based on the limited data that’s available, there are an estimated 110,000 women in more than 3,000 local jails, and despite their growing presence, jail resources continue to be mostly targeted at the male population and sometimes fail to meet even the most basic needs of women who end up behind bars almost entirely because of poverty, mental health issues, and exposure to abuse.
