Jordan: 70,000 Syrians Trapped at Border. Resume Food, Water, Medical Care for Asylum Seekers

(Beirut) – Jordan should immediately allow humanitarian agencies to resume life-saving aid deliveries to 70,000 Syrians stuck in appalling conditions at its northeastern border. The authorities should also resume procedures allowing Syrians to leave the border area for refugee screening in Jordan.

“Every day in Syria a new plane dropped a bomb on us. We ran away [to another part of Syria]; then bombs also fell there, so we ran here. This is a very bad climate - there is a shortage of water. Sometimes they don’t bring the water and the taste is bad. It’s not a life. All the children in the camp have diarrhea from the water or the food. The biggest quantity of food is stolen by a tribe. When there are food shortages sometimes we don’t get any for one week. There are also huge mice and scorpions. We asked the agencies for mice traps but we didn’t get any; the mice destroyed everything and my children have mouse bites. Shelters at #Hadalat Border Crossing, Jordan-Syria Border

This map illustrates shelters in the area of the Hadalat crossing on the Syrian-Jordanian border. Using a satellite image collected by the Deimos-2 satellite on 13 July 2016, UNOSAT located 2,132 probable shelters. This is a 9% increase in shelters since the previous UNOSAT analysis done using an image collected 14 May 2016. Due to the small size and the irregularity of the shelters it is likely that some shelters may have been missed in this analysis, or some shelters were included erroneously. Due to the scale of this map and the lack of suitable border information at this scale, the border in this map has been excluded. This map is intended for field support and local authorities should be consulted for boundary information. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field. Syria-Jordan border: 75,000 refugees trapped in desert no man’s land in dire conditions

Video footage and satellite images showing makeshift grave sites and burial mounds offer a rare glimpse inside a desert no man’s land between Jordan and Syria where tens of thousands of refugees who have been virtually cut off from humanitarian aid for two months are stranded, said Amnesty International.

75,000 Syrians are trapped near Jordan’s border. Satellite images show some are dying.

Over the past five years, Jordan has become one of the biggest recipients of refugees fleeing its war-torn neighbor, Syria. Almost 700,000 Syrians have been registered as refugees in the country, which has a population of just 6.5 million. Those are just the ones who have registered; Jordanian officials say the real number is far over 1 million.

UN and Jordan near deal on stranded Syrian refugees
