Police reported on Wednesday that they had recovered part of the haul from a supplier in neighbouring English-speaking New Brunswick.

The breakthrough was so important that police outriders were dispatched to protect the trucks returning the syrup.

Yvon Poitras, the general manager of the New Brunswick Maple Syrup Association, revealed the extraordinary security arrangements.

“(The convoy’s) under police protection going somewhere in Quebec,” he said. “We’ve been asked not to talk because it’s under investigation.”

Julienne Bosse, the manager of SK Exports, the firm that was holding the syrup said she suspected the raid was triggered by provincial rivalries.

“Quebec thinks it’s no longer in Canada,” she said. “It’s been years that their federation keeps hitting us and saying that we can’t buy syrup in Quebec but we’ll keep doing it.”
