Colonist Israeli settlers set on fire to a Palestinian-owned farm land, on Saturday, in Burin village, south of the northern West Bank city of Nablus.

Palestinian chief of the profile for illegal Israeli settlements in the northern West Bank, Ghassan Daghlas, told media outlets that several armed Israeli colonists, from the illegal Israeli settlement of Giv’at Ronaie, broke into the nearby Palestinian-owned farm land, east of Burin village.

Daghlas said that right after they invaded the farm land, they set fire to hundreds of fruitful olive trees among other crops.

He added that after the attack, the colonists fled the area, back to their illegal settlement.

Noteworthy, Israeli colonial settlers repeatedly attack Palestinian-owned farm lands throughout the West Bank. There are almost 200 illegal Israeli settlements, erected on Palestinian lands, across the West Bank.

These settlers’ attacks on Palestinians and their property, are widely perceived by Palestinians as vicious attempts to disrupt the already difficult lives of Palestinians, intending to force them to concede their farmlands, which are adjacent to the colonial Israeli settlements.

The Palestinian killed by Israeli police on Sunday has been identified as Fares Bassam Abu Naab . His father said that the circumstances and the position of the car completely contradict the narrative of the police, who claimed that they fired on the car during the chase. The car was not hit with any bullets, however.

In addition, a cellphone video taken from an apartment above the street clearly shows the young man parking and exiting the vehicle. It then shows a heavily armed Israeli police officer running toward him, shooting him, then running back.

Abu Naab’s father said that his son was forced out of the car, and then he was shot. He said that what happened is clearly an execution, and that the police claim they want to do an autopsy. The family has refused the autopsy, and the Israeli police will be taking the family to court. (...)

    • Family of Slain Palestinian Say Israeli Officials Are Lying About How He Was Killed
      December 28, 2019
      https://imemc.org/article/family-of-slain-palestinian-say-israeli-officials-are-lying-about-how-he-was-

Although a month and a half has passed since the killing of the Jerusalemite, Faris Bassam Abu Nab , questions remain about the circumstances of his death, and his family members say Israeli officials have had contradictory and deceptive statements. Abu Nab was shot by Israeli forces near the Tunnel checkpoint, south of Jerusalem.

According to the Jerusalem-based Silwan Information Center, Bassam Abu Nab, the father of the killed Palestinian, said that he assigned a lawyer to follow up on the case of shooting his son and investigate, stressing that he continues to search for the truth of what happened to his son, and to hold the perpetrators accountable and punish them.

Abu Nab said: “AbuKbeir Institute of Forensic Medicine refuses, to this day, to give me the results of the autopsy, and I did not receive the initial or final report, and he told me that it was transferred to the Police Investigation Unit (Mahash), and when I headed to the police and asked the official, he first denied and then refused to provide any information”.

Abu Nab added that the condition of his son’s body revealed that he was killed “in cold blood”, because the bullets were in the upper part of the body, in the heart, chest, head, and neck, and the signs of assault were clear on his head from the back and lower back, as if he was dragged to the ground, in addition to dislocating his elbow, and all this refuted the occupation’s narration that only his feet were shot — but his feet did not contain any bullets.”

Abu Nab continued, “From the moment I learned about the incident, the occupation police told me that they opened fire at the vehicle from the rear on the pretext that it was ‘illegal’. But I myself found the car by chance parked in the parking lot of Al-Maskobyeh in West Jerusalem, and it had no sign of any bullets, and after examination and investigation it was found that it was legal.”

      https://agencemediapalestine.fr/blog/2019/12/19/israel-a-tue-32-de-mes-amis

Israeli defense minister, Naftali Bennet, admitted this week an Israeli assassination attempt of a senior Islamic Jihad leader in Damascus, in November of last year.

The defense minister’s assertion came during an interview with Israeli TV channel 12, in which Bennet spoke of his army’s actions to curb what Israel terms Palestinian terrorist groups, including the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

The assassination attempt in the Damascus suburb of Almozza, claimed the life of Moaath Akram Aljouri, son of Akram Aljouri, who is a senior aid of the Islamic Jihad’s leader in exile and the Diaspora, Ziyad Alnakhalla.

