Israel has not sought war since its creation in 1948, the president insisted.
“We are peace seekers. We went to peace with our neighbours time and time again. Unfortunately, it all started on the 7th of October when a proxy of Iran, Hamas, led an unbelievably brutal massacre against Israeli citizens and the rest is history. We know it. So we should put it in perspective.”

’The NHS sold out its staff’: Doctors whose lives were devastated by long COVID to sue health service | UK News | Sky News
▻https://news.sky.com/story/the-nhs-sold-out-its-staff-doctors-whose-lives-were-devastated-by-long-cov
A British Medical Association study of 600 doctors with long COVID last year revealed that 60% had suffered persistent ill health since contracting COVID, and around half (48%) had lost earnings.
Dr Fearnley co-founded Long COVID Doctors for Action (LCD4A), which is today pledging legal action against the NHS for negligent workplace exposure to coronavirus, resulting in injury and financial loss.
The group, which is being represented by the legal firm Bond Turner, claims the NHS decided to downgrade guidance as the virus took hold in March 2020, only requiring staff to wear blue surgical face masks, plastic aprons, and gloves when dealing with suspected or confirmed COVID cases.
This is in line with World Health Organisation (WHO) guidance, which says there is only strong evidence for more restrictive masks such as FFP3s, FFP2s, and N95s, being worn for “aerosol-generating procedures” - not general care of COVID patients.

Israel-Hamas war: What social media videos and satellite images tell us about the number of dead in Gaza | World News | Sky News
▻https://news.sky.com/story/israel-hamas-war-how-many-people-have-died-in-gaza-12998755
Sustained airstrikes, communications blackouts and a lack of access for foreign press has made it difficult to verify the number of people killed during the war in Gaza.
Mass casualty airstrikes in Gaza have captured headlines around the world, but doubt has been cast on the reliability of fatality figures in the warzone.
Confusion is common in the immediate aftermath of attacks in any conflict, but even Gaza’s official count of the number killed, based on hospital administrative data, has come under scrutiny.
Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry says 9,061 people have been killed since 7 October, two-thirds of them women and children.
Last week, an Israeli military spokesman said the ministry “continuously inflates the number of civilian casualties”. That concern was echoed by US President Joe Biden, who said he has “no confidence” in the figures.
Israel’s fatality figures have not attracted the same scepticism. The Israeli military says that “over 1,400” people were killed by Hamas on 7 October, with police estimating that 1,033 were civilians. A further 20 Israeli soldiers have been killed during ground operations in Gaza, according to the Associated Press.

Satellite imagery shows graveyards expanding
Social media videos and satellite imagery have become crucial resources in allowing outside observers to verify individual incidents, as well as to show the scale of the killing.
Footage posted online, for instance, shows the rapid expansion of cemeteries in Gaza, where dozens of new, makeshift graves have been dug.

’There’s nothing that would lead us to distrust the numbers’
In the meantime, outside observers are likely to continue relying on Gaza’s ministry of health for an overall picture of the number of fatalities.“The ministry of health in Gaza has historically been fairly reliable,” [Emily] Tripp[, director of Airwars, an organisation specialising in the verification of airstrike casualties] says.
“They know the number of people in hospitals, they’ve got the infrastructure, they’ve got the data.”
In recent Gaza wars, figures published by the ministry of health during the fighting have ended up being broadly in line with those later produced by the UN and Israel Defence Forces.
[…]
The real number could be higher
Mr Root told Sky News that the numbers reported by the ministry seemed plausible given Gaza’s high population density and the scale of destruction visible in satellite imagery.Sky News has also looked at the number of deaths among UN staff, which Mr Root says serves as a “good gut check” on the figures.
The UN says that 72 of its staff in Gaza have been killed, approximately 0.58% of the total.
That’s slightly higher than the death rate for all Gaza residents reported by the ministry of health, which stands at 0.41%.
People urged by Bank of England economist to ’accept’ being poorer | Business News | Sky News
▻https://news.sky.com/story/bank-of-england-rate-setter-urges-people-to-accept-they-are-poorer-in-figh
The Bank of England’s chief economist has urged people to accept they are poorer, warning inflation risks remaining stubbornly high.
Huw Pill told a podcast that people and businesses have responded to higher bills and costs by asking for higher wages or charging their customers more money.
His remarks echoed warnings from Bank governor Andrew Bailey that large wage and further cost increases damage the Bank’s efforts to cool inflation.
The headline measure, the consumer prices index (CPI), remains above 10% despite consecutive interest rate increases since December 2021 to help cool demand, and therefore the pace of price growth in the economy.
While much of the inflation can be attributed to factors outside the Bank’s control, such as energy and food costs, it is worried about the ability of secondary effects, such as wage increases, making its job more difficult.
Its argument has consistently been dismissed by unions seeking pay deals to help cushion their members from the cost of living crisis.
Inflation is due to ease naturally, and sharply in the coming months, when the effects of the first big energy bill hikes are stripped out of the inflation data.

