Ce n’est un secret pour personne que le commerce du sexe est tissé de misogynie. La gauche libérale et d’autres soi-disant « progressistes » laissent souvent de côté leurs principes pour appuyer un commerce mondial multimilliardaire fondé sur la douleur et l’oppression des femmes et des filles. Cela n’est pas surprenant, compte tenu du sexisme généralisé de la gauche, mais les mêmes apologues restent souvent silencieux quant au fait incontestable que les femmes et les filles noires, brunes et autochtones du monde entier sont les premières achetées et vendues dans la prostitution. Au cours d’une recherche approfondie menée en préparation de mon nouvel ouvrage sur l’industrie du sexe (The Pimping of Prostitution : Abolishing the Sex Work Myth), j’ai rencontré et interviewé des femmes et des hommes qui résistent à la banalisation du racisme au sein de la prostitution.

#Pala_Molisa, une universitaire d’origine Pacifica qui milite contre la violence masculine en Nouvelle-Zélande, a souvent été accusée d’être « putophobe » après avoir analysé la prostitution comme une forme d’oppression. Molisa a été menacée de perdre son emploi, elle a été la cible d’une campagne d’intimidation et de harcèlement en ligne, et a été accusée par des propagandistes du travail du sexe d’être une « bigote sexuellement réprimée ».

Article 308 is a remnant of the Ottoman rule, but its origin is even more distant – historically and geographically – as the Ottomans had imported it from the French penal code. In countries that were under French colonial rule, such as Lebanon and Tunisia, laws like Article 308 are a direct hangover.

The roots of these laws lie in the cultural impact of centuries under colonial rule, where subjugation was ultimately secured by a true “gentlemen’s agreement”. While foreign powers took control of the state, in exchange they offered local men complete control of their homes.

The colonialists fed and legitimised the misogynist voices within the colonised, and so many of the barriers that women face in the region stem directly from this strategy of using patriarchy as a tool of oppression.

When seen from this perspective, it is less surprising to find that law surrounding rape that gave birth to all those we find in the Middle East and North Africa was only abolished in France as recently as 1994 – only five years before Egypt did away with it.

Au cours des dernières décennies, des campagnes dites de « droits des travailleurs du sexe » visant à décriminaliser le proxénétisme et l’achat de sexe se sont greffées aux luttes de libération des lesbiennes et des gais (ou, si vous souhaitez être à la mode, de la constellation LGGBDTTTIQQAAPP). Il est logique à bien des égards que le mouvement pro-prostitution se présente comme faisant partie d’une fière campagne de justice sociale, puisqu’il contribue à perpétuer le mythe selon lequel la prostitution est libératrice.

J’ai entendu plusieurs fois des lobbyistes pro-prostitution comparer la campagne visant à légaliser le proxénétisme, la tenue de bordels et l’achat de sexe, avec la campagne qui a remporté, en 1967, une décriminalisation partielle des actes homosexuels au Royaume-Uni. En tant que lesbienne qui ne m’est jamais cachée et qui en est fière, je trouve cette analogie aussi offensante que traîtresse. La prostitution profite aux hommes qui souhaitent coloniser le corps des femmes, alors que la capacité d’échapper à la contrainte à l’hétérosexualité concerne la liberté personnelle de définir sa propre sexualité.

Le féminisme libéral (celui des « fun feminists ») appuie depuis longtemps le lobby de la prostitution. Il le fait en accordant foi aux mensonges selon lesquels la prostitution peut être « sexuellement libératrice » pour les femmes et en tentant de s’associer, d’une façon ou d’une autre, à d’autres campagnes critiques du contrôle patriarcal de notre corps. Par exemple, la Sex Workers Alliance of Ireland (Alliance des travailleurs sexuels de l’Irlande) a prétendu tout de go l’an dernier qu’il existait un alignement étroit entre le mouvement pro-choix et la campagne visant à décriminaliser le proxénétisme et l’achat de sexe. L’argument utilisé par la SWAI était que les deux concernent l’autonomie du corps, alors qu’en réalité, le mouvement pro-prostitution plaide pour le « droit » des femmes appauvries à être sexuellement livrées aux hommes en échange d’argent.

La misogynie est-elle une forme d’extrémisme ? Chaque fois que je vois des déclarations comme celle de la première ministre Theresa May sur la nécessité de s’en prendre à « toutes les formes d’extrémisme », je ne peux pas m’empêcher d’insister pour que nous ajoutions à cette liste la haine des femmes.

Après tout, c’est une question politique. La misogynie tue. L’exclusion des femmes ne peut et ne doit pas être séparée de la violence qui leur est faite.

Samedi dernier, le cadavre d’Ellen Higginbottom, 18 ans, a été découvert dans le parc aquatique d’Orrell. Deux hommes ont depuis été arrêtés pour soupçon de meurtre, et la police de la ville de Manchester a déclaré ne pas exclure « un motif sexuel ». La misogynie, par contre, n’a aucunement été mentionnée comme motif.

