  • Israel slams decision by Canada and Sweden to resume Unrwa funding

    https://www.middleeasteye.net/live-blog/live-blog-update/israel-slams-decision-canada-and-sweden-resume-unrwa-funding

Israel on Saturday slammed the decision by Canada and Sweden to resume aid to the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees, saying supporting Unrwa was a “serious mistake”.

Several countries, including the United States and Britain, paused their funding to Unrwa in late January after accusations by Israel that a dozen of the agency’s 13,000 staff in Gaza took part in the Hamas attack on southern Israeli towns on 7 October.

Canada and Sweden announced over the weekend they were resuming funding for the agency, which has been fundamental to humanitarian efforts in the Gaza Strip, where more than three quarters of the 2.2 million population have been displaced by Israel’s military campaign.

The Israeli foreign ministry called on both governments to cut funding, saying the renewed aid showed that Canada and Sweden had chosen “to ignore the involvement of Unrwa employees in terrorist activity”.

On Saturday, Sweden announced an initial payment of $20m after receiving assurances of extra checks on Unrwa’s spending and personnel.

Canada said on Friday that it would resume funding to Unrwa “because of the dire humanitarian situation on the ground”, but did not elaborate.

A Palestinian journalist reported on Thursday that Israeli forces have airdropped Ramadan leaflets on Gaza, calling people to feed the needy.

The journalist denounced it as an example of “psychological torture”.

The poster reads “provide for the needy and speak kindly.”

It also states that they wish that their fasts are accepted, ahead of Ramadan, the holy month which is set to start next week.

The poster comes at a time where 20 Palestinians, including children, have died from malnutrition and dehydration since the start of the war.

Israel has cut off all aid, electricity, water and fuel from Gaza since 9 October.

. After blocking aid and obstructing the UN, Israel is now contacting families in Gaza to manage distribution of goods

The Israeli military has approached some Palestinians in the northern Gaza Strip and asked them to coordinate future aid entry to sidestep the Hamas-run government and UN agencies.

Middle East Eye has learned that representatives of at least two families in Gaza City and northern towns have been contacted by Israeli authorities who asked them to “cooperate with them”.

They are requested to adhere to the instructions provided by the Israeli authorities to facilitate the entry of goods and receive and distribute international aid.

It was not immediately clear whether the two families had taken up the offer and there are no signs that such coordination has taken effect as of yet.

. Protesters demonstrate outside of the New York office of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (Aipac), a pro-Israel lobby group, for its role in influencing US support for Israel during the ongoing assault on Gaza, on 22 February 2024 (John Lamparski/Reuters)

Last week, hundreds of people protested at the Manhattan headquarters of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (Aipac), the most formidable pro-Israel lobbying group in the United States, as well as at the offices of US senators who receive funding from Aipac, demanding a ceasefire. New York police arrested 12 people.

The action was organised by the New York chapter of the anti-Zionist group Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and was the latest of dozens of Jewish protests against Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza.

In November, Jewish activists occupied the Statue of Liberty, demanding an immediate ceasefire and chanting “Not in our name”. The ongoing protests since 7 October 2023 confirm what pro-Israel groups have feared for the past two decades: that support for Israel is dwindling among American Jews.

In fact, a survey conducted by the Jewish Electorate Institute in June and July 2021 found that 22 percent of Jews believed that Israel was “committing genocide against the Palestinians”, while 25 percent agreed that “Israel is an apartheid State”, and 34 percent thought that “Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians is similar to racism in the US”. Of those under 40 years old, 33 percent believed that Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinians. These numbers were collated two years before the current genocide.

Like JVP, a Jewish congregation called Tzedek, founded in 2015, had initially described itself as “non-Zionist” but later redefined itself as “anti-Zionist”. The predominantly younger membership in such organisations also signals a generational shift within US Jewry. (...)

  • First it was Corbyn. Now the whole British public is being smeared over Gaza

The smearing of Corbyn over his criticisms of Israel worked. But gaslighting much of the public as a dangerous “mob” for opposing even more egregious Israeli crimes may yet backfire

The spokesman for the Israeli army, Daniel Hagari, told a news conference that Israeli soldiers did not intentionally open fire on hungry Palestinians in the aid convoy massacre that left at least 118 dead and more in critical condition.

“This was a humanitarian operation we conducted, and the claim that we intentionally struck the convoy and intentionally harmed people is baseless,” he was quoted as saying by Times of Israel.

“We are investigating this incident, we have all the footage we need to complete an exhaustive investigation and find out the truth of the facts of this incident, and we will present the findings,” Hagari said.

