Bahrain has banned three Muslim clerics from preaching in mosques, accusing them of violating the “ethics and principles of religious discourse”, in what opposition activists said was part of a crackdown on dissent.

State news agency BNA said the Ministry of Justice and Islamic Affairs and Interior Ministry of the Sunni Muslim-ruled kingdom had forbidden Sheikh Kamel al-Hashemi, Adel al-Hamad and Mohammed al-Mansi to preach in and around the capital Manama.

It said the three had ignored warning from authorities to stick to rules set for preachers. Bahrainis said at least two of them were Shi’ites

BNA quoted the Interior Ministry’s Undersecretary for Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs, Sheikh Rashid bin Khalifa Al-Khalifa, as saying Qatar had “targeted specific families and singled out a particular category of people” with no consideration to Bahraini laws.

“The naturalisation of Bahrainis would affect Bahrain’s national security and vital interests negatively,” the agency said on its English website late on Wednesday, quoting the official.

Sheikh Rashid gave no details on who was being targeted for naturalisation or how many had been granted Qatari citizenship.

Bahrain is acutely sensitive to changes in its demographic balance between Shi’ite Muslims and Sunnis.

The House of Saud, facing a potentially wrenching succession to the ailing Abdullah at a time of upheaval across the Arab world, is in a delicate position. As custodian of the holy cities of Mecca and Medina, it is the closest modern equivalent to the old Islamic caliphate. It thus abominates the violent presumption of Isis as much as it abhors the rival brand of pan-Islamic fundamentalism of the Muslim Brotherhood. Yet the kingdom still spews out the corrosive poison that helps fuel religion-based fanaticism. The Isis rampage of destruction of shrines and mosques, for instance, continues the two centuries-old record of Wahhabi iconoclasm. Nor should it be forgotten that the House of Saud used Wahhabi zealots as its shock troops in the last century to unite by force most of the religiously diverse Arabian peninsula – won by the sword in 52 battles over 30 years. There are no churches in Saudi Arabia, and permits to build Shia mosques are rarer than desert rain.

      http://english.al-akhbar.com/content/isis-us-saves-iraq-yet-again

Obama made one thing clear: that he won’t accept the creation of a caliphate anywhere in Syria or Iraq. The almost century-old Saudi quasi caliphate never offended the US or its Western allies – who actually helped create it – although the ideological foundations of Saudi Arabia and ISIS are one and the same. The ISIS official statement about “the destruction of gravesites and tombs” was not published or even covered in the Saudi-dominated Arabic press. They found it too embarrassing to give any coverage to the argument pushed forward by ISIS, whose religious rationalizations and justifications rely on the views and practices of none other than Mohammed ibn ‘Abdul-Wahab, the founder of Wahhabiyyah which is the ruling religio-political doctrine of both Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

ISIS is not something that is alien to religious Muslims although many Muslims are becoming way too defensive in their need to explain to Westerners that “Islam” – what is Islam, and which Islam? – does not really endorse the views and interpretations of ISIS. But that is not inaccurate. Indeed, mainstream Islam (three out of the four schools of Sunni jurisprudence and Ja`farite twelver Shia) frowns upon the views, excesses, practices and interpretations of ISIS. But Wahhabiyyah is fully in sync with ISIS.

The Gaza solidarity festival held at Katara - the Cultural Village on Friday night has helped raise QR148.64mn in donations, officials said yesterday.

The festival was organised by Katara in collaboration with the Palestinian embassy in Doha, Qatar Charity (QC), Qatar Red Crescent (QRC), Sheikh Thani bin Abdullah Foundation for Humanitarian Services (RAF) and other local charities and organisations, including banks and private companies.

The announcement on the donations was made at a press conference in Katara. It was attended by Katara general manager Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim al-Sulaiti, Palestinian ambassador Munir Ghanim, QC director of international development Ibrahim Zainal, RAF CEO Mohamed Salahudin and QRC chairman Dr Mohamed bin Ghanim al-Ali al-Maadid.

The response to Katara’s Gaza solidarity festival, the great turnout at the event and its success highlighted the feelings that locals and expatriates in Qatar have towards the cause of supporting those suffering in Gaza, Dr al-Sulaiti stressed.