Que les hommes puissent haïr une femme assez pour la tuer afin de se procurer une excitation sexuelle est apparemment si banal que l’on ne prend même pas la peine de le noter. Si Ellen Higginbottom avait été debout dans une foule quand un fanatique religieux ou un terroriste d’extrême-droite s’y était précipité en voiture, le contexte politique de sa mort aurait sans doute eu droit à un certain degré d’analyse. Au lieu de cela, on nous présente toujours les mêmes raisons traditionnelles pour lesquelles des hommes tuent des femmes : désir sexuel, jalousie et quelques allusions abstraites et décontextualisées à une « perte de contrôle ».

Aucun homme politique ne demande ce qui aurait pu inciter les assassins de Madame Higginbottom à la cibler, tout comme aucun politicien ne réclame d’enquête sur la façon dont les hommes britanniques sont devenus si radicalisés qu’ils massacrent leurs partenaires féminines à hauteur de deux par semaine. Il peut exister une certaine reconnaissance de l’existence de la misogynie et du caractère problématique de la violence masculine, mais on constate une profonde réticence à relier ces deux problèmes. La culture qui nourrit le désir des hommes de faire mal aux femmes reste à bien des égards au-delà de toute critique.

But the present ceasefire is not solely the result of Syrian and regional developments. The last hope of the non-Isis opposition in Syria and its foreign allies was that Hillary Clinton would win the presidential election and switch US policy to one more committed to getting rid of Assad and more hostile to Russia. Instead, they were horrified by the election of Donald Trump, a candidate even more dismissive of the non-Isis rebels, focused on destroying Isis and more favourable to a Russian alliance than President Obama. 

Will the US acceptance of Russia playing a dominant role in Syria be capsized by new US sanctions against Moscow and the expulsion of 35 Russian diplomats? Probably not, because what Trump is proposing to do openly in Syria is not much different from what Obama was doing without publicity. It is a long time since the US was seriously interested in getting rid of Assad — it has instead been concentrating on defeating Isis. This is likely to continue under Trump and might even have done under Hillary Clinton, if she had become president. At this stage, US policy in Syria and Iraq would in any case be difficult to unglue.

The foreign media has allowed – through naivety or self-interest – people who could only operate with the permission of al-Qaeda-type groups such as Jabhat al-Nusra and Ahrar al-Sham to dominate the news agenda.

The precedent set in Aleppo means that participants in any future conflict will have an interest in deterring foreign journalists who might report objectively. By kidnapping and killing them, it is easy to create a vacuum of information that is in great demand and will, in future, be supplied by informants sympathetic to or at the mercy of the very same people (in this case the jihadi rulers of east Aleppo) who have kept out the foreign journalists. Killing or abducting the latter turns out to have been a smart move by the jihadis because it enabled them to establish substantial control of news reaching the outside world. This is bad news for any independent journalist entering their territory and threatening their monopoly of information.

So there was Samantha Power doing her “shame” bit in the UN. “Is there no act of barbarism against civilians, no execution of a child that gets under your skin, that just creeps you out a little bit?”, America’s ambassador to the UN asked the Russians and Syrians and Iranians. She spoke of Halabja, Rwanda, Srebrenica “and, now, Aleppo”.

Odd, that. For when Samantha talked about “barbarism against civilians” in Aleppo, I remembered climbing over the dead Palestinian civilians massacred at the Sabra and Chatila refugee camps in Beirut in 1982, slaughtered by Israel’s Lebanese militia friends while the Israeli army – Washington’s most powerful ally in the Middle East – watched. But Samantha didn’t mention them. Not enough dead Palestinians, perhaps? Only 1,700 killed, including women and children. Halabja was up to 5,000 dead. But Sabra and Chatila certainly “creeped me out” at the time.

And then I recalled the monstrous American invasion of Iraq. Perhaps half a million dead. It’s one of the statistics for Rwanda’s dead. Certainly far more than Srebrenica’s 9,000 dead. And I can tell you that Iraq’s half million dead “creeped me out” rather a lot, not to mention the torture and murders in the CIA’s interrogation centres in Afghanistan as well as in Iraq. It also “creeped me out” to learn that the US president used to send innocent prisoners off to be interrogated in... Assad’s Syria! Yes, they were sent by Washington to be questioned in what Samantha now calls Syria’s “Gulags”.

We’re going to find out if the 250,000 civilians “trapped” in the city were indeed that numerous. We’re going to hear far more about why they were not able to leave when the Syrian government and Russian air force staged their ferocious bombardment of the eastern part of the city.

And we’re going to learn a lot more about the “rebels” whom we in the West – the US, Britain and our head-chopping mates in the Gulf – have been supporting.

There are so many players with such diverse agendas in the Syrian civil war that past “turning points” have turned out to be no such thing. But what is truly important about what we have just seen in Aleppo is that the outside allies of the armed opposition to Assad – Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and, in a somewhat different category, the US - have not come to the rescue of the rebels whom they have previously supported. 

Over the last five years it has been foreign powers and not domestic parties in Syria who have dictated who is winning or losing at any particular moment. When Assad was losing he went to the Russians, Iranians, Iraqis and Hezbollah and asked for more support. Likewise, the insurgents looked to their external allies when they were on the retreat. This time round this has not happened. The Russian military intervention in September 2015 finally and permanently tipped the balance of power Assad’s favour.

In reality, Assad was always likely to stay in power because the upper ranks of his regime were united, he had a powerful army but, above all, because Russia and Iran were always more committed to his survival than Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the US were to regime change.
