The Red Band Society is the same kind of fodder. Not only does it play into all of the tropes about disability and illness that many of us in the disability activism community have been attempting to eradicate, or at least educate others about, so they can help us eradicate it, but it also plays into the ” black hero(ine)” trope. This trope explores the idea that a nonwhite person, typically someone who is black, basically serves as a person who sees to the needs of the primarily white, (rest of the) cast of characters. In this case, Octavia Spencer, as the nurse to this wily group of kids, plays the hero role. We often see Denzel Washington playing these kinds of roles, where the character is desexualized, and has little else going on for them beyond serving the needs of the white folk, in the film or television show. Why do we relegate black people to take care of or do the bidding of primarily white people? It’s just not cool. I digress.

For many people with chronic illnesses, this kind of exploitation is disturbing. For me, it is a reminder of the fish bowl syndrome, many of us who spend a significant amount time at the hospital experience. With each new doctor that comes in, we are poked and prodded. We are made to perform, so the new doctor can see the most visible of our symptoms. We are in a fish bowl, on display,for the able-bodied world to see, to gawk, to stare, and to marvel in wonderment. We are not yours, to put on display. Our stories are not yours to exploit. Often, what happens, is that allows able-bodied people to ultimately feel better about themselves and their own situations, because at least they don’t have it as bad as we do, or at least that is what they think.

We need to stop our fascination with lives we think we understand. Instead of able-bodied or non-sick individuals writing what they think our experiences are, maybe they should consult with us or let us write our experiences, in our own words.

According to British newspapers Aijo was a member of an elite squad of separatist gunmen: one report spoke of his “links to high-ranking Russian political figures”. The fact that he had once worked at Heathrow airport was used to hint at the security risk such a dangerous character may have posed.

In reality Aijo, a former microbiology student at London University’s Birkbeck College, turned out to be a polite and earnest young man. He knew little of Novorossiya – the dream of a “New Russia” carved out of Ukraine – but was keen to talk about Marxist-Leninism and the ultimate triumph of the proletariat. His decision to attach himself to various campaigns had led to prison spells in Latvia, Holland and Ukraine; he was not a soldier of fortune.

Messy and disorganised conflicts attract adventurers from abroad. Some are harmless idealists like Aijo; some are fantasists; but there are also real fighters and there were certainly plenty of them drifting into Ukraine.

Private armies, funded by oligarchs, fighting for the Kiev government, have attracted hard-right recruits. The Azov Battalion is particularly popular for foreign volunteers because of its English-language social pages. Mikael Skillt, a 37-year-old former Swedish soldier, joined after his “warrior soul was awakened” by the Maidan protests against Yanukovych’s government.

Skillt, who says he is proud to be a National Socialist, was “fighting for the freedom of the Ukrainian people against Putin’s imperialist front”. His next campaign is going to be in Syria, fighting for the regime. But isn’t Putin the regime’s ally? “Yes, but Assad is standing up to international Zionism and that is of the utmost importance,” was the response.

It remains unclear if and when Skillt will make it to Syria. He was based at a disused summer school in the village Shyrokyne, outside Mariupol, when it came under heavy fire two weeks ago, forcing his unit to retreat, abandoning weapons.

The attack was carried out by an artillery unit manned by Russians to the north-east who were in Ukraine, they said, “on holiday”.

Ever since serious protest broke out in Ukraine in February the Western mainstream media, particularly in the United States, has seriously downplayed the fact that the usual suspects – the US/European Union/NATO triumvirate – have been on the same side as the neo-Nazis. In the US it’s been virtually unmentionable. I’m sure that a poll taken in the United States on this issue would reveal near universal ignorance of the numerous neo-Nazi actions, including publicly calling for death to “Russians, Communists and Jews”. But in the past week the dirty little secret has somehow poked its head out from behind the curtain a bit.