France asks Frontex to guard Europe’s northern coastline too
French Interior Minister Gerald #Darmanin said he has asked the European Union border agency Frontex not to neglect Europe’s northern coastline in the fight against illegal immigration.
“I myself have contacted Frontex, which is predominantly taking care of southern Europe, and asked them to deal with northern Europe, too, particularly the coastline of Nord-Pas-de-Calais,” he told reporters on Saturday during a visit to the port of Calais in northern France, a point from which many migrants try to cross the Channel to reach Britain.
“Sixty percent of migrants who come here, come via Belgium. So, our spectrum must be very wide. We need European air surveillance,” Darmanin said.
Since the end of 2018, an increasing number of migrants have tried to cross the Channel to Britain, defying warnings from the authorities of the dangers of such a journey, given the high density of traffic, the strong sea currents and the cold temperatures.
Darmanin welcomed a deal reached last week by France and Britain, under which London has pledged just under 63 million euros in 2021-2022 to help France stem the flow of illegal migrants crossing the Channel.
France has promised to beef up security forces along the coast.
“We already have more than 5,000 police officers and gendarmes in Pas-de-Calais, a large number of whom are involved in the fight again immigration. We will increase these numbers,” Darmanin said.
On Sunday, eighty migrants, including 20 children, were rescued as they tried to reach England in two separate boats, French authorities said.
Rescue services were first contacted “by a boat of migrants reporting difficulties”, then by a merchant ship which informed them “of another boat of migrants adrift to the north of Calais”, the Channel maritime prefecture said in a statement.
A patrol boat was then sent to the scene which rescued 80 people from the two boats.
In total, “80 shipwrecked people (42 men, 18 women, including one pregnant woman, and 20 children) were brought to the port of Calais. They are all safe and sound”.
French gendarmes also discovered 52 migrants early Sunday morning on a beach in Dannes, also in the north of the country. They had returned to land after an “engine failure” of their boat, the prefecture of Pas-de-Calais told the news agency AFP.
Last year, more than 9,500 crossings or attempted crossings were recorded, four times as many as in 2019, according to the French authorities.
Out of these, six people died and three were reported missing last year, compared with four deaths in 2019.

Covid-19 : pourquoi le Royaume-Uni connaît-il une chute brutale du nombre de cas ? - Monde - Le Télégramme
▻https://www.letelegramme.fr/monde/covid-19-pourquoi-le-royaume-uni-connait-il-une-chute-brutale-du-nombre