Bennet also admitted that the assassination attempt against Alajouri coincided with a similar attempt in Gaza, in which senior military leader of the Islamic Jihad group in the coastal territory, Bahaa Abhu al-‘Ata, 42, was killed along with his wife, when Israeli warplanes struck Abuelatta’s Gaza home, on November 12, 2019.

The two simultaneous assassination attempts sparked retaliation by the Islamic Jihad in Gaza, where the group fired several hundreds of projectiles on nearby Israeli areas, with few slight injuries and minor causalities, reported.

    https://imemc.org/article/israeli-soldiers-kill-a-palestinian-near-hebron

Israeli soldiers shot and killed, Monday, a young Palestinian man in the al-‘Arroub refugee camp, north of Hebron, in the southern part of the occupied West Bank.

Medical sources at the al-Ahli Hospital in Hebron said the soldiers shot Omar Haitham al-Badawi, 22, with a live round in the chest.

They added that the soldiers surrounded the refugee camp, and refused to allow the medics through, as they were rushing into it to provide treatment to several Palestinians, including al-Badawi.

Local then placed the seriously wounded Palestinian in a car and rushed him to the al-Mezan Hospital, in Hebron, where he died from his serious gunshot wound to the chest and the massive bleeding.

The fatal shooting took place after the army resorted to the excessive use of force against dozens of Palestinians marking the fifteenth anniversary of the death of the late President Yasser Arafat, before several young men started throwing stones at the soldiers, stationed in the permanent military roadblock at the entrance of the refugee camp.

In related news, the soldiers attacked protests near the northern entrance of al-Biereh city, in central West Bank, causing dozens to suffer the effects of teargas inhalation.

Omar al-Badawi, 22, was reportedly shot in the abdomen in a refugee camp during a march in memory of the late Palestinian president

“There were protests in commemoration of Yasser Arafat’s death, like every year,” Mohammad Badawi, a 28-year-old cousin of Omar Badawi, told Middle East Eye. “Then the Israeli army entered the camp.

“Soldiers were firing live ammunition, tear gas and sound bombs into the crowd, and one of the tear gas cannisters exploded next to Omar’s house, causing a small fire,” Mohammad, 28, recounted. “So he stepped outside of his house to go see what was wrong. He was holding a bottle of water, and communicated to one of the soldiers that he was just going to put out the fire. The soldier immediately fired live ammunition at him in his abdomen and he fell to the ground.”

Footage published by Palestinian news outlet J Media reportedly showed the moment Badawi was shot at close range, as Mohammad estimated his cousin was some 50 metres away from the soldiers.

“Omar did not present any danger to them. You can see in the photos he was in his house clothes, still wearing his house slippers when he came outside,” Mohammad Badawi said.

In the video, soldiers are seen firing bullets and throwing tear gas cannisters, even as Palestinian journalists and civilians attempt to carry Badawi to safety. (...)

    • Palestinian shot dead when Israeli troops mistake his towel for a firebomb
Gideon Levy and Alex Levac Nov 28, 2019 - Haaretz.com
      https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/.premium-palestinian-shot-dead-when-israeli-troops-mistake-his-towel-for-a-

Omar al-Badawi stepped outside to douse a small fire that started when a Molotov cocktail accidentally struck the wall of his house. At that very moment, Israeli soldiers shot him dead

He was killed because he was holding a towel. The soldiers thought it was an incendiary device and shot him to death, on his doorstep.

A video of the incident leaves no room for doubt: A young man steps out from his front door, with a towel, and shouts to a neighbor to bring water fast to help him put out the flames that are licking at the wall of his house – which was ignited by a Molotov cocktail that teenagers had thrown at soldiers, and that had missed its mark. A soldier standing down the lane immediately opens fire at the young man, who collapses and tries in vain to get up. He dies a short time later.

Thus ended, so senselessly, the short life of Omar al-Badawi, 22, from the Al-Arroub refugee camp, located on the main road between Bethlehem and Hebron.

The incident took place on November 11, the anniversary of Yasser Arafat’s death, which each year is a day of unrest in the occupied territories in general and in Al-Arroub in particular. On November 11, 2014, Mohammed Jawabreh, 19, was killed there – shot in his home with live ammunition by Israel Defense Forces soldiers standing on the roof of a nearby house. The IDF claimed at the time that the troops thought Jawabra was holding a weapon and felt they were in danger, but an investigation by B’Tselem, the Israeli human rights organization, ruled out that possibility. This time around, the soldiers thought their victim was holding a Molotov cocktail – which was actually a towel.