On September 9 NBCnews.com reported that “German TV shows Nazi symbols on helmets of Ukraine soldiers”. The German station showed pictures of a soldier wearing a combat helmet with the “SS runes” of Hitler’s infamous black-uniformed elite corps. (Runes are the letters of an alphabet used by ancient Germanic peoples.) A second soldier was shown with a swastika on his helmet.

On the 13th, the Washington Post showed a photo of the sleeping quarter of a member of the Azov Battalion, one of the Ukrainian paramilitary units fighting the pro-Russian separatists. On the wall above the bed is a large swastika. Not to worry, the Post quoted the platoon leader stating that the soldiers embrace symbols and espouse extremist notions as part of some kind of “romantic” idea.

Contrairement à toutes les annonces tonitruantes quant à la destruction de l’appareil malaisien par un missile sol-air BUK prétendument utilisé par les séparatistes ou/et par les russes, le gouvernement fédéral affirme n’être en possession d’aucune preuve sur l’utilisation de missiles sol-air, le jour de l’accident, ni où a eu lieu la destruction de l’appareil.

Alexander Neu, un député de Die Linke, a déclaré : « Le gouvernement fédéral ne dispose d’aucune information quant à savoir si le MH17 a été abattu au-dessus de l’Ukraine, et en particulier par quelle partie il a été abattu."

La réponse du gouvernement allemand précise également que deux avions de reconnaissance AWACS de l’OTAN ont bien suivi le vol du MH17 mais ils n’ont pas détectés les 30 dernières minutes du vol avant l’accident, mais par contre, ils ont recueilli des signaux d’un système de missile anti-aérien, et un autre signal radar inconnu.

Le mémorandum du gouvernement allemand précise que le système de défense aérienne AWACS a classé les signaux radars comme faisant parti du système des missiles anti-aériens S-125 "Petchora" (OTAN - SA-3)​​. C’est un vieux complexe soviétique, qui a été retiré du service et remplacé par le S-300. Cependant, il est toujours en usage dans les armées de l’ex-Union soviétique, dont l’Ukraine.

Le système antimissile S-125 peut envoyer des missiles avec des charges militaires de 70 kg dont 33 kg d’explosifs et 4 500 fragments d’acier. Les ukrainiens disposent de ce type d’armement.

Cela signifie concrètement que l’OTAN sait parfaitement que le système radar de ciblage des missiles BUK n’a pas été activé, mais par contre qu’un système de ciblage radar des missiles S-125 a bien été activé. Les systèmes Awacs ne peuvent pas confondre les deux systèmes.

The United States and European nations have imposed severe economic sanctions on Iran in recent years accusing it of using nuclear program as a coverage for making nuclear weapons. However, Iran has denied the charges and insists that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.
The Court of Justice lifted the sanctions because of lack of evidence on banks involvement in the financing of any programs to develop nuclear weapons.

Dans son raisonnement, il étend aux personnes morales et obligations étatiques la protection des droits fondamentaux (dont l’obligation de motivation des condamnations) garanties par les droits de l’homme.

Ce jugement fait suite à deux autres jugements concernant une autre banque iranienne sanctionnée (la banque Mellat, ou Banque nationale d’Iran) allant dans le même sens : annulation des sanctions pour absence de preuves, les faits rapportés n’étant pas prouvés mais étant de simples allégations.

Bank Mellat intends to sue for damages.

A related action in the British courts was taken to the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom in March 2013, causing the court to hold a closed hearing for the first time. In June 2013, the Supreme Court ruled that the UK government’s sanctions on the bank had been unlawful. Bank Mellat intends to claim for £500 million of damages from the UK government for loss of business between 2009 and 2013.

Ce tweet marrant signalé par @fil qui remarque que les gens réagissent aux représentations cartographiques ("there is no such thing as an innocent map...". Ici il manque la frontière entre le Sahara occidental et le Maroc, frontière pourtant reconnue par l’ONU. Pourtant ce n’est pas du tout le sujet du tweet (qui annonce le projet de plateforme de transparence des aides françaises en Afrique).