Why #COVID cases are now falling in the UK – and what could happen next
▻https://theconversation.com/why-covid-cases-are-now-falling-in-the-uk-and-what-could-happen-nex
The real world, though, is rather more complex than a #SIR model. It behaves more like a #SEIRS model, a variation of the basic SIR model that incorporates other factors into calculating how the disease spreads.
In a SEIRS model, the rise and fall of case numbers and the point of endemic equilibrium depend on a range of influences. These include measures such as “beta” (which is the average number of contacts a person has over a set amount of time, multiplied by the probability of the disease being transmitted when there’s contact between a susceptible and an infectious person) and “latency” (which is the lag between someone being infected and becoming infectious). Critically, the model also factors in the changing immunity of the population, either through births and deaths or, as we have already discussed, waning immunity.
As in the SIR model, the rate of epidemic growth slows to a peak before cases fall back to an endemic level. But in this SEIRS model, the infection approaches its stable endemic equilibrium in a series of epidemic waves, as the model’s extra data inputs make it much more sensitive and complicated (and as a result more realistic).
For example, if beta increases because contact between people increases, then this will change the endemic equilibrium at which cases level off. More contact will see a surge in infections until they start to settle around a higher equilibrium. Similarly, if beta decreases we’ll see a drop in infections until the new equilibrium is approached.
COVID-19: UK’s daily coronavirus data ’looks a bit fishy’ - as major symptom study suggests cases on the rise
▻https://news.sky.com/story/covid-19-uks-daily-coronavirus-data-looks-a-bit-fishy-as-major-symptom-stu
Professor Tim Spector, who co-founded the ZOE COVID Symptom Study app, said a “sudden drop” in people testing positive for the virus in the government’s data is “very suspicious”.
[…]
"To me, it looks a bit fishy.
“It looks as if there’s some other explanation for this other than suddenly the virus has given up.”
He added that the ZOE study shows cases are on the rise and the “dramatic drop” in government figures is one “which we haven’t seen before, even in the other waves and lockdowns”.
[…]
One of the possible explanations behind the decline in cases, according to the professor, are fewer young people getting tested.
He said: "Looking at our own data, there’s a suggestion that we are seeing a reduction in the cases of the young and so they have been largely driving these figures for the last month or so, and that could be that less young people are getting tested.
[…]
People not getting tested due to concerns over the “pingdemic” and not wanting to self-isolate is also a “potential phenomenon that’s upsetting” the data, adds the professor.

People who have recovered from COVID-19 are more likely to score lower on intelligence tests, new research has found.
Scientists tested 81,337 people between January and December last year as part of the Great British Intelligence Test, including almost 13,000 who had been infected with the virus.
Those who had been on ventilators saw the biggest deficit - equivalent to a seven-point drop.
▻https://www.lavoixdunord.fr/912086/article/2020-12-23/pres-de-3000-poids-lourds-bloques-dans-le-kent-deux-ou-trois-jours-pour

Tensions rising as Manston airport site reaches freight holding capacity – The Isle Of Thanet News
▻https://theisleofthanetnews.com/2020/12/23/tensions-rising-as-manston-airport-site-reaches-capacity
Tensions are rising as freight drivers arrive at Manston in a bid to receive a lateral flow covid test but are being redirected to Operation Brock – a contraflow road layout on the M20 London-bound carriageway between junctions 9 and 8- because the airfield site is now full.
Proof of a negative test is needed before drivers can travel into France.
Those on the M20 will be tested in situ. Testing will be supported by the military.
Euro Tunnel has issued a message saying: “Operation Brock is in place on the M20 where tests for all drivers are being carried out by British Health authorities. Drivers tested negative can then reach our terminal. Positive ones will be looked after by British authorities. If positive is confirmed after a second PCR test, they will have to isolate for 10 days in the UK where accommodation will be provided. Customers who arrive on our terminal without a negative test will be refused carriage.”
Unrest has also broken out among those already parked at the site with perimeter fencing broken down earlier today and protesting drivers bringing A299 traffic to a standstill.
One Kent Police car is also reported to have sustained damage during the disturbance. Police say no arrests have been made but enquires will take place to identify those responsible.
The Manston airport holding site, which has been in use since Sunday night, is at capacity with 3,800 trucks and tempers are flaring.
Freight is currently parked there due to the closure of the UK-French border on Sunday night. The border reopened from midnight last night but drivers need a negative lateral flow covid test result before they can travel.
Rail, air and sea services resumed this morning (December 23), with all people travelling from the UK into France required to show proof of the negative test taken within the previous 72 hours.

So little is known of the virus that any long-term planning is guess work.
Doctors believe that even the youngest and mildest infected are at risk of their lives being changed forever, and it could take years to become apparent. Whole workforces could become less productive as a consequence.
The advice from Italy is simple: Don’t get infected.

