When disaster strikes, being able to count on accurate information can mean a world of difference for first response teams. Knowing where people live, the best ways to get in and out, as well as locations of water and other basic necessities are all of great importance to those working to save lives.

Unfortunately, vulnerable people especially those living in rural communities are more likely to live in areas not properly mapped.

The death toll from last Friday’s collapse of the Meethotamulla garbage dump in the Sri Lankan capital Colombo rose to 28 people this Monday. Rescue workers say another 30 people are still trapped under the mud and debris, though hopes are fading that any of these individuals will be found alive. The garbage collapse buried roughly 145 houses in the Colombo slum.

As Kazakhstan’s 76-year-old authoritarian President Nursultan Nazarbayev battles with his own mortality and a pronounced economic slowdown, he has become increasingly fond of making grand announcements and issuing legacy-shaping decrees.

This was evident most recently on April 12, when he ordered authorities to begin preparing for the switch from the Cyrillic alphabet to a Latin based script. The switch will begin by the year’s end and should be finalised by 2025.
