Daily Kos: Ron Paul’s racist newsletters aren’t going away

“You can run but you can’t hide” has to be taking on a whole new meaning for Ron Paul, as the latest Republican flavor-of-the-week learns that the racist newsletters published under his name in the 1990’s aren’t going away.

Last week, Paul walked out during an interview with CNN’s Gloria Borger after being asked about the newsletters, saying “I didn’t write them, I disavow them, That’s it.” Uh huh.

From an archive search by the Huffington Post, a few excerpts from newspapers articles, circa 1996:

Dr. Paul denied suggestions that he was a racist and said he was not evoking stereotypes when he wrote the columns. He said they should be read and quoted in their entirety to avoid misrepresentation. [...]

In the interview, he did not deny he made the statement about the swiftness of black men.

“If you try to catch someone that has stolen a purse from you, there is no chance to catch them,” Dr. Paul said.

This would be the definition of “disgruntled former staffer,” and damning with faint praise. Eric Dondero, a former Ron Paul congressional aide and presidential campaign staffer writes to set the record straight on his former boss, who isn’t an anti-Semite, but.... And who isn’t homophobic, but....

Is Ron Paul an Anti-Semite? Absolutely No. As a Jew, (half on my mother’s side), I can categorically say that I never heard anything out of his mouth, in hundreds of speeches I listened too over the years, or in my personal presence that could be called, “Anti-Semite.” No slurs. No derogatory remarks.

He is however, most certainly Anti-Israel, and Anti-Israeli in general. He wishes the Israeli state did not exist at all. He expressed this to me numerous times in our private conversations. His view is that Israel is more trouble than it is worth, specifically to the America taxpayer. He sides with the Palestinians, and supports their calls for the abolishment of the Jewish state, and the return of Israel, all of it, to the Arabs.

Again, American Jews, Ron Paul has no problem with.

The larger question being ignored in the Newt didn’t qualify for the Va primary story is the OBVIOUS MASSIVE Voter Fraud that went into his failed effort. The process to qualify for the Va. Primary run off is to secure merely 10,000 signatures of registered Va voters .

It does not seem inconceivable that a candidate with a LONG history of “ethical lapses” would resort to such tactics.

It has been reported that Newt submitted roughly 11,000 plus signatures and the election officials were unable to confirm at least 10,000 of these were valid qualifying voters (we don’t yet know how many actual signatures were determined to be valid or false).

That means at a minimum that 9 to 10% of the signatures Newt’s proxies gathered were non-qualifying or fraudulent

The days I spent at the Occupy Wall Street action in the park were harrowing to say the least. The racism is rampant. There is no regard for the need to factor in black issues or empowerment nor is black leadership in actuality encouraged or welcome, even though they claim it is. There are many white men there are very domineering, controlling, demeaning, sarcastic, condescending and do not make black women feel safe, welcome, empowered, appreciated or protected. They have no regard for black people or women.

Women are being molested in the park and there is no real viable system in place to handle it without the need for police intervention. There are white supremacists groups running around there. There are people smoking drugs there even though it puts the entire action at risk and even after being told that the General Assembly had consensus on the fact that there should be no smoking of cigarettes as they are not only a health hazard to everyone and gives support to the tobacco companies, but also a potential fire hazard, people continue to smoke with no regard for their fellow protesters.

In a tense battle of wills, state troopers and Albany police held off making arrests of dozens of protesters near the Capitol over the weekend even as Albany’s mayor, under pressure from Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s administration, had urged his police chief to enforce a city curfew.

“We were ready to make arrests if needed, but these people complied with our orders,” a State Police official said. However, he added that State Police supported the defiant posture of Albany police leaders to hold off making arrests for the low-level offense of trespassing, in part because of concern it could incite a riot or draw thousands of protesters in a backlash that could endanger police and the public.

“We don’t have those resources, and these people were not causing trouble,” the official said. “The bottom line is the police know policing, not the governor and not the mayor.”

A city police source said his department also was reluctant to damage what he considers to be good community relations that have taken years to rebuild. In addition, the crowd included elderly people and many others who brought their children with them.

“There was a lot of discussion about how it would look if we started pulling people away from their kids and arresting them ... and then what do we do with the children?” one officer said.

Joshua Vlasto, a spokesman for Cuomo, did not respond directly to questions about contact between Cuomo’s secretary, Larry Schwartz, and Jennings. “The state is working collaboratively with the city to enforce the curfew,” Vlasto said in a statement Friday evening.

Apparently spurred by the shoutdown delivered by Marine Veteran Sgt Shamar Thomas to NYPD officers in Times Square, more military Occupy groups have been started. The Veracity of the these organizations may be questionable at this moment, but what can’t be questioned is the growth of the Occupy Movement, and its ability to attract Military Veterans, Active duty as well as retired and current Police Officers.

Five years of a pure neo-liberal regime had made Iceland, (population 320 thousand, no army), one of the richest countries in the world. In 2003 all the country’s banks were privatized, and in an effort to attract foreign investors, they offered on-line banking whose minimal costs allowed them to offer relatively high rates of return. The accounts, called IceSave, attracted many English and Dutch small investors. But as investments grew, so did the banks’ foreign debt. In 2003 Iceland’s debt was equal to 200 times its GNP, but in 2007, it was 900 percent. The 2008 world financial crisis was the coup de grace. The three main Icelandic banks, Landbanki, Kapthing and Glitnir, went belly up and were nationalized, while the Kroner lost 85% of its value with respect to the Euro. At the end of the year Iceland declared bankruptcy.

In her Human Events column today, Coulter writes that a “few well-placed rifle rounds” would end the rioting in the United Kingdom. She then added that a “more sustained attack on the rampaging mob might save England from itself” because it would “remov[e]” more people from the welfare rolls:

A few well-placed rifle rounds, and the rioting would end in an instant. A more sustained attack on the rampaging mob might save England from itself, finally removing shaved-head, drunken parasites from the benefits rolls that Britain can’t find the will to abolish on moral or utilitarian grounds. We can be sure there’s no danger of killing off the next Winston Churchill or Edmund Burke in these crowds.

But for a defense contractor with ties to the federal government, Hunton & Williams, DOD, NSA, and the CIA - whose enemies are labor unions, progressive organizations, journalists, and progressive bloggers, a persona apparently goes far beyond creating a mere sockpuppet.

According to an embedded MS Word document found in one of the HB Gary emails, it involves creating an army of sockpuppets, with sophisticated “persona management” software that allows a small team of only a few people to appear to be many, while keeping the personas from accidentally cross-contaminating each other. Then, to top it off, the team can actually automate some functions so one persona can appear to be an entire Brooks Brothers riot online.
