State player Petrovietnam denied any move to suspend its Junin 2 project in Venezuela and said the heavy-oilfield development was “progressing normally”, reports have said.
Reports emerged in recent days in Vietnamese state media suggesting that PetroVietnam would suspend any further investment in the development due to high rates of inflation.
“This information (on a suspension) is inaccurate,” PetroVietnam Exploration Production (PVEP) chief executive Do Van Khanh told Reuters.
“PVEP is still working on the Junin 2 project in Venezuela normally,” Khanh said, declining to give further details.
Junin 2 entered production in 2012 and PetroVietnam had previously targeted output to reach 200,000 barrels per day by 2016.
The Saigon Times had reported that PetroVietnam chief executive Phung Dinh Thuc revealed the production halt during a presentation of the company’s business plan.
It added the Vietnamese company had halted production in Venezuela due to difficult economic conditions with consumer prices in the South American country rising 56% last year.
The newspaper claimed Thuc said, due to the unfavourable economic conditions in Venezuela, no investors could either put money in for projects or contract local companies.
The project represents one of Vietnam’s biggest overseas investments, with Petrovietnam holding a 60% stake in a project planned to cost $1.8 billion to develop between 2009 and 2014.