Also on November 11, the year following Jawabreh’s killing, Ibrahim Dawad, a 16-year-old, from the village of Deir Ghasana, north of Ramallah, was shot dead by Border Police.

It’s a narrow alley, just wide enough to walk through, in the upper part of the Al-Arroub camp, and not far from its entrance. Garbage bags are piled in front of the house; a huge memorial poster of the deceased covers the top floor, placed there by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. House abuts house here, window is next to window – this is the camp’s most densely populated area. From the door of this house Badawi emerged briefly, during what turned out to be the last moments of his life.

The lane leading up to the house is steep. The soldier who shot Badawi – one bullet, to the upper body – stood lower down, with about 20 meters as the crow flies separating him and his victim. Badawi fell on his back onto the steps leading to his home, before rolling down into the street.

It was a little after noon. The soldiers tried to drive the stone throwers – a few dozen high-school pupils – from Highway 60 back into the camp, chasing them and firing tear-gas grenades whose fumes wafted into the houses. Badawi was at home, renovating his parents’ bathroom. When tear gas began drifting in, he hurried outside together with his sister Maram, 23, his 16-year-old brother Basal, and two cousins, Hamza, 14, and Yazen, 12. He shouted to the neighbor across the way, a relative named Tareq Badawi, 25, to open the door, and the five young people rushed in, seeking shelter from the thick smoke.

A few minutes later, Omar noticed that the outer, unplastered wall of his own house was on fire, along with a climbing plant outside Tareq’s house and curtains, inside. The young demonstrators were now tossing Molotov cocktails at the soldiers. Badawi rushed out, a towel in hand, to douse the flames, and shouted at the neighbors to bring water. At that moment he was shot.

Now the wall of his house is blackened with soot, and Tareq’s curtains and climbing plant are scorched.

Video clips recorded the sequence of events. One was taken by the Palestinian press photographer Muad Amarna, who was wearing a bullet-proof vest with the label “Press” on it; four days later he lost an eye after being shot by IDF troops in the village of Surif, near Hebron. Footage taken by another local journalist, Abdul Rahman Hassan, shows Badawi emerging from the house with the towel and walking down the steps. Two press photographers are seen standing across the way, another is behind him, all of them covering the protests and trying to evade the tear gas.

The moment Badawi asks for water to help him put out the fire, he is shot. Anguished cries and curses are heard. Badawi is placed in a private car, which takes him to the local clinic of UNRWA, the United Nations refugee agency.

In a second clip taken by Amarna, when he still had two eyes, three soldiers are seen firing three shots in the air, and walking back and forth – and then another shot is heard, but not fired by them. Badawi is then seen collapsing. This time the video is taken from the front, from the alleyway. Badawi was not shot by the soldiers standing nearby, rather by a soldier in ambush, who aimed and fired, from the bottom of the road.

Wearing flip-flops, jeans and a purple T-shirt, Badawi is seen gripping his bleeding stomach and stumbling. Hysterical cries are soon heard as his friends carry him to the neighbor’s car.

Haitham Badawi is the bereaved father now grieving over the death of his son. He’s 55, an employee of Al-Arroub’s local “popular committee,” and has three daughters and two surviving sons. The living room is small. Omar, his father says, served in the Palestinian police until he left the force after being transferred to a job in intelligence. Lately he had been working with his uncle doing renovations in the camp and had started to build his own apartment on the second floor of his parents’ home, where he hoped to raise his own family. As far as is known, there was no intended bride. The bereaved mother, Hajar, joins the conversation. The parents were not home when their son was killed, we are told: He was at work, she was at the clinic, where she was having her blood pressure checked.

Omar awoke that morning exceptionally early, at about 6:15. It was cold in the house, and his mother urged him to go back to bed. Omar’s uncle Nur Badawi lives in the adjacent house. He is a janitor at a local college and came home earlier than usual. School ends early on the memorial day for Arafat. Nur was standing a meter and a half away from Omar when he was shot. He first drew back in a panic and then rushed to help evacuate his dying nephew. As they carried Omar to the car the soldiers threw stun grenades before leaving. The family was afraid the soldiers would kidnap the wounded Omar. He managed to say to Tareq, who rushed to him: “My back hurts.” Those were his last words.

