Blade Runner 2017: Quartz created a bot to hunt down political news bots on Twitter » Nieman Journalism Lab
    ▻http://www.niemanlab.org/2017/10/blade-runner-2017-quartz-created-a-bot-to-hunt-down-political-news-bots-o

The new #bot, @probabot_, is designed to search #Twitter for accounts that are heavily focused on political topics. These accounts are fed into a tool called #Botometer, which uses machine learning to determine the probability that an account is assisted by or run exclusively by a bot. Quartz has already used the tool to classify over thirty accounts, many of which have tweeted hundreds of thousands of times and have thousands of followers. One bot that Quartz’s bot identified, for example, has tweeted or has been retweeted 1.14 million times since April. Quartz has created a Twitter list for all the accounts that @probabot_ has identified as bots.

A new program wants to help more people in news orgs — beyond journalists — get literate with data

“If we want to make the case that #data is good for democracy, it can’t only be good for democracy for IT people and tech people.”

#Mada_Masr, Egypt’s poster child for digital news, begins its foray into a reader-funded model

“Our model is built on our specific offerings, but also the broader context of Egypt, people’s purchasing power, and that of our readers abroad.”

Google is bringing adblocking to Chrome, and will let publishers charge readers who use other adblockers » Nieman Journalism Lab
    ►http://www.niemanlab.org/2017/06/google-is-bringing-adblocking-to-chrome-and-will-let-publishers-charge-re

Google is launching an adblocker for its Chrome browser next year, according to multiple reports (and confirming rumors from the spring). It will allow publishers to charge readers who have other adblockers installed a set amount per pageview, the Financial Times reported:

[Google] is launching “funding choices” where publishers can set a price per page view for consumers using ad blockers to pay — or abandon their blockers and see the ads. Google will track how many pages people view and charge them through a new version of their Google Contributor service.

Google hasn’t announced or confirmed its Chrome adblocker or micropayments-for-adblock-users plan — and considers it a “filter,” not a “blocker” — but it’s been briefing publishers and advertisers, according to the Journal, reportedly giving publishers a six-month heads up to prepare:

To help publishers prepare, Google will provide a self-service tool called “Ad Experience Reports,” which will alert them to offending ads on their sites and explain how to fix the issues. The tool will be provided before the Chrome ad blocker goes live, the people familiar with the plans say.

As described to publishers, Google’s feature will block all ads on sites that have a certain level of unacceptable ads. Publishers have been advised to ensure their sites are compliant if they want their ads to be displayed.

This site is “taking the edge off rant mode” by making readers pass a quiz before commenting
    ▻http://www.niemanlab.org/2017/03/this-site-is-taking-the-edge-off-rant-mode-by-making-readers-pass-a-quiz-

Digital security is a controversial topic, and the conversation around security issues can become heated. But the conversation in the comments of the article was respectful and productive: Commenters shared links to books and other research, asked clarifying questions, and offered constructive feedback.

The team at NRKbeta attributes the civil tenor of its comments to a feature it introduced last month. On some stories, potential commenters are now required to answer three basic multiple-choice questions about the article before they’re allowed to post a comment. (For instance, in the digital surveillance story: “What does DGF stand for?”)

Remarque intéressante (et pas franchement surprenante):

However, when NRKbeta stories — such as the story on digital surveillance — are placed on the main NRK homepage, they attract readers who aren’t regulars, which can bring down the level of conversation.

Getting to the root of the “#fake_news” problem means fixing what’s broken about journalism itself

At MisinfoCon, stopping “fake news” wasn’t the only focus: Issues from news literacy to newsroom standards and reader empathy to ad revenue were all up for discussion.

The Local News Lab is dedicated to creative experiments in journalism sustainability. We believe the future of local news depends on creating new kinds of collaboration between journalists, newsrooms, and communities. The Lab is a project of Democracy Fund.

Je pose ça là sans avoir eu le temps de fouiller si y’avait des trucs vraiment intéressants pour des médias alternatifs.
