Turkey had for nearly six years supplied and pampered al-Qaeda in Syria. The group has many relations and personal within Turkey. The Astana agreement now obligates Turkey to fight HTS. Erdogan sits in a trap he set up himself. Should it come to a conflict between HTS and Turkish forces in Syria, the fight would soon cause casualties in Ankara and Istanbul.

The Turkish incursion into the province dominated by the jihadist group Tahrir al Sham, whose backbone is ex-Nusra Front, Syria’s former al Qaeda offshoot, has run smoothly.

Rebel sources familiar with the deployment said the operation was preceded by weeks of coordination between Tahrir al Sham with Turkish intelligence officers to ensure no clashes happened.

Free Syrian Army rebel groups said the goal of the campaign was to push deeper into the province, with the expansion of supply lines and observation posts. The jihadists would be retreating further south in a phased withdrawal.

Après s’être résignés à escorter les militaires à l’intérieur de leur fief, et les avoir laissés ériger des postes d’observation, les miliciens extrémistes ont consenti à leur céder plusieurs de leurs bases. D’après Basel Al-Junaïdi, un analyste proche de l’opposition syrienne, l’armée turque aurait déjà pris possession d’au moins deux sites, occupés jusque-là par HTS, dont l’aérodrome militaire de Taftanaz, à l’est d’Idlib. Deux autres bases des djihadistes devraient être investies dans les prochains jours par les forces d’Ankara.