Some time after he was brought to the UNRWA clinic, a Palestinian ambulance arrived and took Badawi to the Al Ahli Hospital in Hebron. Highway 60 was closed because of the unrest and it took the ambulance 20 minutes to get there, via back roads. He was still breathing when he arrived at Al Ahli, but at 1:30 P.M., 40 minutes later, he was pronounced dead.

During our visit, the phone in the family’s home rings. The headquarters of the District Coordination and Liaison Office requests that they come to give testimony to the Military Police investigators who are looking into the incident. Omar’s parents aren’t sure how they can get to the DCL building, in Hebron.

The IDF Spokesperson’s Unit told Haaretz this week: “The incident in question is under investigation, following which the findings will be forwarded to the military advocate general. Naturally, details cannot be provided at present concerning an ongoing investigation.”

An Israeli flag flies provocatively above the fortified IDF watchtower that looms over the entrance to Al-Arroub, on the main road. That flag is in the face of anyone who opens a window or a door in the camp.

The bathroom Badawi was renovating on the last day of his life is totally bare. He’d managed to remove tiles from the old wall and the floor, but hadn’t yet replaced them. The bag of old tile shards lies mutely at the entrance to the house.

    • Ce que l’armée israélienne fait aux soldats qui tirent sur des Palestiniens
Dans 18 cas de fusillade enquêtés par l’armée israélienne, personne n’a été traduit en justice.
      Gideon Levy, Alex Levac | 18 nov. 2021 | 11:53 PM | 36
      https://www.haaretz.com/misc/article-print-page//.premium.HIGHLIGHT.MAGAZINE-what-the-israeli-army-does-to-soldiers-who-shoo

    https://imemc.org/article/israeli-air-strikes-kill-one-palestinian-injure-three-in-gaza

The Health Ministry in the besieged Gaza Strip has confirmed that one Palestinian was killed, on Saturday at dawn, and three others were injured, in Khan Younis, in the southern part of the coastal region. The army also fired many missiles into several areas in the Gaza Strip, after alleging that “projectiles were fired from Gaza.”

Dr. Ashraf al-Qedra, the spokesperson of the Health Ministry in Gaza, said one Palestinian, identified as Ahmad Mohammad Shahri , 27, was killed by the Israeli missiles, in Khan Younis, in the southern part of the coastal region.

He added that three other Palestinians were injured, before they were rushed to Nasser Hospital, in Khan Younis.

The Israeli army claimed it was retaliating to “projectiles” that were reportedly fired from the Gaza Strip, into the nearby Negev town of Sderot.

Israeli sources did not report injuries, but stated that the Iron Dome intercepted seven shells, and added that one woman, in her sixties, was mildly wounded when she “fell while heading to a protected area.”

Very minor damage was reported in a wall of one home, while the windshields of a few cars were shattered.

Media sources in Gaza said the army fired many missiles into thirteen sites across the coastal region, causing serious property damage to several buildings and homes.

Among the targeted areas are sites run by the al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, in Khan Younis and Rafah, in addition to two other sites in northern Gaza, and one in central Gaza, in addition to farmlands, east of Gaza city.

Hamas spokesperson, Fawzi Barhoum, warned Israel of the consequences of escalation against the Gaza Strip and stated that the resistance is ready for any possible scenario.

    https://imemc.org/article/palestinian-killed-at-israeli-checkpoint-near-tulkarem

A young Palestinian man was shot and killed by Israeli forces at Jabara military roadblock, south of the northern West Bank city of Tulkarem, on Friday evening.

The slain Palestinian was later identified as Ra’ad Majed Mohammad al-Bahri, 25, from Kafr Zibad village, south of Tulkarem.

A correspondent with the Palestinian WAFA News Agency confirmed that a young man died after being shot by the Israeli forces at the roadblock after the soldiers shot him.

WAFA also reported that the young man was left to bleed to death when Israeli forces refused to allow the entry of ambulances of the Palestinian Red Crescent Society to the roadblock.

The Israeli army claimed that the “man ran towards the military roadblock, intending to attack the soldiers.”

