U-Roy obituary
▻https://www.theguardian.com/music/2021/feb/23/u-roy-obituary
Of the many innovations Jamaican music has offered to the world over the past 50 years, the lyrical art of “toasting” has had perhaps the most profound and long-lasting impact. A stylised, poetical form of chatting and scatting, it was brought to prominence in the early 1970s by the reggae deejay U-Roy, who has died aged 78, and has fed into many musical forms, from hip-hop to grime.

With only one colour dead
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Yihla Moja, Yihla Moja
The man is dead

You can blow out a candle
But you can’t blow out a fire
Once the flames begin to catch
The wind will blow it higher

One Little Independent records is re-releasing the band’s entire discography in two distinct versions. The first is essentially a re-release of their albums as they were originally released, untouched by the sands of time. The second, titled The Crassical Collection, could be considered the “Deluxe versions,” which include loads of bonus tracks, remastered sound, archival pictures, and reflections from various band members. To that end, we asked Rimbaud, Ignorant, Gee Vaucher, and Eve Libertine to walk us through the band’s six albums.

Diamanda Galás on Criticism and Context
▻https://daily.bandcamp.com/features/diamanda-galas-feature
Avant-garde composer and performer #Diamanda_Galás occupies a distinct place in history; her work is aesthetically unique, situated at the nexus of contemporary classical composition and activism (her music is inextricable from her personal, passionate work with ACT UP!), its threads going back centuries to folk and pop practices from a wide variety of countries. Those whose musical knowledge is not as wide-ranging as hers tend to misunderstand her. This is something she’s understandably furious about, speaking about the critical reception to her new pair of albums, All the Way, a collection of traditional and jazz standards, and At Saint Thomas the Apostle Harlem, a live recording of, as she describes it, “death songs,” from a 2016 New York performance.

Cabaret Voltaire, “Shadow of Fear” | Bandcamp Daily
▻https://daily.bandcamp.com/album-of-the-day/cabaret-voltaire-shadow-of-fear-review
To anyone wondering why there’s a new Cabaret Voltaire album—their first in 26 years—careening across speaker cones in 2020, the answer’s right in the record title: Shadow of Fear. Kinda sounds like our collective state, doesn’t it? A bleak mindset we simply can’t shake, no matter how positive today’s news is. A shadow of fear.
Shadow of Fear is Cabaret Voltaire’s first studio album in 26 years. Richard H. Kirk is the sole remaining member; he’s released many acclaimed solo albums, having invented bleep techno via his groundbreaking work in Sweet Exorcist. Kirk has formed this new album from a series of pulverising live shows. The tone and personality of CV is ingrained in its core as it dances across techno, dub, house, 1970s Germany and general esoteric explorations coupled with mangled vocal samples.

A Guide to the Music of Archie Shepp, Who Kept Jazz Vitally Political | Bandcamp Daily
▻https://daily.bandcamp.com/lists/archie-shepp-album-list
Nowadays, it’s easy to call Archie Shepp a legend. But back in the late 1950’s, as an upstart saxophonist trying to make his way in New York City, he just wanted to soak up all the brilliance he could. “That’s why I came to New York,” says Shepp, a Philadelphia native. “I wanted to meet all the great players.”
He couldn’t even fathom actually working with John Coltrane, the groundbreaking saxophonist credited with bringing free jazz to the mainstream. Shepp met Coltrane at the landmark Five Spot Cafe, which was just around the corner from his home along East 6th Street. He used to visit the legendary club to hear titans like Thelonious Monk and Johnny Griffin.

Don Cherry (cornet), John Tchicai (alto sax), Archie Shepp (tenor sax), Don Moore (bass), J. C. Moses (drums
The ten tunes (71 min.) on this CD were recorded live at the famous Montmartre jazz club in Copenhagen in 1963. This is one of the best and most important avante garde jazz albums ever made, its importance enhanced by the fact that the quintet was formed specifically to come and play in Copenhagen and was disbanded when the musicians returned to New York. The most “advanced” number is a 15 minute-long tune called “The Trio” which uses both modal scales and changing meters. The band is led by three of the absolute best of the avante garde musicians at the time: Don Cherry on cornet, Archie Shepp on tenor sax and John Tchicai on alto sax. The music is heavily inspired by alto player Ornette Coleman and pianist Cecil Taylor, and features three Ornette Coleman compositions and two by Thelonious Monk. The brilliant, high-energy performance of the musicians on this CD is an example of improvisational, modern jazz at its absolute best.

Where to Begin with Touch and Go Records on Bandcamp
▻https://daily.bandcamp.com/lists/touch-and-go-list
At its heart, Touch and Go Records is a fan operation. Before becoming the indie giant that helped propel acts as diverse as The Jesus Lizard, TV on the Radio, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Tesco Vee and Dave Stimson began Touch and Go as a hand-written fanzine in 1979, a xeroxed love-letter to the gnarlier bits of the American underground. By 1981, the two punks from Lansing, Michigan upped their ambition by releasing the debut 7″ from Maumee, Ohio hardcore kids The Necros on their newly christened Touch and Go Rekords (they’d officially re-brand as “Records” with a “c” for their third release, another Necros record). While the imprint’s first release has since fetched as much as $3,800 in online auctions, just clearing its minuscule run of just 100 copies seemed a pretty lofty goal at the time.
White Zombie : Gods on Voodoo Moon (1985)
White Zombie crawled out NYC’s Lower East Side as an enigma and outcast, surprising themselves and others at the heights they reached. Formed in 1985 by Rob Zombie and Sean Yseult, the two met at Parsons School of Design. Sean arrived there via the high school program at the North Carolina School of the Arts, with a background in classical and blues piano and composition, classical violin, ballet and visual arts. She began performing blues improv in nightclubs at age eight. Rob came from Haverhill MA, with a strong obsession for the Misfits, Alice Cooper, and Kiss, and an even stronger obsession with movies.

