The global coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak, which has been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO), has even more severe consequences for precarious people. Refugees are at the top of these sections. Due to the impact of the epidemic on the economy, businesses from different sectors in Turkey from different sectors took a break to work, hundreds of thousands of workers were sent to the unpaid leave. Since refugees are employed unregistered, they cannot benefit from government support packages such as unemployment benefits.

Refugees who try to fight the corona are also facing hunger and homelessness. Refugees who spend their limited savings for food are delaying their bills and rents. However, the homeowners demand their rent by not listening to the unemployment caused by the corona epidemic.

Speaking to the Refugee Media, the refugees stated that they expect understanding from their hosts and that they will pay their accumulated rents after the outbreak. Refugees on the calls to stay at home ’The landlords do not listen to the corona. Because we couldn’t pay the rent for a month, they say, get out of the house. We will not have a house to stay near, ’they said. Refugees want to find solutions for rent.

One of those facing this problem is Syrian refugee Reem and her family. Reem’s wife was a waitress in a restaurant and was unemployed due to the closure of the workplace under quarantine measures. Reem and his family, who live in hunters, say that they have been living in the same house for 3 years and are never too late to pay the rent.

Reem said, “We pay 1050 TL rent. The landlord is calling for rent every day, it is said. “Do you want to sit free?” He says. In his last call, he closed my face because I said ’my wife will take money from the boss and give you’. We just don’t have to pay this month. After passing the corona, we will pay with our accumulated rents. ”

’We Don’t Open the Landlord’s Phones’

Zakariya, who lives in Sultangazi, has been living in the same house for 3.5 years and states that he paid his rent in time. Stating that they paid 1250 TL house rent, Zakariya said, “We were paying on the 10th of every month. Our work stopped this month due to the corona. We are 9 people at home and 3 people work. In 3 of us we were working in workshops and we were unemployed. When the time came to pay, we called the landlord and explained all the events. He reacted against us. Now when we call, we don’t open it, we have no other solution. ”

    ’This is a Temporary Process’

Mahmoud, who lives in Gaziosmanpaşa, said, “I have been living in the same house for about 4 years and we pay regular rent every month. Our rent is 875 TL. I live with my wife and two children. The bag workshop, where I have been unemployed for 5 weeks, has stopped production. In this troubled process, our host is not understanding. He began to call early before the time for rent. I was really in economic trouble. I borrowed for not working. We want homeowners to be understanding. This is a temporary process ”