    • A young Palestinian’s walk of death
The guards at a checkpost that’s off-limits to pedestrians claimed the young man approaching them had a knife. They kept shooting at him after he was wounded and prostrate. Now Israel won’t return his body to his family
      Gideon Levy, Alex Levac | Nov. 1, 2019 | 8:00 AM
      https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/.premium-walk-of-death-1.8063752

Why did he keep walking? What was going through his head and what were his intentions? Did he plan to assault the security guards, or did he simply want to die? His cousin shouted to him to stop. Two drivers, whose vehicles were parked on the roadside, warned him that if he kept going he would be shot. The armed guard standing behind the concrete cube also called to him to turn back. But he ignored them all. He strode purposefully forward, not running but also not pausing, toward the checkpoint, walking to his death. The guards say he was armed with a knife, but three eyewitnesses didn’t see a weapon. When he failed to halt, one of the guards fired two rounds in the air, then two more at the young man’s legs – by the book. Bleeding, he fell to the ground. He tried to get up, although it’s not clear whether that was a voluntary effort or not. Then the guards sprayed him with eight to 10 more bullets that tore his body apart.

The dead man, Raad Bakhri, 25, came from a West Bank family that has been conducting business with Israelis for years. Since he had no security record and showed no inclination of wanting to hurt anyone, he too received a permit to work in Israel, not long ago.

After the horrific incident two weeks ago, Majid Bakhri, Raad’s stunned father, was told to go to the Tul Karm Governmental Hospital (aka Martyr Dr. Thabet Thabet Hospital) to collect his son’s body. While he was en route, however, the Israeli authorities had a change of heart: They have been holding onto the body since the incident and refusing to return it to the family.

The bereaved father has only two requests now: to know the whole truth about what happened at the Jabara checkpoint – known as Te’enim (Figs) Crossing, in Israeli parlance – on the evening of October 18, and to get his son’s body back for a proper burial at home.

Kafr Zibad is a small village in the rural area known as the Kufriyat, which lies between Tul Karm and Qalqilyah. The verandah of the Bakhris’ small stone house overlooks farmland; there are a few uncultivated fruit trees in the garden. In memory of Raad, Palestinian and Fatah flags have been hung on a truncated olive tree.

The elder Bakhri, 66, greets us with a toothless smile. In his best Hebrew, he calls himself an “advertising man”: He explains that he owns a printing press which he uses to print ads, images and slogans on T-shirts, hats, cups, banners and other objects. He does a great deal of business with Israel. Raad was the third of five children. Born in 1994, he had enrolled in the industrial management department at the Palestine Technical College - Kadoorie in Tul Karm, but dropped out in order to join the family business. A month ago or so, however, he decided he wanted to work in Israel, with the goal of saving enough money to be able marry and establish his own home, even though his father wanted him to stay in the business. Raad received a work permit that allowed him to sleep in Israel and got a job at a construction site in Kfar Sava. During the last week of his life he didn’t work because Israel was closed off to West Bank Palestinians during the Sukkot festival. He spent the time helping to harvest olives on the family’s land, a few hundred meters from their house.

On that Friday the 18th, he walked with his father and with his brother, Noor a-Din, to the olive grove. He was in a good mood, Bakhri recalls now. They returned home in the afternoon; Raad showered and changed his clothes, and they had supper together. Apparently the family was still pondering an incident that had occurred two days earlier.

On Wednesday evening, Raad was driving the family car, a 1999 Seat. At an intersection not far from Kafr Zibad, next to a car wash, another car hit Raad’s lightly. The two drivers got out and seemed to be relatively relaxed, until three young men from Tul Karm who had been standing at the intersection came over, and a violent brawl ensued. They hit Raad on the head with a chair, whereupon he went to the Tul Karm hospital, where he needed stitches. Was it there that the seeds of his death were planted?

According to local sources, Raad returned home distraught and asked his father and brother to go with him to Tul Karm to find his attackers and take revenge on them; they refused. Bakhri says now that his family contacted the families of the young men involved in the fight and planned to hold a sulha – a ceremony of reconciliation – that Saturday. For his part, the father rules out any connection between the brawl and his son’s death. Others in the town think Raad was upset because his family did not agree to avenge the attack on him. That, too, is not enough to dispel the fog surrounding the circumstances of his death.

In any event, on Friday evening after supper, M.S., a cousin in her 60s from Tira, an Arab town in Israel, called; Bakhri says she loved Raad more than she loved her own children. M.S. asked Raad to bring her freshly harvested green olives. Since the Bakhris’ trees yield only black ones, Raad bought 10 kilos of green olives from a neighbor, and filled three soft-drink bottles with home-made olive oil, as gifts for the beloved cousin from Tira.