Abattoir outbreak triggers surge in German coronavirus infections
The high level of infections among workers at the slaughterhouse, which has been closed for two weeks, was the main factor pushing up Germany’s coronavirus reproduction rate — or R-rate — to 2.88 on Sunday, from 1.06 on Friday.

Labour party officials opposed to Jeremy #Corbyn worked to lose the 2017 general election in the hope that a bad result would trigger a leadership contest to oust him, a dossier drawn up by the party suggests.
A huge cache of leaked WhatsApp messages and emails show senior officials from the party’s right wing, who worked at its HQ, became despondent as Labour climbed in the polls during the election campaign despite their efforts.

The 860-page report, seen by Sky News, concluded factional hostility towards former leader Jeremy Corbyn amongst ex-senior officials contributed to “a litany of mistakes” that hindered the effective handling of antisemitism allegations.
The investigation, which was completed in the last month of Mr Corbyn’s leadership, claimed to have found “no evidence” of antisemitism complaints being treated differently to other forms of complaint, or of current or former staff being “motivated by antisemitic intent”.

81% of ’suspects’ flagged by Met’s police facial recognition technology innocent, independent report says | Science & Tech News | Sky News
▻https://news.sky.com/story/met-polices-facial-recognition-tech-has-81-error-rate-independent-report-s
Four out of five people identified by the Metropolitan Police’s facial recognition technology as possible suspects are innocent, according to an independent report. Researchers found that the controversial system is 81% inaccurate - meaning that, in the vast majority of cases, it flagged up faces to police when they were not on a wanted list. The force maintains its technology only makes a mistake in one in 1,000 cases - but it uses a different measurement to arrive at this conclusion. (...)
#MetropolitanPolice #algorithme #CCTV #biométrie #facial #reconnaissance #surveillance #vidéo-surveillance #bug (...)
##Liberty
The first independent evaluation of the scheme was commissioned by Scotland Yard and conducted by academics from the University of Essex.
Professor Pete Fussey and Dr Daragh Murray evaluated the technology’s accuracy at six of the 10 police trials. They found that, of 42 matches, only eight were verified as correct - an error rate of 81%. Four of the 42 were people who were never found because they were absorbed into the crowd, so a match could not be verified.
The Met prefers to measure accuracy by comparing successful and unsuccessful matches with the total number of faces processed by the facial recognition system. According to this metric, the error rate was just 0.1%.
• 8 appariements corrects

Across the six test deployments MPS officers engaged with 22 individuals as a direct result of a computer generated match judged to be credible by a human operator.238 14 of these (63.64%) were verified incorrect matches, eight were verified correct matches (36.36%). These figures do not take into account the overall number of alerts/matches generated by the LFR system as these are impossible to verify.

Women may have to quit jobs to fill care roles #post-Brexit, report warns
A dossier drawn up by ministers says they may have to plug a gap in EU care workers, but critics slam it as “remarkable misogyny”.
Women may have to give up work to look after elderly relatives unless EU care workers are given priority after Brexit, it has been reported.
The Daily Telegraph says that is the assessment made in a 37-page dossier drawn up by ministers on the impact of Britain leaving the EU.
The document allegedly warns that growing numbers of people, “especially women”, could be forced to quit their jobs to give “informal care” to parents and grandparents.
Under the “worst case scenario”, women living in Britain would likely plug the hole of 6,000 fewer doctors, 12,000 fewer nurses and 28,000 fewer care staff within five years.
This is because “greater numbers undertake informal care”, the report says.
It warns: "Considering rising life expectancy, population structural changes as well as increases in the number of people living with one or more long-term conditions, there are significant demand implications for the health and social care workforce.
"Unless we ensure such demand is met, there is a wider risk to labour market participation more generally, especially when considering increasing social care needs.
“If we fail to meet social care needs adequately we are likely to see a decrease in labour market participation levels, especially among women, as greater numbers undertake informal care.”

So now that migrant care workers might not be coming to the UK after Brexit, shouldn’t we see thousands of British women finally working as carers? Yes, sure, but for free! And after they give up their paid jobs apparently. The bullshit of migrants as economic threat here in full display! »