Le ministère des affaires étrangères a donc effacé la frontière entre le Sahara occidental et le Maroc - sans doute pour ne pas froisser l’administration marocaine très chatouilleuse sur la question - Mais a figuré la nouvelle frontière du Sud Soudan de 2011 (alors que le du Sahara occidental est administré par le Maroc depuis le milieu des années 1970 !) et se paye même le luxe de représenter les limites de région disputée d’Abyei.

le MAF ne pourra pas dire, pour sa défense qu’il a « oublié » de représenter la frontière « disputée » entre le Sahara occidental (en attente de son référundum d’autodétermination depuis presque 40 ans) et le Maroc...

De toutes façons, faire semblant d’oublier la frontière du Sahara est un grand classique chez les éditeurs scolaires français qui vendent des livres au Maroc. Pour ne pas risquer la censure, ils l’effacent systématiquement de toutes les cartes où elle est présente !

Je ne parle même pas des journaux, c’est pire :) Il m’est arrivé de me plaindre à haute voix quand la frontière disparaissait de mes cartes. Une fois, on m’a répondu :

The People’s Front Party headed by Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk and parliamentary speaker Oleksandr Turchynov is expected to include the names of several military commanders and prominent EuroMaidan activist Tetiana Chornovol.

At the party congress held on Sept. 10 Chornovol was chosen as a member of the party’s Coordination Council along with prominent military blogger Dmytro Tymchuk. 

Since soldiers are banned from being members of political parties the People’s Front formed a special party Military Council to get around the restriction that includes commanders of six volunteer battalions, including Andriy Biletsky from Azov and Yury Bereza from Dnipro 1 and also Sergiy Sydorin, commander of special brigade of National Guard. Many of these people are also likely to appear on the party list. 

Party Union Samopomich led by Lviv mayor Andriy Sadovy will reinforce its list with Semen Semenchenko, head of Donbas battalion, in the second spot on the list after a decision made at the party’s conference on Sept. 12.

Récemment, une étude a fait le tour de la presse internationale (Guardian, New York Times, Rue89...) et j’étais un peu énervé de la synthèse qui en était faite, qui semblait un nouveau pavé dans la mare du sempiternel débat autour de l’électronique et du papier... En fait, le constat qu’on mémorise moins bien au format numérique qu’au format papier me semble si éloigné de la réalité des pratiques et des constats des experts ("Quand on observe de près les effets des écrans sur le cerveau, on constate que le support informatique ne change pas grand-chose à la lecture" dit Stanislas Dehaene), que j’ai voulu en savoir plus.

The video was shot last week in Ukraine by a camera team from Norwegian broadcaster TV2. “We were filming a report about Ukraine’s AZOV battalion in the eastern city of Urzuf, when we came across these soldiers,” Oysten Bogen, a correspondent for the private television station, told NBC News. Minutes before the images were taped, Bogen said he had asked a spokesperson whether the battalion had fascist tendencies. “The reply was: absolutely not, we are just Ukrainian nationalists,” Bogen said.

Wikipedia nous raconte une histoire qui a l’air de tenir debout, on y trouve même une citation de Trotsky qui semble la confirmer. Pourtant avec un petit effort on trouve une source fiable récente qui n’a aucun intérêt à disculper Lénine et les autres dirigeants bolchéviques de 1918.

Historians and archivists have found no evidence that the Bolshevik leader or regional chief Yakov Sverdlov gave permission for the family to be shot in 1918, Vladimir Solovyov, Russia’s chief investigator, told the Izvestia newspaper.

“The top experts in this subject took part in the investigation, historians and archivists. And I can say with full confidence that today there is no reliable document proving the instigation of Lenin or Sverdlov” in carrying out the killings, he said.

Russia has now closed a criminal probe aimed at naming those guilty for the murders, Mr Solovyov said.

Solovyov donne mêne une explication pour l’affirmation de Trotsky.

“When they heard that the whole family had been shot, they officially approved the shooting. None of the organisers nor the participants suffered any punishment,” he said.