“The festival received great support across its activities,” he added, extending his thanks and appreciation to all the partners and participants, including various societies in Katara for their key participation.

Dr al-Sulaiti said the donation campaign would continue. “This blessed campaign will go on so as to tell our distressed brothers in Gaza that we are standing by them against the oppressive siege and aggression. We consider this as the minimum that we can do for our people in Gaza.”

anama: Newspapers in Kuwait on Wednesday published what is presented as a tweet on an account attributed to the leader of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil), Abu Baker Al Baghdadi, in which he said he would attack Kuwait to lure the US into a confrontation.
“The organisation does not seek to get to America [US], but [America] will come to it,” Al Baghdadi reportedly posted in his tweet. “We have a reckoning with America, but we cannot reach there. However, America will come to us, and that will be by [us] entering Kuwait. America will then come to us. We will fight them and we will take our revenge.”
The authenticity of the account or the tweet was not established.

“The state of Kuwait continues to cooperate with the United States and the international community in combatting this dangerous phenomenon,” he said. The United States on Wednesday imposed sanctions on Shafi al-Ajmi and Hajjaj al-Ajmi, accusing them of raising money for Al-Nusra front, a Jihadist group fighting in Syria.

Both men are said to be Kuwaiti. A third man, Abdulrahman al-Anizi, whose nationality was not disclosed, is accused of supporting the so-called Islamic State Jihadist group, which launched a devastating offensive in northwestern Iraq on June 9.

KUNA said that all three men are Kuwaitis. The ambassador said he will follow up on Washington’s decision with the US State Department.

The two Ajmis are very popular figures in Kuwait for championing campaigns to raise funds for the “Syrian and Palestinian peoples”, according to advertisements on social networks, especially Twitter. Their campaigns have been sponsored by leading Kuwaiti clerics. But the two have expressed clear views against the Islamic State, accusing it of having links with the Syrian government, Iran and even the United States.

Following the US decision, the Twitter accounts of the two Ajmis, who together had around 800,000 followers, were suspended. They could not be reached for comment. Anizi did not have an account on Twitter.

Under the order issued by the US Treasury, any assets the men hold in the United States are to be frozen and American citizens and residents are “generally prohibited” from doing business with them.

In other news, MP Dr Mohammad Al-Huwailah urged the government to allocate the area west of Haddiya to be used for housing purposes. Earlier plans to utilize the piece of land for residential projects stalled when Kuwait Petroleum Corporation objected and said that oil pipes run under the area. MP Huwailah said however that studies showed that 90 percent of the area is suitable to be used to build nearly 4,000 houses. He called Oil Minister Dr. Ali Al-Omair to conduct a survey to determine the areas that can be used for housing welfare.
This comes while Al-Rai reported that the Ministry of Housing Affairs plans to resume coordination with the Ministry of Municipality Affairs with regards to the possibility of including the west Haddiya area to the housing projects’ map. The ministries plan to follow a similar mechanism that helped free an area located south of Saad Al-Abdullah to build around 40,000 housing units despite obstacles found there.

In the meantime, Minister of Housing Affairs Yasser Abul heads a meeting for the Public Authority for Housing Welfare this week to execute the plan to allocate houses in the Mutlaa City which has a capacity of more than 30,000 housing units.

Separately, Al-Anba reported yesterday that the Cabinet, under the prime minister’s directions, plans to study the possibility of amending the Penal Code to introduce tougher penalties against rioting and unlicensed demonstrations. The amendments will be discussed and referred to the parliament at the beginning of the new term, according to a government source quoted in the report.

    http://www.euronews.com/newswires/2606498-bahrain-asks-court-to-suspend-main-opposition-groups-activities

Bahrain’s Justice Ministry has asked a court to suspend the activities of the country’s main Shi’ite Muslim opposition group, a move that could set back efforts to restart reconciliation talks in the Gulf Arab kingdom.

Bahrain, home to the U.S. Fifth Fleet, quelled a popular uprising in 2011 when majority Shi’ite Muslims led mass protests demanding a greater role in running the Sunni-ruled island but low level civil unrest has persisted.