Raad told M.S. to drive to the Jabara checkpoint, south of Tul Karm, to pass through it in her car, make a U-turn and park on the right side of the road, facing west. Raad also went to the checkpoint, parked on an internal road below the main road, took out the olives and the bottles of oil, and walked via a small olive grove toward his cousin, who was waiting in her car.

He was wearing his best clothes, she related later, and was in good spirits. He only told her that he was in a hurry, people were waiting for him. He put the olives and the olive oil in the trunk of her car, declined to accept money, mumbling “Another time” – and left.

Raad started to walk toward the checkpoint. There was a red plastic barrier, what’s called a “New Jersey roadblock,” along the roadside. The Palestinians know it’s forbidden to pass it on foot. A few dozen meters further along the road is a sign in three languages declaring that entry is prohibited to pedestrians. Raad ignored the sign and walked on.

Parked in front of the checkpoint at the time were two cars belonging to Palestinian drivers waiting to transport home West Bank retruning from their jobs in Israel. It was about 7:40 on Friday evening. One of the drivers suddenly noticed the pedestrian who was heading westward, toward the checkpoint, and shouted: “Stop – they’ll shoot you!” Raad made a dismissive gesture with his hand and went on walking. Another driver, who was eating falafel in his car, also saw what was happening and says he remembers being furious at the young man who was ignoring the warnings.

Abdulkarim Sadi, a field researcher for B’Tselem, the Israeli human rights organization, went to the checkpoint on three successive evenings after the fatal incident that day, to find eyewitnesses. He is the one who found the two drivers, both from Tul Karm, one 45 years old, the other 21. The two refused to have their names published, for fear it would cause them trouble vis-a-vis Israel.

Separately, the two men gave Sadi the exact same account about what had happened. Both emphasized that they did not see Raad holding anything. The cousin, M.S., who was still standing there, saw her beloved relative advancing toward the checkpoint and also shouted to him to stop, but to no avail.

Jabara, like many other West Bank checkpoints, is manned by guards from a private security firm. One of them, positioned behind a concrete cube there, shouted to Raad, “Go back, go back” in Hebrew and Arabic. His shouts were loud, clearly heard by those at the checkpoint. But Raad ignored them.

At this point the guard fired two warning shots in the air and then two more at Raad’s legs. An instant after he collapsed, laying in a pool of blood, he apparently tried to get up with his last remaining strength. More guards approached – it’s not clear how many – and opened fire. Eight or 10 bullets struck him.

His father says now that he was told his son was hit with a “rain of bullets.” The images that were released afterward, apparently by Israel, show only a black body bag by the roadside with blood trickling from it; there is also a photo of an unknown hand holding a knife.

A spokesman for the Defense Ministry, which bears responsibility for the checkpoint, provided the following statement to Haaretz this week: “There was a terrorist holding a knife who charged at the security detail at Te’enim Crossing with the aim of perpetrating an attack. The terrorist ran toward the guards, on Sabbath eve, under cover of darkness, and in the area prohibited to pedestrians. The security team at the crossing operated according to protocol: They called to him to halt a number of times, signaled him with a flashlight to stop and commenced deterrent firing. The shooting, with the aim of incapacitating the terrorist, was carried out from extremely close range, and only when it became clear that he was holding a knife in his hand and that his purpose was to attack the security detail. The attempted attack was documented and investigated. The facts of the incident are perfectly clear and refute your allegations,” regarding whether Raad had a knife, and whether the forces had no alternative to killing him.

The two drivers and the cousin – who called one of Raad’s brothers to tell him what happened – apparently hurried to leave the site. The checkpoint was closed off to traffic. According to Majid Bakhri, another 45 minutes passed before his son’s body was evacuated.

An autumnal breeze blows past the verandah of the house. “What was he thinking? Only Allah knows. I want to know exactly what happened, without falsifications,” Bakhri tells us. “I want to know what happened on our side and what happened on their side. I asked the cousin: By God, tell me if there was a knife, and she said no. If there had been a knife, her husband, who was also in the car with her, would have stopped Raad.”

