#Eyal_Weizman on understanding politics through #architecture, settlements and refuseniks
"We need to remember that some of the most beautiful pieces of architecture, that we all love and we all travel to see, have been military fortifications and sites of battles and execution, or beautiful castles that had a repressive social, political and military use. Architecture cannot be “tainted” by its use, because its use is part of what it is, what it does. Architecture has always been a means to create hierarchies in space to produce and represent inequality, and to exercise control."

Exclusive Interview with Khaled Meshaal, the Head of the Hamas Political Bureau
▻http://www.middleeastmonitor.com/resources/interviews/15120-exclusive-interview-with-khaled-meshaal-the-head-of-the-ham
’It is the occupation, not Hamas recognition of Israel, which is the core problem’
It is rather unnerving to come face to face with a man regarded by many people in the West as the leader of a terrorist organisation, and by possibly more people elsewhere in the world as the head of a legitimate resistance movement. It might, I suppose, have been the same for journalists meeting the late Nelson Mandela when politicians in Britain and America, for example, called him a terrorist who “should be shot” (according to Teddy Taylor, a British MP, in the mid-80s) while to most others he was a freedom fighter to be admired and supported.
Is the switch from sinner to saint going to be the same for the head of the Hamas political bureau, Khaled Meshaal? Time will tell, but seeing that the Islamic Resistance Movement was described just last week in Britain’s unelected second chamber by hereditary peer Viscount Slim as “one of the nastiest and most vicious terrorist organisations in the world”, it seems that there is a lot of ground to make up. Convincing people like John Slim that resistance against Israel’s occupation of Palestinian “by any means available” is not only a legal right for the people under occupation but also, according to Meshaal, a “duty”, is likely to be an uphill struggle. Struggle, though, is what Palestinians have been born into for almost 100 years.

62% of British public says Israel committing war crimes, as polls show sympathy for Palestinians

[File photo]Almost two thirds of the British public (62%) believe that the Israeli government is committing war crimes, a new YouGov poll has revealed.
The survey, conducted 27-28 July, comes days after a separate poll carried out on behalf of The Sunday Times showed that 52% of the British public sees Israel’s bombing of the Gaza Strip as “unjustified”. Questioned about their attitude to the conflict more generally, 27% said their sympathies lie more with the Palestinians, while 14% said their sympathies lay more with the Israelis.
Polling data from the U.S. indicates Israel’s growing image problem, even amongst the citizens of its closest ally. A new Pew Research Center poll shows that among 18 to 29-year old Americans, 29% blame Israel more for the current violence, while 21% blame Hamas. Meanwhile, a Gallup poll last week showed that a majority of nonwhite Americans under-50 view Israel’s assault as “unjustified”.
In a CNN poll conducted July 18-20, only 57% of respondents said Israel’s actions in ’Operation Protective Edge’ are justified.
Meanwhile, a survey of UK Christians commissioned by charity Embrace the Middle East has revealed that 35.4% sympathise more with the Palestinians, while 16.9% sympathise more with Israel. The research was conducted before Israel’s attack on Gaza, which charity head Jeremy Moodey said would likely only increase support for the Palestinians in UK churches.
One Palestinian child has been killed by Israel every 3 days for the past 13 years (4 juin 2013)
Official statistics from the Ministry of Information in Ramallah have revealed that 1,518 Palestinian children were killed by Israel’s occupation forces from the outbreak of the second Intifada in September 2000 up to April 2013. That’s the equivalent of one Palestinian child killed by Israel every 3 days for almost 13 years. The ministry added that the number of children injured by the Israelis since the start of the Second Intifada against Israel’s occupation has now reached 6,000.
Latest UN figures on the increase in fatalities and injuries caused by Israeli Security Force
▻http://www.middleeastmonitor.com/news/middle-east/11616-latest-un-figues-on-the-increase-in-fatalities-and-injuries
In 2013 there were 17 Palestine refugee killed by Israeli Security Forces in the West Bank. There were no refugee fatalities in 2012. Furthermore, UNRWA recorded 486 refugees injured in camps in 2013, compared with 38 in 2012. While there were no refugees injured by live ammunition in 2012, UNRWA documented 51 injuries of refugees by live ammunition in 2013, all of which occurred in or around camps.
Unfortunately UNRWA has observed a continuation of these trends into 2014. To date there have been seven Palestine refugees killed by Israeli security forces in the West Bank, two of whom were children, with the most recent being on 15 May 2014 (Nakba Day). The numbers of refugees injured in camps has continued to increase with 275 refugees injured in camps in the first four months of 2014, almost a 20 per cent increase over the same period of 2013.
Similarly, this year #UNRWA has also observed a sharp increase in refugees injured by live ammunition with at least 43 refugees being injured to date, all but one occurring in or around camps, compared to ten over the same period of 2013.
These figures speak for themselves and tell their own shocking story. Without comment they make the case for investigation and action for which the UN and other parties have called. Our hearts go out to families who have lost loved ones, particularly children. Grief is always poignant, but to grieve in these sorts of circumstances is particularly painful. Children and their right to life deserve particular protection as provided for under international law.

