What inner city kids know about social media, and why we should listen — I.M.H.O. — Medium
▻https://medium.com/i-m-h-o/53ea514c9ec0
What we adults learned during those six weeks was that these teenagers were extremely savvy with privacy on social media, sometimes to the point of bafflement. For example, did you know that many teens “delete” their #Facebook accounts altogether every time the rest of us would just log out? They’re taking advantage of the fact that Facebook actually keeps much of your account information on its servers when you decide to “leave” the service, allowing them to stay under the radar from nosy friend, parent, or public searches while they’re not online. Their photos disappear and their status updates go on the down-low—at least until the next time they log back in by re-activating their accounts.
Seen by the State — Walking through the #Stasi Museum while watched by the #NSA — Quinn Norton

I don’t carry a purse, so I keep my little informer in my pocket. I briefly wondered if it could tell the NSA (or BND in this case, but I imagine they share) what room I was in at any given moment, or only that I was at Stasi headquarters.
I’m not sure the Stasi broke the law very often. Like the NSA today, the law was mostly with them. They had a job — protect the SED — and they did it the best they could. They built all manner of clever recorders. They drilled holes in everything so they could put recorders in the objects of normal life .
Algorithm Tracks Literary Emotion in Shakespeare, the Brothers Grimm | Singularity Hub
▻http://singularityhub.com/2013/10/11/algorithm-tracks-literary-emotion-in-shakespeare-the-brothers-grimm
the paper compared fairy tales to novels and found, on average, fairy tales have a higher density of emotive words, even as they vary more around that mean. Further, fairy tales use more words with a positive emotional association than a negative association.
Such inquiries may seem useful only for a specific niche, but Mohammad thinks his system can objectively study big social questions too.

Western Hypocrisy and a New Challenge for Muslim Democrats — Democracy in Egypt
▻https://medium.com/democracy-in-egypt/9d8d9ca48960
Following the removal of Egypt’s democratically elected government, pro democracy Muslims have a challenge trying to explain the hypocrisy of the west.
In the wake of the removal of Morsi’s democratically elected government there have been many dreadful scenes of the carnage that ensued. Scenes made even more shocking by the callous support of the killings by Liberal Fascists opposing the democratic choice.
However few things could be as horrific as a short audio clip aired on the BBC Six O’Clock News of an Egyptian lambasting hypocrisy of the west. In the broadcast, a pro Morsi supporter, a lawyer by profession, deplores the west for demanding democracy and then when their preferred candidate fails to win, forgetting all about it.
“This is democracy? You always for ten years have told us that Muslims you have to go to democracy, Muslims you have to go to elections, Arabs you have to go to elections, we already gone to elections, we elect a president, Morsi is elected president, where’s the human rights? Where’s the humanity? Where is the democracy? Where is the principles? Liars Liars Liars Liars”
His words are particularly chilling as many fear that we are witnessing the death of democracy in the Middle East and the dawn of a new dark age for Muslims.

On Medium, you’re not alone. You write beside and with other people. This means your posts link to each other, your ideas bump into each other, and instead of living on an island somewhere out on the web, you’re part of a dynamic whole, where each part makes the others better.
What gets done is what gets done — Better Humans — Medium

The way you get stuff done isn’t by having reasonable estimates of the work required, or being a sustainable company, it’s about personal work-heroism, and the precedent you just set is going to bite you down the line.
And once you’ve established that heroism is required to hit deadlines, just like gas in a container, work will expand to fill the available space. You’ll find that more and more weekends and late nights are required to meet the expectations you’ve set yourself on what you and your team can achieve.

Coffee vs. beer : which drink makes you more creative ? — #Design / UX
▻https://medium.com/design-ux/f7fcb3b786b1
While alcohol may not be the drink of choice when you need to be alert and focused on what’s going on around you, it seems that a couple drinks can be helpful when you need to come up with new ideas.
