  • Bin Laden Letters? Or Lies of the US government? – As‘ad AbuKhalil

The language of the documents makes clear what we have known all along: that al-Qaeda carries a strong sectarian message against all Shias (in one document, Octavia Nasr was described as “Shia” because she was fired by MSNBC – according to the author of the document – after she described Fadlallah in “glowing” terms.)

We don’t know who authored those documents and I for one don’t take at face value any of the claims of the US government. The documents thus far contradicted US stated views about 1) links between al-Qaeda and Iran; 2) links between al-Qaeda and al-Awlaki; 3) links between al-Qaeda and al-Shabaab.

I should also say that in some cases one can raise questions about the authenticity of the letters. Specifically, why would bin Laden refer to suicide operations as “fidai operation” when all his crowd strictly refers to them as “martyrdom operations.”