White Zombie : It Came from N.Y.C.
It Came From N.Y.C. is the most exhaustive attempt so far to document the band’s wondrously ugly birth. Get reintroduced to White Zombie as New York noise-rock, a grotesque creation that clawed and threatened its way to crossover metal glory.
On June 3rd 2016, Numero resurrects White Zombie’s eternally out-of-print early EPs and LPs as It Came From N.Y.C. Spread across five LPs or three compact discs, all 39 tracks have been remastered by guitarist J. Yuenger and packaged alongside the original lurid artwork. The accompanying 108-page book painstakingly documents White Zombie’s punishing progression through scores of unpublished photos, period discography, a T-shirtography, and tales from the terrifying early years that stitch together the sordid story of a band whose true power eclipsed its mainstream heyday. White Zombie lives. Don’t be afraid.

Scene Report : Stoner Rock in Greece | Bandcamp Daily
▻https://daily.bandcamp.com/scene-report/stoner-rock-in-greece-list
In the summer of 2015, several hundred stoner rock artists and fans travelled to a small festival by a lake in the northern part of Greece. And though that turned out to be the Fuzztastic Planet Festival’s final year—so far, anyway—the scene’s pulse has hardly diminished. In 2016, fans headed to the Los Almiros Festival to watch their local heroes share the stage with international acts like Truckfighters.
Heavy music has been popular in Greece for decades. In the ’90s, underground black metal bands like Athens’ Rotting Christ responded to the Nordic dominance in the genre with albums that included themes from ancient Greece. In the panic and slump that followed Greece’s economic crash in 2010, scores of young people fled the country. For some of those who chose to stay, fuzzed-out rock provides an escape from the daily routine. Radio stations like Downtuned, the self-described home of the Greek heavy underground, have become a beacon of the scene, spreading the word across the globe.
Needless to say, stoner rock has very little in common with traditional Greek music—don’t expect bouzouki, Cretan lute, or Epirus clarinet here, though a handful of bands, like Villagers of Ioannina City, have managed to merge the two sounds successfully. Most of them, though, including bands like Nightstalker and Planet of Zeus, keep the focus simple: guitar, bass, drums, and vocals. If you’re a fan of groups like Kyuss or Turbonegro, there are plenty of interesting things happening in Greece to warrant your attention.

Michael hann - The Guardian
▻https://www.theguardian.com/music/2020/oct/07/eddie-van-halen-was-the-heir-to-hendrix-electric-guitar
What set Eddie Van Halen apart from the shredders who followed – Yngwie Malmsteen, Joe Satriani and the like – was that he didn’t just play; he could write songs. Huge, glorious, memorable songs. Though he always saw himself as a hard rock player, he also knew how to write pop, and so Van Halen were never just a band for the guitar nerds. Though Van Halen albums always had some showcase for Eddie’s playing – Spanish Fly, Tora! Tora!, the opening of Mean Street, Cathedral – they were usually brief, and his soloing within songs was surprisingly to the point (across the first six VH albums, the ones with David Lee Roth, only three songs last longer than five minutes; this was not a self-indulgent band). His skills were just as often displayed in little flourishes – a guitar equivalent of a drum fill – fitted into the spaces in riffs, or between Roth’s lines. If you can make an impact in a few seconds, why bother wasting more time?

There are two kinds of music that tend to be colloquially referred to as “hardcore”—as a noun—by fans: the aggressive, unrestrained sound of #hardcore_punk and its offshoots, and the fast and furious #breakbeats and bass of #hardcore_rave. The speed and weight of hardcore dance music has always had something in common with hardcore punk: both forms appeal to relatively niche audiences because of how physically overwhelming such speedy, intense music can be.

How South Africa’s Blue Notes Helped Invent European Free Jazz | Bandcamp Daily
▻https://daily.bandcamp.com/lists/blue-notes-south-african-jazz-guide
In July of 1964, the members of the Cape Town-based band Blue Notes boarded a plane, headed for a gig at the world famous Antibes Jazz Festival in Juan-les-Pins, France. They were all leaving South Africa for the first time; most of them would never return. At the time, critics and audiences considered them the best jazz band in the country, but because the sextet was multi-racial they were hounded by the Apartheid state which made it illegal for its members to gather—much less perform—as a group. With passports secured, the escape to Antibes wasn’t just a career opportunity, it was an asylum from the institutionalized, racist nightmare of their homeland. For the history of improvised music, and for free jazz which came to embody the sound of global Black liberation, it also became much more. The legend that the Blue Notes would forge in Europe over the next quarter century—both as an ensemble and as individual players—constitutes one of the most under-appreciated legacies in jazz.

Ten Groups to Know From the Ascendant Psych and Garage Scene of Northern Mexico | Bandcamp Daily
▻https://daily.bandcamp.com/scene-report/sonoran-desert-psych-list
It’s a frigid November evening on the outskirts of Hermosillo when grunge quintet Margaritas Podridas finally hit the Posadelic stage to dole out their signature cocktail of mosh-inducing riffs and earthshaking wails. The raging group was one of the buzzier hometown acts on the 2019 Posadelic lineup—a festival, now in its fourth year, that has become a lightning rod for new garage, punk, and psych rock across the state of Sonora in Northern Mexico. While Margaritas Podridas’ loud, distorted guitar filled the chilly desert air, a quick survey of the crowd revealed an international cast of musicians from bands like Mesquite, Hooveriii, El Shirota and La Bruja de Texcoco, all mingling and kicking back ahead of their own thrilling sets.