This past Sunday, at 1:30 in the morning, the Bakhri family awoke to the sound of loud knocking at the door. Six jeeps of the Israel Defense Forces accompanied an agent of the Shin Bet security service who goes by the name “Captain Abu al-Ez,” who had come to question the grieving father at the only time available to them. They wanted to find out whether anyone intended to avenge Raad’s killing. The captain told the father that Raad had pulled a knife before he was shot. Majid says he told him, “You say that. I believe it. I will not say that you are lying. But I also am not lying. I don’t know exactly what happened.”

Majid says he wants to see the footage from the security cameras at the checkpoint, but hasn’t been allowed to so far. He asked his wife, Rima, to check if a knife was missing from the house. None was missing.

Majid: “Raad had an entry permit to Israel. If there was anything going through his mind, what would have been easier than entering Israel and carrying out an attack there? So why didn’t he do that, if that was in his head? Only God knows what was there.”

Then he suddenly chokes up and gasps, and for the first time since our conversation began, tears well up and Majid begins to weep, silently.

A group of around 30 masked Israeli settlers attacked Israeli and international human rights activists on Wednesday, beating them with crowbars while they were protecting Palestinian farmers trying to harvest olives in the village of Burin, in the West Bank.
Eighty year old Rabbi Moshe Yehudai told reporters that he “feared for his life” as he was beaten mercilessly on the head, arm and shoulders. He was one of five Israeli human rights activists who was beaten in the attack.
Yehudai was rushed to hospital with severe head injuries and a broken arm.
Yehudai is a member of Rabbis for Human Rights, a group made up of Israeli and international Rabbis and supporters that engage in human rights accompaniment in the West Bank, especially in areas known for Israeli settler violence.
According to local sources, more than 30 masked Israeli settlers came running into the olive grove where the harvest was going on, and began beating the Palestinian farmers, Israeli rabbis and international human rights activists.
While being treated for his injuries, Yehudai told reporters from the Times of Israel, “Suddenly, the settlers came with their faces [covered]. They started running at us, they surrounded me, threw rocks at me, hit me with crowbars, giving me a head injury. I told them I’m 80 years old. Leave me alone.”
But the settlers kept coming and beating him and the other activists and observers.

  • Palestinian Prisoner Dies in Israeli Jail

    https://imemc.org/article/palestinian-prisoner-dies-in-israeli-jail

Cancer-stricken Palestinian prisoner Bassam al-Sayyeh , from the northern West Bank district of Nablus, died today in Israeli jail, due to medical negligence, said the Palestinian Detainees and Ex-Detainees Commission.

Al-Sayyeh, 47, was detained in 2015, he was diagnosed with bone cancer in 2011 and blood cancer in 2013.

The commission held the Israeli government fully responsible for the racist crimes committed against Palestinians, including the physical and psychological torture and medical negligence of prisoners, among other violations, calling for an investigation into these crimes.

The death of al-Sayyeh brings the number of Palestinian prisoners who died in Israeli jails since 1967 to 221 prisoners.

At least 700 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails suffer from serious health conditions, 160 of whom are in need of urgent medical follow-up.

Palestinians have accused the Israeli authorities of failing to provide proper medical treatment, or of delaying treatment to ill prisoners, causing a deterioration in their health.

In Nablus on Sunday, hundreds of Palestinians gathered for a peaceful march demanding justice for the prisoner Bassam al-Sayyeh, from Nablus, who died early Sunday in Israeli jail, due to medical negligence.

Participants in the march in the city of Nablus, which took place on Sunday evening, held the Israeli Prison Authority fully responsible for the martyrdom of Bassam al-Sayyeh.

During the march in Martyrs’ Square, the participants called for the need to stand by the prisoners and support their cause, especially sick prisoners who do not receive any care.

And they called on the regional coordination committee, to participate in the vigil against the practices of the occupation, tomorrow at noon in Martyrs’ square, also in response to what they called the unnecessary, negligent of Bassam al-Sayeh.

Al-Sayeh’s death came six weeks after the death of another prisoner, a Palestinian prisoner, Nasser Taqatqa , 31, from Beit Fajar near Bethlehem, who was found dead of acute pneumonia in an isolation cell in Nitzan Ramle detention center.

He had been held under Israeli interrogation since 19 June in Jalameh detention center, after he was arrested by Israeli occupation forces from his home. After ongoing harsh interrogation, he was sent to solitary confinement in Nitzan prison.
