Melbourne-based studio Torus Games has effectively shut down after 30 years.

Torus was established by Australian game developer Bill McIntosh in 1994 and has worked on a number of licensed titles including World War Z: Aftermath, Cartoon Network: Battle Crashers, Spider-Man: Battle for New York, and Shrek Smash N’ Crash Racing.

Electronic Arts today announced that it is laying off approximately 5% of its employees as it leans in on the parts of the business it feels will be the most successful in the years to come.

In its most recent annual report, the publisher gave its headcount as 13,400 as of the end of March 2023, which would put the job losses around 670 people.

Within the last few years, video game industry layoffs have unfortunately become more commonplace. In 2023, we saw near-weekly layoffs across the entire industry. When the dust had settled, at least 6,000 jobs across publishers, developers, and other video game-related companies had been terminated. Sadly, it appears 2024 will outpace that, if the first few weeks of the year are any indication.

Most folks didn’t expect 2024 to be much better, but I’m not sure anyone was ready for it to be possibly worse—yet this year has kicked off with a string of big and small layoffs signaling that the corporate bloodletting rituals aren’t ending anytime soon. So Kotaku is going to try and track all of 2024’s layoffs as they happen. Hopefully, we don’t have to update this post that much.

“Ubisoft is proceeding with a collective dismissal in its Montreal establishment within the framework of a reorganization of its production support services across Canada, by consolidating these functions Canada wide, Ubisoft will be able to optimize its resources to be more sustainable in the long term,” the company wrote in a notice to the government of Quebec shared with Kotaku. Ubisoft added that some additional positions will be eliminated throughout the rest of its Canadian offices as well. 124 positions will be eliminated in total across the company.

A notice of the lawsuit was shared on Twitter yesterday by former BioWare developer Jon Renish. In its statement of facts, which were reviewed by Kotaku, an attorney for the group claims that BioWare was only willing to offer laid-off employees two weeks of severance per year of service, rather than the one month commonly awarded under other recent labor cases. The lawsuit also claims that BioWare was unwilling to include the value of health benefits in the severance package, further shortchanging the departing developers who average 14 years of service each. EA reported over $400 million in net income in August, up 23 percent from the year prior. The company bought back $325 million in stock the same month.

Legendary game designer Will Wright, who led development on not just SimCity but the original Sims as well, hasn’t really made a big video game since 2008’s Spore. He’s back in 2022, though, working on something called VOXVerse.

It’s a social game where you mine stuff, build stuff, and talk to people. And everyone is a squat little voxel-based character. There’ll also be real estate that you buy and own, and I think you can see where this is going.

Oh, and it’s also helping to sell NFTs. The game has been designed at Gallium Games, a studio focused on blockchain gaming (founded by both Wright and Carmen Sandiego co-creator Lauren Elliott), but the “Vox” characters at the heart of the project aren’t new characters, they’re an existing line of NFTs, which include licensed tie-ins from stuff like Trolls and The Walking Dead. The Vox characters are sold by crypto firm Gala Games, who have spent $25 million funding VOXVerse.

Enter This Girl Does Not Exist, a recent Steam game with simple puzzle gameplay that nonetheless signals a massive change that will soon hit the gaming industry. The developer claims that everything, from the art to the story to the music has been generated by AI of some kind. If you haven’t heard of it that’s not surprising, as the game currently only has one review on Steam, and it’s not a positive one. But the story behind the game is curious, and indicative of larger tensions that will only become more visible within the space.

The description makes the game sound more interesting and in-depth than it really is. It’s a jigsaw puzzle game with a very limited selection of about 5-6 girls that have about 5 pictures each.

The game has you select 3 of the girls, then you complete jigsaws of each in turn, after two round of pictures, you dismiss one of the three girls, then complete another 2 rounds, and dismiss the 2nd, to unlock all the pictures for the final remaining girl.

Once you’ve unlocked one of the girls and the “prompt” used to generate the pictures (the game doesn’t give any details of what benefit the prompt would be), you have to start the game again from the beginning to unlock another girl - which includes completing jigsaws for 3 girls, dismissing one again, etc. - meaning that you end up completing the same jigsaws multiple times for the girls you dismiss each time.

Earlier today, former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shockingly assassinated. Then the internet did its usual shitty thing of making bad jokes out of current events, and that eventually led to a news station in Greece misidentifying famous game developer Hideo Kojima as the assassin.

Shortly after today’s assassination, some shitty people in a dank corner of the internet joked that Abe’s suspected killer looked like Kojima. Eventually, this reached Twitter, where far-right French politician Damien Rieu—perhaps not understanding that it was a joke—retweeted images of Kojima with a comment that translates to “The extreme left kills,” helping spread it more. While Rieu did eventually delete the tweets, it seems the damage was already done and might have helped mislead at least one news station in Greece that covered the assassination.

Following recent rumors, Kotaku can confirm via its sources that Rockstar Games is currently focused on developing Grand Theft Auto 6, and has shelved all remakes following the poor reception of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition.

Yesterday, a tweet from Tez, an often reliable and trusted GTA insider, caught the attention of many Rockstar fans. According to the tweet, Red Dead Redemption and GTA IV remasters were no longer “on the table,” possibly due to the horrible mess that was last year’s GTA Trilogy remakes. While some questioned if this was true, I can confirm that Tez’s tweet is accurate and lines up with what I’ve been told.

Why would the developer shut down a remake of one of its best-selling games? The reasons are apparently two-fold. First, there’s the tumultuous release of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - Definitive Edition (a remaster of Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas). At the time, Rockstar stated that the game "did not launch in a state that meets our own standards of quality, or the standards our fans have come to expect."

Maybe more importantly, Rockstar has apparently decided to focus its development efforts on releasing Grand Theft Auto VI. Development of a Red Dead Redemption remaster would be running parallel to the making of the next Grand Theft Auto, and Rockstar appears to be prioritizing the development of the latter game.

Layoffs have afflicted Unity’s offices across the globe. Sources tell Kotaku that pretty much every corner of the company has taken some sort of hit, though there’s a concentration in the AI and engineering departments. On Blind, the anonymous messaging board commonly used by employees in the tech industry, Unity staffers say that roughly 300 or 400 people have been let go, and that layoffs are still ongoing. Kotaku’s sources have said the same.