The army had previously released edited drone footage of the incident and confirmed its soldiers fired on Palestinians, but claimed most were killed in a stampede – despite overwhelming eyewitness reports of Israel shooting at the crowd, and a UN team reporting that many of those injured had gunshot wounds.

Letter aims to bring public anger over 30,000 deaths of Palestinians in Gaza into heart of parliaments

      https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/mar/01/politicians-from-12-countries-unite-to-press-for-arms-ban-on-israel

More than 200 MPs from 12 countries have committed themselves to trying to persuade their governments to impose a ban on arms sales to Israel, arguing they will not be complicit in “Israel’s grave violation of international law” in its assault on Gaza.

The letter, organised by Progressive International, is seen as the best practical measure possible to bring public anger over the 30,000 deaths of Palestinians in Gaza into the heart of parliaments, where calls for an immediate unconditional ceasefire have so far fallen on deaf ears or been rejected by national governments.

The organisers believe governments supplying arms are vulnerable to legal challenges given the scale of devastation in Gaza that they say extends beyond any definition of self-defence or proportionality.

The signatories are all MPs in parliaments where the governments allow arms sales to Israel.
      https://blogs.mediapart.fr/internationale-progressiste/blog/010324/nous-ne-serons-pas-complices-de-la-violation-du-droit-international-

Israël a refusé.

  • George Galloway who campaigned against Gaza war wins UK by-election | Israel War on Gaza News | Al Jazeera
    https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/3/1/uk-politician-galloway-who-campaigned-against-gaza-war-wins-by-election

A left-wing United Kingdom politician has registered a landslide win in a parliamentary by-election on a platform promising to advocate for Gaza.

George Galloway won the seat in the northern English town of Rochdale after a fractious campaign, which saw the Labour Party withdraw support from its candidate over his anti-Israel comments.

Galloway won 12,335 votes compared with 6,638 for second-placed David Tully, an independent candidate. The former Labour candidate, Azhar Ali, came fourth after the opposition party pulled its support after he was recorded espousing conspiracy theories about Israel. Turnout was low at 39.7 percent.

“Keir Starmer, this is for Gaza,” Galloway said on Friday, referring to the Labour leader who initially refused to call for a ceasefire in Gaza where more than 30,000 people have been killed in the past five months of Israeli bombardment.

“You have paid and you will pay a high price for the role you have played in enabling, encouraging and covering for the catastrophe presently going on in … in the Gaza Strip,” he said.

Galloway, who represents the Workers Party of Britain, accused both Labour and the Conservatives of backing Israel as he ran a pro-Palestinian campaign in the constituency with a substantial Muslim population.

Veteran left-wing politician George Galloway is set to return to the UK parliament after winning Thursday’s Rochdale by-election in a vote dominated by the refusal of the UK’s main parties to back a ceasefire in Gaza.

Galloway, representing the Workers Party of Britain, won almost 40 percent of the votes and nearly 6,000 more votes than his nearest rival.

Speaking after the results were announced, Galloway took aim at both opposition Labour leader Keir Starmer, who is facing growing dissent in his own party over his failure to support an immediate ceasefire, and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

“Keir Starmer - this is for Gaza,” said Galloway, who was a Labour MP from 1987 until he was expelled from the party in 2003 over his opposition to the Iraq war.

“Keir Starmer and Rishi Sunak are two cheeks of the same backside and they both got well and truly spanked tonight here in Rochdale.”

    • Berlin film festival criticises artist’s call for end to apartheid in West Bank
      26 February 2024 20:54 GMT
      https://www.middleeasteye.net/live-blog/live-blog-update/berlin-film-festival-criticises-artists-call-end-apartheid-west-bank?

The Berlinale film festival released a statement criticising comments made by an Israeli director, who referred to the system in the occupied West Bank as apartheid.

Israeli film maker Yuval Abraham won the Best Documentary award for his film No Other Land, which follows the Palestinian activist Basel Adra as he fights against the Israeli occupation of his town Masafer Yatta in the West Bank. The film was co-directed by Adra.

“We are standing in front of you. Now, we are the same age. I am Israeli, Basel is Palestinian. And in two days, we go back to a land where we are not equal,” Abraham said onstage at Berlinale.

“Basel, like millions of Palestinians, is locked in the occupied West Bank. This situation of apartheid between us, this inequality, has to end.”

The comments were condemned by German politicians, including Chancellor Olaf Scholz who said the one-sided opinion “cannot be left alone”.

“We understand the outrage that the statements made by some of the award winners were perceived as too one-sided and, in some cases, inappropriate,” the Berlinale festival said in a statement.

The Minister of State for Culture Claudia Roth announced that it is launching a probe into incidents that took place over the weekend at the festival.

