An Ottoman Calendar, 19th Century (Osmanlı Takvim-i Devri Daim)

Perpetual almanac. 17th-century illustration of a perpetual almanac (a type of calendar) devised for the English county of Staffordshire, and presented in the form of a clog almanac, which consisted of a log of wood with four edges, shown here as four vertical blocks. Each notch represents a day, with large notches representing a week. Each of the edges shows a period of three months, with the whole representing a year. The symbols represent religious festivals and phases of the moon. The dedication by English naturalist Robert Plot (1640-1696), first Professor of Chemistry at the University of Oxford, and the first keeper of the Ashmolean Museum, is to English antiquary Elias Ashmole (1617-1692). Artwork from Plot’s ’The Natural History of Staffordshire’ (1686).

DELL’ ALMANACCO PERPETTUO1676Splendid WoodcutsRare BookVenice, Italy, 1676. Exceedingly rare early edition of this scarce intriguing almanac. Many woodcuts, detailed and delightful. Medicine meets mysticism, science mixes with sorcery. Odd and intriguing. In darkened vellum binding, worn, missing corner, and the binding is more of a portfolio as the pages, bound together, slip right out, not attached anymore. Some repair work was done on this book long ago, not particularly skillful work especially at the spine. Pages patched up, mostly at the start, and some newer endpapers. Missing the main title page, there is a title page further in, two books bound as one - volume begins with a lengthy index (heavily repaired), a few prefaces, then p.1 is the beginning of the monthly almanac with small woodcuts. Missing p.81-p.84, p.151-p.155, p.385/6, & p.395/6, ends properly on p.516 then comes a title page and new pagination ending on p.142. Some browning, toning, staining, and worn edges. 4 x 7 inches. Historic valuable book.No Reserve. We ship worldwide. Shipping fees will usually go down per book when more than one shipped out together. Sales tax for Vermont buyers. Astronomical rotula from 1799. This device can be used to predict dates and times for astronomical events such as the rising and setting of the Sun, Moon and stars, Full and New Moons, and eclipses. Designed by George Margetts (1748-1804). The parts move (held together by the pin at centre) and can be turned to predict the desired event up to 6000 years in the past or future.
