Ah !

      A 21st-Century Migrant’s Essentials : Food, Shelter, Smartphone

BELGRADE, Serbia — The tens of thousands of migrants who have flooded into the Balkans in recent weeks need food, water and shelter, just like the millions displaced by war the world over. But there is also one other thing they swear they cannot live without: a smartphone charging station.

“Every time I go to a new country, I buy a SIM card and activate the Internet and download the map to locate myself,” Osama Aljasem, a 32-year-old music teacher from Deir al-Zour, Syria, explained as he sat on a broken park bench in Belgrade, staring at his smartphone and plotting his next move into northern Europe.

Surprised that Syrian refugees have smartphones? Sorry to break this to you, but you’re an idiot

“Hey, those people fleeing war in Syria aren’t poor at all! Look, they all have smartphones!” is one increasingly tedious complaint that has been bubbling away on social media recently. Owning a mobile phone, it seems, should render one ineligible for help when trying to stop yourself and your family from dying in a war.

it is actually a fairly progressive stance: just weeks ago the anti-immigration brigade were complaining that migrants are unskilled and just want our benefits. And now they’re arguing that migrants are too wealthy instead, implicitly arguing we should prioritise helping the poor.

Questions people ask: “Why do refugees have expensive mobile phones?”

In the wake of the influx of refugees into Germany, anger has risen over the perceived benefits that the newcomers are receiving. So a group of Berlin illustrators have decided to use art to dispel the myths.

Phones – crucial to survival for refugees on the perilous route to Europe

For refugees trying to reach Europe, a mobile phone is not a luxury. It is as important as the clothes on their back or even the boat they climb in to cross the Mediterranean.

New research show that smart phones are an essential tool and a threat for refugees

The ‘Mapping Refugee Media Journeys: Smart Phones and Social Media Networks’ report has been published and is based on research led by Professor Marie Gillespie at the OU in partnership with France Mèdias Monde. The research identified a huge gap in the provision of relevant, reliable and timely news and information for refugees, forcing them to rely on unreliable sources circulating on social media, exposing them to even greater risks and dangers, and exacerbating an already dire Humanitarian crisis.