Incredibly cowardly press release sent around by Berlinale just now:

    • Yuval Abraham יובל אברהם sur X :
      https://twitter.com/yuval_abraham/status/1762558886207209838

A right-wing Israeli mob came to my family’s home yesterday to search for me, threatening close family members who fled to another town in the middle of the night.

I am still getting death threats and had to cancel my flight home.

This happened after Israeli media and German politicians absurdly labeled my Berlinale award speech - where I called for equality between Israelis and Palestinians, a ceasefire and an end to apartheid - as ‘antisemitic’.

The appalling misuse of this word by Germans, not only to silence Palestinian critics of Israel, but also to silence Israelis like me who support a ceasefire that will end the killing in Gaza and allow the release of the Israeli hostages - empties the word antisemitism of meaning and thus endangers Jews all over the world.

As my grandmother was born in a concentration camp in Libya and most of my grandfather’s family was murdered by Germans in the holocaust, I find it particularly outraging that German politicians in 2024 have the audacity to weaponize this term against me in a way that endangered my family.

But above all else, this behavior puts Palestinian co-director Basel Adra’s life in danger, who lives under a military occupation surrounded by violent settlements in Masafer Yatta. He is in far greater danger than I am.

I’m happy our award winning film, No Other Land, is sparking an important international debate on this issue - and I hope that millions of people watch it when it comes out this year. Sparking a conversation is why we made it. You can have harsh criticism of what me and Basel said on stage without demonizing us. If this is what you’re doing with your guilt for the holocaust - I don’t want your guilt.

  • Germany: Berlin schools asked to distribute leaflet describing the 1948 Nakba as a ’myth’ | Middle East Eye
    https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/berlin-schools-handout-leaflet-myth-israel-1948

Germany’s leading Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the opposition Christian Democratic Party (CDU) have ordered high schools in Berlin’s borough of Neukolln to distribute brochures titled The Myth of Israel #1948.

During a public meeting of the Neukolln district council of Berlin on Wednesday, a motion was passed stating that "the district office is asked to advocate the use of the brochure “Myths#Israel1948” in Neukolln’s secondary schools to confront existing anti-Semitic narratives within the educational framework of the school".

“The expanded definition of antisemitism of the IHRA (International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance) and the German government should also be communicated”, the motion added.

The brochure is created by the Jewish association Masiyot, which was founded in 2022 and enjoys the support of the Berliner Landeszentrale fur politische Bildung, the Federal Center for Political Education.

It seeks to unite professionals from different disciplines to “raise awareness of authoritarian ideologies through education, enlightenment and criticism”, the website says.
    (...)
The brochure states there are five “myths” around the creation of the state of Israel, which are subsequently refuted in short essays by various authors.

In the first section, debunking myth #1, that Jews and Arabs lived together in peace before Israel was founded, Israel’s pre-state militia, the Haganah, responsible for the destruction of 531 Palestinian villages and the expulsion of 700,000 Palestinians between December 1947 and the summer of 1948, is promoted as a merely “defensive” Jewish resistance movement.

Under ’Myth #2: Israel was established on stolen Palestinian land’, Masiyot states that the acquisition of land by Jewish immigrants to Palestine took the form of a legal exchange of capital for an official title deed.

At no point in history was land illegally conquered by Jewish immigrants, the author of the text, Michael Spaney, claims.

Even land conquered following the wars of 1948 and 1967 and the subsequent construction of settlements, which are internationally recognised as a violation of international law, did not occur unlawfully, it says.

“Anyone who uses the accusation of land theft as an argument demonises Israel and denies its legitimacy, i.e. acts out of antisemitic motives,” Spaney wrote.

“Myth #5: Israel is to blame for the Nakba”, includes a text by researcher Shany Mor titled “the UN is distorting the meaning of the Nakba: its view of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is extremely one-sided”.

In the text, Mor states that “displacement during war - then and now - was nothing unusual”.

He also labels the UN’s attention to the Palestinian cause “obsessive” and the Arab defeat of 1948 a myth.

“In the 1948 War of Independence, 6000 Jews were killed, fully 1% of the total population (was it a genocide?)”, a Twitter post by Mor reads.

Most Israelis don’t believe an “absolute victory” in Gaza is likely, a new poll by the Viterbi Family Center for Public Opinion and Policy Research at the Israel Democracy Institute has shown.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has in recent weeks repeated his vow to achieve “absolute victory” in Gaza before ending the war.

Fifty-five percent of respondents to the study viewed the likelihood of achieving the goal as low.

The poll also showed that a majority of Jewish respondents, around 68 percent, oppose the transfer of humanitarian aid to Gaza .
