164-26, involved another outbound tanker struck on its port side by an unidentified projectile. According to JMIC, the vessel sustained damage to its steering gear room and port-side water tank. No injuries were reported, and the tanker was proceeding to Fujairah anchorage.

The six reported attacks add to a growing series of incidents since late September, with ships struck while entering and leaving the Strait of Hormuz, at anchor off the United Arab Emirates and elsewhere inside the Persian Gulf.

The reports also underscore the difficulty of establishing the full extent of the attacks as they happen. Four of the latest incidents were reported after the fact, meaning security assessments and official incident counts may not reflect the most recent attacks.

The latest incidents follow a JMIC advisory issued Sunday that maintained the Strait of Hormuz security threat at SEVERE, its second-highest classification, warning that further deliberate attacks on merchant shipping were highly likely.

At the time of that assessment, JMIC had recorded three confirmed attacks in the Strait of Hormuz over the preceding 72 hours, including an earlier incident reported late. The four additional time-late reports now add to an already deteriorating security picture.

JMIC also warned that attacks were spreading beyond the strait’s transit lanes, with vessels targeted at anchorages and inside the Persian Gulf.

The escalation comes as the United States continues efforts to restore commercial shipping through Hormuz despite continuing attacks.

According to JMIC, U.S. Naval Cooperation and Guidance for Shipping (NCAGS) data showed approximately 29 vessel transits per day over the preceding 72 hours, compared with a historical average of roughly 138 daily transits. Independent tracking data, however, indicated substantially fewer vessels passing through the strait.

The differing figures reflect an ongoing gap between U.S.-reported transit activity and independently observed shipping movements.

The latest attacks also come amid continuing U.S. naval blockade operations against Iranian shipping. On October 10, U.S. forces disabled the bulk carrier Ocean Molica in the Gulf of Oman after the vessel allegedly attempted to evade the blockade, according to U.S. Central Command.

The U.S. military action was separate from the six attacks reported on October 11.

For commercial operators, the continuing strikes present a serious obstacle to any sustained recovery in traffic through the strait, regardless of whether navigational channels have been cleared or U.S. forces can facilitate individual passages.

The latest reports also highlight the continuing risks facing civilian crews as ships attempt to enter and leave the Persian Gulf.

UKMTO has urged vessels to transit with caution and report suspicious activity while authorities investigate the incidents.❞

https://www.latribune.fr/article/tech/12241525731335/data-centers-pourquoi-les-frappes-de-drones-sur-yandex-en-russie-inquietent-le-secteur-du-cloud

https://sciencebusiness.net/news/international-news/concern-after-europeans-endorse-us-science-agenda

❝Germany, the UK, Italy and others joined calls for “new institutional models” despite fears of an anti-university motive by the Trump administration

Germany’s biggest research funder has said it is “concerned” after Berlin, plus several other European countries, endorsed a controversial US-led science policy statement.

On October 4, the White House announced that 16 countries, including Germany, the UK, Italy, Greece, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Poland, Japan and South Korea had backed the Kyoto Vision for a Golden Age of Science.

The document, agreed on the margins of the annual Science and Technology in Society forum in Kyoto, which gathers science ministers from across the world, appears uncontroversial at first sight. It’s a one-page statement, without any concrete measures, that touches on reducing administrative burden on scientists, experimenting with new funding models and the use of “super intelligence” in science, the Trump administration’s preferred term for artificial intelligence.❞

https://blogs.alternatives-economiques.fr/groupeduvendredi/2026/10/13/indemnisation-des-accidents-du-travail-un-decret-ouvre-discretement-la-voie-a-la-remise-en-cause-de-la-prise-en-charge-par-les-employeurs

https://www.mediapart.fr/journal/france/071026/chez-les-femmes-victimes-de-cancer-du-sein-la-colere-monte

Forget sleepmaxxing and cold plunging: smoking is the new lifestyle flex among AI researchers.

At least, that's according to Palantir CTO Shyam Sankar, who said some AI researchers are taking up smoking to signal their belief that AI will eventually cure cancer.

"So many AI researchers have started smoking as a way of signaling to other researchers how much they believe in AI," Sankar said in an interview on CBS News' "Face the Nation" on Sunday.

The logic, he said, is: "I believe so much in AI that it's going to cure cancer. So I'm showing you my chips are all in."❞

https://aoc.media/critique/2026/10/12/qui-parle-sur-naza-de-yuval-abraham-et-rachel-szor-et-qui-vit-encore-de-nicolas-wadimoff/

https://www.latribune.fr/article/tech/intelligence-artificielle/50074200725051/openai-anthropic-pourquoi-les-chercheurs-quittent-publiquement-les-poids-lourds-de-lia
