  • WAFA : « Islamic-Christian committee condemns desecration of Mar Elias Church in Haifa by extremist Jewish groups » | - IMEMC News
    https://imemc.org/article/wafa-islamic-christian-committee-condemns-desecration-of-mar-elias-church-in-

JERUSALEM, Wednesday, July 19, 2023 (WAFA) – The Islamic-Christian Committee in Support of Jerusalem and its Sanctuaries today condemned what it called “the barbaric attack” carried out by Jewish religious groups on the Church and Monastery of Mar Elias in the city of Haifa in northern Israel.

It said in a statement that the storming of the church by Jewish religious groups and holding prayers inside it, claiming that there are graves for Jews in the church, constitutes an unprecedented, serious escalation and violation of the holy places of Palestinian Christians.

The Committee said that the claim that there are graves for Jews in churches is a pretext for seizing and Judaizing them, which is an aggression similar to what is being done in Al-Aqsa Mosque.

It stressed that this new allegation comes in the context of the repeated attacks by Jewish religious groups targeting the Christian presence, desecrating and vandalizing Christian holy places, and attacking and spitting on priests and monks in the streets.

It called on the European countries and the World Council of Churches to assume their responsibilities in defending the Arab Christian presence and to intervene to stop the Israeli plans aimed at obliterating and undermining the Palestinian Christian presence in Jerusalem and the rest of the Palestinian territories.

Meanwhile, an Israeli official working at the Western Wall Plaza in Jerusalem’s Old City today ordered Roman Catholic Abbot Nikodemus Schnabel to remove his cross while accompanying a German minister on a visit to the Western Wall, describing the cross as “provocative” and “inappropriate for this place.”

Nikodemus refused to take off the cross, which he regularly wears over his religious garment, insisting that the cross is part of his faith, saying the demand of the Israeli official is “very harsh,” and accusing her of “not respecting my religion.”

In a statement, the Al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of the Hamas movement, claimed responsibility for the shooting and said it was a natural response to the Israeli aggression and crimes against the Jenin refugee camp and the Palestinian people in every part of Palestine.

“This is a message to the criminal Smotrich (Israeli Finance Minister, far-right ultranationalist colonizer Bezalel Smotrich), telling you that Al-Qassam almost knocked on your door,” Al-Qassam said, “We promise you more resistance; those who plant death and destruction against our people will only reap death and defeat….”

After the shooting, dozens of soldiers invaded Qibya village, west of the central West Bank city of Ramallah, where Ahmad lived with his family, and abducted his father, Hilal Ghethan, his older brother, Mohammad, and his sister, Sanari, 25. • In Worst acts of Retaliatory Violence: Palestinian Killed, Dozens of Houses and Vehicles Burnt in Widescale Attacks by Israeli Occupation Forces and Settlers in Ramallah
      Date: 21 June 2023 Time: 19:30 GMT
      https://pchrgaza.org/en/in-worst-acts-of-retaliatory-violence-palestinian-killed-dozens-of-houses-

The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) condemns in the strongest terms today’s widescale violence and retaliatory acts conducted by hundreds of settlers under the protection of the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) in Turmus ‘Ayya village in northern Ramallah, north of the West Bank. Setters’ violence has killed a Palestinian and injured 11 others, some in serious condition, in addition to setting dozens of houses, facilities, and vehicles ablaze.

Those attacks were triggered by the Israeli ministers’ incitement policy that is persistent due to the impunity policy and protection provided for settlers’ racist violence that is backed by Israel’s top military and political echelons.

According to initial information collected by PCHR’s fieldworker, at approximately 13:58 on Wednesday, dozens of armed and masked settlers, from “Shilo” settlement, which is established in eastern Ramallah, broke into Turmus ‘Ayya village. The settlers immediately carried out retaliatory violence, indiscriminately opened fire at Palestinians and their houses and set many vehicles parked on the village’s streets ablaze. Meanwhile, villagers gathered and tried to confront the settlers with stones, so the latter directly opened fire at them and burned several residential houses. Afterwards, violent clashes broke out on the village’s streets and heavy smoke spread after several vehicles and houses were burnt. More settlers then arrived in the village and raided most of the residential houses to the right side of the village’s main entrance, forcing the residents out, and setting the houses and their gardens ablaze. Later, large Israeli forces moved into the village amid heavy firing of bullets and teargas canisters at the protestors to protect the Israeli settlers while conducting their attacks.

Head of Turmus ‘Ayya Village Council, Lafi Adeeb Shalabi, said to PCHR’s fieldworker that the initial results of settlers’ attacks indicated that about 30 houses were completely burnt in addition to 60 vehicles.

At around 16:00, as confrontations heightened, IOF secured the settlers’ withdrawal to the main entrance to the Town (Bypass Road 60). Meanwhile, the protestors chased them when IOF opened fire at them, wounding 12 Palestinians with live bullets. The wounded were taken to a local hospital in the village, where it turned out that several serious injuries were referred to the Palestine Medical Complex, including ‘Omar Hisham ‘Abdullah Jbara (25), who was shot with a live bullet in the chest. The doctors tried to save his life but in vain as his death was pronounced at around 16:22.

The shooters were identified as Mohannad Shahada, 26, who was killed on site by an Israeli paramilitary colonial settler, and Khaled Sabah, 24, who managed to escape from the scene of the shooting but was pursued by Israeli soldiers who killed him and wounded another Palestinian civilian.

According to eyewitnesses, the two Palestinians drove up to the gas station, entered a restaurant attached to the gas station, and shot at the Israelis who were dining there, killing four people and wounding four.

Israeli media reported that the two Palestinian shooters had been imprisoned together at the Israeli prison of Megiddo two and a half years ago.

After the attack, the Palestinian resistance movement, Hamas, praised the shooting, saying the shooting was “a response to Israel’s crimes carried out at the Jenin refugee camp and the aggression against the Al-Aqsa Mosque. The struggle won’t stop until our people are free and independent.”

The Israeli army later invaded Orif town, south of Nablus, before storming the family homes of the two Palestinians and took measurements of the properties to prepare for demolishing them as part of Israel’s collective punishment policies, illegal under International Law and all related human rights treaties, including the Fourth Geneva Convention.

Israeli daily Haaretz said that while this attack could lead to accelerated operations to prepare for a large-scale military offensive in the West Bank, such an offensive would occur due to political leadership pressure.

Haaretz said the offensive, which would be dubbed Guardian of the Walls II, which refers to the original operation in 2021, could be different than what its name suggests but likely a limited offensive that would last for a few days “to calm things on the ground,” and to appease demands from the Israeli right-wing.
