This month marks the two-year anniversary of the ignominious EU-Turkey deal. Although rebranded and formalised as a “Statement”, in part to avoid the parliamentary and judicial scrutiny that an international agreement entails, at its heart there is a deal, an agreement for the mutual benefit of the two parties.

Two years into the EU-Turkey ‘deal’ – taking stock

Two years have passed since the EU and Turkey sealed a ‘deal’ to halt large-scale migration to Europe. As numbers remained low, the public eye tended to turn to other theatres. New developments, however, call for a fresh look at the ‘EU-Turkey deal’, from controversies about the accession process to Ankara’s military involvement in Syria. This blog post takes stock of the costly failure of the refugees swapping mechanism and the success of the aid package, and analyses perspectives for progress concerning the EU-Turkey Statement’s unfulfilled promises: a reform of the Customs Union, visa liberalisation and large-scale resettlement. In total, the practical result looks quite traditional: EU cash in return for border control.

EU-Turkey deal: the burden on refugees in Greece

The statistic success of the EU-Turkey deal in lowering the influx of migrants to Greece also has another face, a far-reaching “crisis of solidarity”: desperate conditions for people blocked in camps on the Egean islands; what has been described as “a mental health emergency”; and the opening or reopening of more dangerous routes.