The decision by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to join the 15 UN organisations and the call for an international agreement has been seen as a positive and an important one. It aims to force Israel to apply the rules of international humanitarian law in the occupied Palestinian territories and to enable accountability, thus holding Israel accountable for its human rights violations, bringing perpetrators to justice, as well as providing international protection of those rights.

– The Israeli occupation arrested 1,450 residents from Jerusalem in 2013, including 450 children and 25 women.
– They have displaced 446, destroyed 95 shops and issued destruction warrants to the owners of hundreds of houses.
– (...) sharp increase in the targeting of Palestinian residents in Jerusalem, including arbitrary arrests of women, children and elderly people. One of the children who was arrested last year was a 5 year old. He was arrested and confined inside a military vehicle for one hour. More than 20 children from those arrested were interrogated and kept under remand arrest for more than five days in solitary confinement. During this time they were confined to cells and prevented from seeing lawyers. In addition, the children were tried in secret hearings in which none of their relatives or lawyers were present. The cells where they were kept, the report said, did not meet minimum humanitarian standards.
– hundreds of Palestinians in Jerusalem were displaced as their houses were destroyed by Israeli forces who claimed that the houses were built without licenses. It said that hundreds of families were handed demolition warrants under the same pretext, while the Israeli government announced plans to build more than 4,500 settlement units despite the resumption of negotiations over final status issues. During the same year, hundreds of Palestinians were prevented from entering Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Friday prayer was cancelled six times by Israeli occupation forces.
Meanwhile, the report said that
– more than 9,050 Israeli extremist settlers, including ministers, MKs, and other senior officials invaded Al-Aqsa Mosque during the same year.
– More than 2,000 Israeli soldiers and intelligence members have broken into the mosque.
– Calls to divide the mosque on a time and place basis have sharply increased and has been discussed at government and Knesset meetings. Senior Israeli officials, according to the report, have spoken candidly about building the “Jewish Temple” in certain parts of Al-Aqsa Mosque. Israeli soldiers and extremists stole the keys to Al-Magharbeh Gate and broke into the mosque. Palestinian protesters there face continuous Israeli invasions, which sometimes lead to severe violence when Israeli forces open fire on Palestinian protesters.

Syria: the revolution that never was
Voir ici : ►http://seenthis.net/messages/193401
Deuxième remarque, en lien avec notre précédente discussion ; ici, l’auteur de traduit pas (Bilad ash-sham) en Levant : il écrit directement « Islamic State of Iraq and Sham »

Enough conspiracy theories about Yasser Arafat’s assassination - Asa Winstanley
▻http://www.middleeastmonitor.com/articles/inquiry/8338-enough-conspiracy-theories-about-yasser-arafats-assassinatio
And this weekend’s new “Killing Arafat” film was most illuminating in more respects than one. What struck me most was the lengths to which the Palestinian Authority’s thuggish regime (which acts as a proxy for Israel) went to obstruct Swisher’s investigation, reserving particular venom for Al Jazeera.
They blocked their filming, sent undercover goons to tail them around Ramallah – and even broke into their hotel room, rifling through their bags – as revealed by the team’s concealed cameras.
Such behaviour by the PA is highly suspicious, and only adds more reasons to suspect that Israel may have used a Palestinian accomplice for the murder.

Ce membre de la Confrérie des Frères a, depuis 1981, effectué de nombreux séjours en prison. Il a de nouveau été arrêté.
El Erian has written extensively on Egyptian politics as well as Islamic and Arab affairs. He is a founding member of the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights and an associate member of the Arab Organization for Human Rights.

In 1995, El Erian was sentenced to five years with hard labour by a military court for his membership of the Muslim Brotherhood.
In May 2006, he was detained and held in custody for seven months for supporting judges’ protests.

Et sur le terrain, où il est très actif auprès des populations les plus pauvres.