The ministry asked for a three-month suspension of Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society “so it can correct its legal status”, state news agency BNA reported on Sunday.

The UAE knew in advance of Israel’s plans for an offensive in Gaza and even offered to fund the operation provided the militant Palestinian outfit Hamas was eliminated in the process, Israel’s Channel 2 claimed in a recent report, according to local Arabic daily Al Sharq. The daily says in a report published today that Israel’s leading national TV station (Channel 2 in Hebrew) disclosed details of secret parleys between the UAE’s foreign minister, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and his Israeli counterpart, Avigdor Lieberman, in Paris at the end of last month.

Both leaders met on the sly in Paris on the sidelines of a meeting of a meeting of foreign ministers from the GCC states and Jordan with US Secretary of State John Kerry.

Israel’s foreign minister was also in the city.

The meeting was to discuss the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian issue.

Al Sharq said the UAE was aware of Israeli’s planned military action in Gaza beforehand and Al Nahyan, at his meeting with Lieberman, expressed his country’s keenness to fund Israeli’s Gaza offensive provided the Hamas movement was annihilated since it had close links to the Muslim Brotherhood.

According to Al Sharq, Channel 2 reported that just a few days ago there was a meeting between Sheikh Abdullah and an Israeli minister in Abu Dhabi.

Sheikh Abdullah’s Security Adviser, Mohamed Dahlan, was also present. Dahlan, a Palestinian, is a former Fatah member expelled from the party and Gaza and now lives in the UAE.

Bahrain has charged the country’s most senior opposition leader and one of his aides with holding an illegal meeting with a US diplomat, the public prosecutor’s office said yesterday.

It said Al Wefaq party leader Sheikh Ali Salman and his political assistant, Khalil Al Marzouq, should have obtained permission before meeting Tom Malinowski, US Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labour.

Bahrain expelled Malinowski earlier this week, saying he had “intervened flagrantly” in the country’s internal affairs by holding the meeting. The United States has said it is “deeply concerned” about his treatment and is considering a response.

The incident has opened a rift between Washington and one of its main regional allies. Bahrain hosts the headquarters of the US Fifth Fleet but has bristled at American criticism over its human rights record since suppressing a popular uprising in 2011.

In Washington, the US State Department yesterday said it had summoned a senior envoy from Bahrain — the chargé d’affaires of its embassy in Washington — on Tuesday to formally protest Malinowski’s expulsion.

“We look to the Government of Bahrain to take actions consistent with our strong bilateral relationship. We also look to all sides to recommit themselves to the reconciliation process, which remains the focus of our diplomatic engagement,” State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a statement.

Psaki previously has said the United States is considering what steps to take in response to the expulsion but offered no details.

The public prosecutor said Salman and Marzouq were questioned and then charged with “contacting a representative of a foreign government in violation of the political associations law and related ministerial decisions”.

They were freed after guaranteeing their places of residence, it added, without giving any further details.

Al Wefaq confirmed the charges and called them unfair, saying such regulations had never been implemented before and no one had been prosecuted for them.

Malinowski attended a Ramadan evening meeting of Al Wefaq on Sunday and met Salman and an aide again at the US embassy on Monday. He said he was asked whether they had made specific requests of the Americans, and replied that they had not.

Salman and Marzouq were interrogated at the Criminal Investigations Department on Wednesday before they were summoned to appear at the public prosecutor’s office yesterday. Salman said he was questioned for about half an hour, without his lawyer, “about the content of the (embassy) meeting and what was discussed at it.”

A court in Bahrain last month cleared Marzouq of terrorism charges.

The Gulf island kingdom is ruled by a Sunni Muslim royal family, but the majority of its population are Shias, whose political leaders have demanded democratic reforms.

This in light of what Qatar has been involved in before particularly regarding the ambiguous relationship with one Abdulrahman Al Nuaimi of an Al Karama organisation that was bent at promoting the Brotherhood militia and discrediting the UAE, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

Dr. Al-Zayani told Bahrain News Agency (BNA) that the US diplomat’s holding meeting(s) with representatives of a certain political society excluding other components of the Bahraini community who have a significant political role in the community is deemed as an interference in the Kingdom of Bahrain’s internal affairs and it is absolutely incompliant with international diplomatic norms.

