But Hezbollah fell in the same hole that all supporters of the Syrian repressive regime fell in: that they championed the uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia, and then suddenly changed course when the uprising hit Syria. Only then, Arab uprisings became the work of an American-Zionist plot. Nasrallah did talk about the media hype and the propaganda but he then addressed Homs: he said that there were exaggerations about Homs and that he investigated and found out that “there was nothing.” That statement about Homs, when people have been dying daily, would offend Syrians and non-Syrians alike. Of course, Saudi critics of Nasrallah are the last people to talk: they support Saudi repression and they forgot about decades of support by the House of Saud for the Assad regime.

How much damage can the party’s stance on Syria cause it? It depends on the outcome of the Syrian crisis. But Hezbollah rose not due to its political positions or mass mobilization. They rose due to their military performance. In fact, they started as a secretive underground organization that shunned public work. Hezbollah will most likely out-survive the Syrian regime, but the Syrian crisis will most likely change Hezbollah.
