Ainsi M. Samir Geagea, dirigeant de l’extrême droite chrétienne, suggère-t-il (25 juillet 2006, 06BEIRUT2471) : « La clé pour démanteler le Hezbollah comme force militaire est d’en faire “un problème intérieur”, c’est-à-dire de faire comprendre au peuple libanais que le Hezbollah est la menace qui a causé tant de destruction au pays. La pression politique résultante, accompagnée de la dégradation continue de ses capacités infligée par l’armée israélienne, est le seul chemin vers le désarmement. » Pour M. Geir Perdersen, envoyé personnel du secrétaire général des Nations unies au Liban (5 août 2006, 06BEIRUT2539), « Israël a besoin de trouver rapidement un moyen pour permettre à des “facteurs politiques” de gérer la menace du Hezbollah (…) Un tel facteur serait l’opinion publique libanaise ».

Selon un câble diplomatique de l’ambassade américaine au Liban daté du 24 août 2006, soit dix jours après la fin de la guerre dévastatrice entre le mouvement chiite libanais Hezbollah et Israël, M. Hariri a exhorté la communauté internationale à isoler le président Assad. M. Hariri a également mis en garde les responsables américains contre des troubles au Liban si la communauté internationale ne parvenait pas à isoler M. Assad avec des sanctions.

A la question de savoir qui pourrait combler le vide en cas de chute du régime de M. Assad, M. Hariri a proposé une alliance entre les Frères musulmans, interdits en Syrie, et d’anciens responsables syriens en exil comme l’ancien vice-président Abdel Halim Khaddam et un ex-chef d’état-major, Hikmat Chehabi, toujours selon les documents.

Nasrallah accused the Bush Administration of working with Israel to deliberately instigate fitna, an Arabic word that is used to mean “insurrection and fragmentation within Islam.” “In my opinion, there is a huge campaign through the media throughout the world to put each side up against the other,” he said. “I believe that all this is being run by American and Israeli intelligence.” (He did not provide any specific evidence for this.) He said that the U.S. war in Iraq had increased sectarian tensions, but argued that Hezbollah had tried to prevent them from spreading into Lebanon. (Sunni-Shiite confrontations increased, along with violence, in the weeks after we talked.)

Nasrallah said he believed that President Bush’s goal was “the drawing of a new map for the region. They want the partition of Iraq. Iraq is not on the edge of a civil war—there is a civil war. There is ethnic and sectarian cleansing. The daily killing and displacement which is taking place in Iraq aims at achieving three Iraqi parts, which will be sectarian and ethnically pure as a prelude to the partition of Iraq. Within one or two years at the most, there will be total Sunni areas, total Shiite areas, and total Kurdish areas. Even in Baghdad, there is a fear that it might be divided into two areas, one Sunni and one Shiite.”

He went on, “I can say that President Bush is lying when he says he does not want Iraq to be partitioned. All the facts occurring now on the ground make you swear he is dragging Iraq to partition. And a day will come when he will say, ‘I cannot do anything, since the Iraqis want the partition of their country and I honor the wishes of the people of Iraq.’ ”

Nasrallah said he believed that America also wanted to bring about the partition of Lebanon and of Syria. In Syria, he said, the result would be to push the country “into chaos and internal battles like in Iraq.” In Lebanon, “There will be a Sunni state, an Alawi state, a Christian state, and a Druze state.”

The Americans, my interlocutor suspected, are trying to provoke an Iraqi civil war so that Sunni Muslim insurgents spend their energies killing their Shia co-religionists rather than soldiers of the Western occupation forces. “I swear to you that we have very good information,” my source says, finger stabbing the air in front of him. “One young Iraqi man told us that he was trained by the Americans as a policeman in Baghdad and he spent 70 per cent of his time learning to drive and 30 per cent in weapons training. They said to him: ’Come back in a week.’ When he went back, they gave him a mobile phone and told him to drive into a crowded area near a mosque and phone them. He waited in the car but couldn’t get the right mobile signal. So he got out of the car to where he received a better signal. Then his car blew up.”

Impossible, I think to myself. But then I remember how many times Iraqis in Baghdad have told me similar stories. These reports are believed even if they seem unbelievable. And I know where much of the Syrian information is gleaned: from the tens of thousands of Shia Muslim pilgrims who come to pray at the Sayda Zeinab mosque outside Damascus. These men and women come from the slums of Baghdad, Hillah and Iskandariyah as well as the cities of Najaf and Basra. Sunnis from Fallujah and Ramadi also visit Damascus to see friends and relatives and talk freely of American tactics in Iraq.

“There was another man, trained by the Americans for the police. He too was given a mobile and told to drive to an area where there was a crowd - maybe a protest - and to call them and tell them what was happening. Again, his new mobile was not working. So he went to a landline phone and called the Americans and told them: ’Here I am, in the place you sent me and I can tell you what’s happening here.’ And at that moment there was a big explosion in his car.”

Just who these “Americans” might be, my source did not say. In the anarchic and panic-stricken world of Iraq, there are many US groups - including countless outfits supposedly working for the American military and the new Western-backed Iraqi Interior Ministry - who operate outside any laws or rules. No one can account for the murder of 191 university teachers and professors since the 2003 invasion - nor the fact that more than 50 former Iraqi fighter-bomber pilots who attacked Iran in the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war have been assassinated in their home towns in Iraq in the past three years.

Impossible, me dis-je. Mais ensuite, je me rappelle le nombre de fois où des Irakiens, à Bagdad, m’ont raconté des histoires du même genre. On croit ces rapports, même s’ils paraissent invraisemblables. Et je sais où l’on peut glaner une bonne part des informations syriennes : parmi les dizaines de milliers de pèlerins chiites qui vont prier à la mosquée de Sayda Zeinab, à l’extérieur de Damas. Ces hommes et ces femmes viennent des quartiers déshérités de Bagdad, tels Hillah et Iskandariyah, de même que des villes de Najaf et Bassora. Des sunnites de Fallujah et Ramadi vont également visiter Damas pour y voir des amis et des proches et parler librement des tactiques américaines en Irak.

« Il y avait un autre homme encore, entraîné par les Américains pour faire partie de la police. À lui aussi, on a donné un GSM et on lui a dit de téléphoner vers une zone où se massait une foule - peut-être une action de protestation - et de leur raconter ce qui se passait. Là non plus, le GSM ne fonctionnait pas. Il s’est donc servi d’un téléphone par fil et a appelé les Américains pour leur dire : ‘C’est moi, à l’endroit où vous m’avez envoyé, et je puis vous raconter ce qui se passe ici.’ Et, au même moment, il y a eu une énorme explosion à son véhicule. »

Ma source ne m’a pas spécifié qui pouvaient bien être ces « Américains ». Dans le monde frappé par l’anarchie et la panique qu’est l’Irak, il y a de nombreux groupes américains - y compris les innombrables satellites supposés travailler pour l’armée américaine et le nouveau ministère irakien de l’Intérieur soutenu par l’Occident - qui opèrent au mépris de toutes lois et règles. Personne n’a pu être accusé de l’assassinat de 191 professeurs d’université et autres enseignants depuis l’invasion de 2003, ni du fait que plus de 50 anciens pilotes de chasseurs bombardiers qui ont attaqué l’Iran lors de la guerre irano-irakienne de 1980-88 ont été assassinés dans leurs villes de résidence en Irak ces trois dernières années.

Et, pour rappel, le New York Times a filmé récemment une scène invraisemblable (et passée totalement inaperçue) dans laquelle l’Armée syrienne libre manipule un prisonnier pour en fait un kamikaze à son insu :