He said that such astonishing acts do not reflect the historic bilateral relations which have existed over the eons between the Kingdom of Bahrain and the United States of America.

The GCC Secretary-General concluded that this does not help in confidence-building amongst the components of the Bahraini community, stressing that such acts do not support the positive trend of Bahrain’s ambitious reform programme.

  • Salman and Almarzooq summoned for interrogation

Sheikh Ali Salman, Al Wefaq Secretary General, and his Political Assistant Khalil Almarzooq, have today received an official summons by the Bahraini Ministry of Interior, following a meeting with an US Official. The interrogation will take place tomorrow morning (9th July) at 9am (Bahrain time).

Tom Malinowski, US Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, was yesterday ordered to leave <mailto:http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-28204511> Bahrain by the authorities, after meeting with members of Al Wefaq. Despite international condemnation, Bahrain is now escalating this issue further by targeting leading members of Al Wefaq, who took part in the meeting.

In September 2013 a law was passed that prohibited meetings between opposition societies and international diplomats, without the presence of a representative of the Ministry of Interior. Although no reason for the summons was given, it comes less than 24 hours after the demand for Mr. Malinowski to leave Bahrain.

Commenting on the orders for Mr. Malinowski to leave Bahrain, the State Department said it is “deeply concerned”, <mailto:http://www.state.gov/r/pa/prs/ps/2014/07/228839.htm> whilst Mr. Malinowski himself said the decision was about “undermining dialogue”. <mailto:https://twitter.com/Malinowski/status/486495418583629825> The Bahrain Justice and Development Movement share this analysis, with the summons received by Salman and Almarzooq serving as proof.

The dropping of charges against Almarzooq last month was a potentially positive step towards rebuilding a political process, but this latest attack is yet another example of the “one step forward, two steps back approach” adopted by Bahrain. Once again hardliners within the Authorities are taking control to scupper any plans towards reform.

Given the chance to take full control, Bahrain’s hardliners will turn Bahrain into a closed society, barring international observers and unleashing heavy repression and human rights abuses.

The Bahrain Justice and Development Movement condemn the summons received by Salman and Almarzooq, as well as the decision to demand that a stop State Department official leave Bahrain. We call on the Bahrain authorities to rescind the summons, or at least to make sure no false charges are attributed to Salman and Almarzooq. Furthermore, we call on the authorities to end the stalling and to immediately begin a new political process that takes the country towards serious democratic reform.

Ali Alaswad, a resigned Bahraini MP from Al Wefaq, said:

/“After the State Department rejected the removal of Mr. Malinowski, the authorities in Bahrain are turning their attention to Al Wefaq instead. In any country, anywhere in the world, international observers and diplomats have a right to meet with political leaders. This shows just the lengths Bahrain will go to in order to protect its image, and that clearly they have something to hide.”/

The ministry said in a statement that US Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labour Tom Malinowski was ordered to leave after meeting Bahrain’s opposition group, Al Wifaq.

Bahrain ordered a top US diplomat to leave the country on Monday, the Foreign Ministry said, after he met a leading opposition group.

The ministry said in a statement that US Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labour Tom Malinowski is not welcome in Bahrain.

It said he intervened in the country’s domestic affairs by holding meetings with some groups at the expense of others.

The statement said that such meetings “segregate” the people of the nation. His actions, added the statement, “run counter to conventional diplomatic norms”.

Despite the diplomatic spat, the Foreign Ministry statement said relations between Bahrain and the US remain strong and important. “The government of Bahrain asserts that this should not in any way affect the two countries’ relationship of mutual interests,” the statement said.

Malinowski was ordered to leave after meeting Bahrain’s opposition group, Al Wifaq. He arrived in the country on Sunday and was scheduled to stay for three days, but his visit was cut short by the abrupt order to depart a day early. He also had meetings scheduled with government officials.

Two US officials in Washington confirmed that Malinowski has been ordered to leave but is still there while the logistics of his departure are worked out. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the matter.
