Journalist Lea Majcen is an overnight celebrity in Slovenia, after stumping government official Tilen Smolnikar with basic interview questions about his work as head of the country’s renewable energy sector. A day after the interview, the Slovenian Infrastructure Ministry promptly dismissed Smolnikar.

On Feb. 16, Smolnikar headlined a public hearing on financing for renewable energy sources, such as windmills in Brdo near Kranj. Afterwards, Majcen tried to conduct an interview, but Smolnikar failed to answer nearly a dozen rudimentary questions about the hearing and renewable energy.

To educate younger generations about the horrors of war, particularly the bitter experience of thousands of Singaporeans during the Japanese occupation from 1942 to 1945, Singapore’s government opened a new exhibition on Feb. 16, which it initially named “Syonan Gallery: War and Its Legacies.”

A day after the opening, however, the government changed the gallery’s name to “Surviving the Japanese Occupation: War and Its Legacies.”

Many people reminded the authorities that “Syonan-To,” which means “light of the south,” was the name used by the Imperial Japanese Army when it occupied Singapore during World War II. Many felt the decision to revive the name was an insult to thousands who suffered during the Japanese occupation.

In Bangladesh, right wing religious groups are demanding the removal of a sari-clad sculpture of the Lady Justice in front of the Supreme court. They have threatened a countrywide movement from February 24 if their demands are not met by authorities.

The sculpture was created from stainless steel by renowned artist Mrinal Hoque and is scheduled to be officially opened in April this year. The statue is currently in position outside the court but is still being decorated.

A relatively well-known Russian-Israeli travel blogger who is also a Ukrainian passport holder has been extradited from Belarus to Azerbaijan for visiting a territory that fell under the de facto control of Azerbaijan’s neighbour, Armenia, following a war between the two countries that began while they were both part of the Soviet Union. He faces eight years in jail.

If it isn’t already clear, it should be said now that this is a story that gets very complicated, very quickly.

Late last month, three women decided to sunbathe topless on a public beach in Necochea, Argentina, a seaside town located in the southwest of Buenos Aires Province. As a result, the women soon found themselves at the center of a national scandal that quickly spun out of control.

According to reports by eyewitnesses, a few tourists felt uncomfortable at the sight of exposed breasts and reported the nudity to police, who soon arrived on the scene, and asked the women to cover up. When they refused, the officers proceeded to remove them from the beach. It turned out to be quite an ordeal, and 20 cops were involved, before it was over.

On Jan. 18, 2017, Israel’s Yoav police unit, specifically set up in 2012 for tasks related to “Bedouin resettlement,” faced off against residents and activists when it tried to demolish the Bedouin village of Umm el-Hiran in the Negev region.

This pre-dawn evacuation and destruction involved the use of extreme physical force, stun grenades, pepper spray and rubber and copper bullets. Following the fierce onslaught, resident schoolteacher Yaqub Abu Qi’an and police officer Erez Levy were killed.
